    The Conundrum of Queen Min’s Portrait: a denied or partial identity?

    Queen Min (1851-1895) is described in numerous texts including diaries and newspaper articles written by Western, Japanese and Korean authors who lived in Korea between the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries. However, she is without visual identity, i.e., facial identity, even though King Kojong (1864-1907) referred to the existence of a portrait. This article holds that visual and non-visual identities are complementary to a person. It argues that in the case of Queen Min, the missing visual record generates a de-personification of her identity and that this contributes to the tarnishing of her public and private role in the period prior to Japan's annexation of Korea. The paper also discusses the history of the queen's visual identity, which is missing from official history, and inquires into its significance

    Berry phase of magnons in textured ferromagnets

    We study the energy spectrum of magnons in a ferromagnet with topologically nontrivial magnetization profile. In the case of inhomogeneous magnetization corresponding to a metastable state of ferromagnet, the spin-wave equation of motion acquires a gauge potential leading to a Berry phase for the magnons propagating along a closed contour. The effect of magnetic anisotropy is crucial for the Berry phase: we show that the anisotropy suppresses its magnitude, which makes the Berry phase observable in some cases, similar to the Aharonov-Bohm effect for electrons. For example, it can be observed in the interference of spin waves propagating in mesoscopic rings. We discuss the effect of domain walls on the interference in ferromagnetic rings, and propose some experiments with a certain geometry of magnetization. We also show that the nonvanishing average topological field acts on the magnons like a uniform magnetic field on electrons. It leads to the quantization of the magnon spectrum in the topological field.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in multilayer-(Co/Pt)/AlOx/Pt structures

    We report observations of tunneling anisotropic magnetoresitance (TAMR) in vertical tunnel devices with a ferromagnetic multilayer-(Co/Pt) electrode and a non-magnetic Pt counter-electrode separated by an AlOx barrier. In stacks with the ferromagnetic electrode terminated by a Co film the TAMR magnitude saturates at 0.15% beyond which it shows only weak dependence on the magnetic field strength, bias voltage, and temperature. For ferromagnetic electrodes terminated by two monolayers of Pt we observe order(s) of magnitude enhancement of the TAMR and a strong dependence on field, temperature and bias. Discussion of experiments is based on relativistic ab initio calculations of magnetization orientation dependent densities of states of Co and Co/Pt model systems.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys.     High Kinetic Inductance Superconducting Nanowire Resonators for Circuit QED in a Magnetic Field

    We present superconducting microwave-frequency resonators based on NbTiN nanowires. The small cross section of the nanowires minimizes vortex generation, making the resonators resilient to magnetic fields. Measured intrinsic quality factors exceed 2×1052\times 10^5 in a 66 T in-plane magnetic field, and 3×1043\times 10^4 in a 350350 mT perpendicular magnetic field. Due to their high characteristic impedance, these resonators are expected to develop zero-point voltage fluctuations one order of magnitude larger than in standard coplanar waveguide resonators. These properties make the nanowire resonators well suited for circuit QED experiments needing strong coupling to quantum systems with small electric dipole moments and requiring a magnetic field, such as electrons in single and double quantum dots

    Optical precursors in transparent media

    We theoretically study the linear propagation of a stepwise pulse through a dilute dispersive medium when the frequency of the optical carrier coincides with the center of a natural or electromagnetically induced transparency window of the medium (slow-light systems). We obtain fully analytical expressions of the entirety of the step response and show that, for parameters representative of real experiments, Sommerfeld-Brillouin precursors, main field and second precursors "postcursors" can be distinctly observed, all with amplitudes comparable to that of the incident step. This behavior strongly contrasts with that of the systems generally considered up to now

    Persistence of small-scale anisotropy of magnetic turbulence as observed in the solar wind

    The anisotropy of magnetophydrodynamic turbulence is investigated by using solar wind data from the Helios 2 spacecraft. We investigate the behaviour of the complete high-order moment tensors of magnetic field increments and we compare the usual longitudinal structure functions which have both isotropic and anisotropic contributions, to the fully anisotropic contribution. Scaling exponents have been extracted by an interpolation scaling function. Unlike the usual turbulence in fluid flows, small-scale magnetic fluctuations remain anisotropic.
