Semiclassical charged black holes with a quantized massive scalar field
Semiclassical perturbations to the Reissner-Nordstrom metric caused by the
presence of a quantized massive scalar field with arbitrary curvature coupling
are found to first order in \epsilon = \hbar/M^2. The DeWitt-Schwinger
approximation is used to determine the vacuum stress-energy tensor of the
massive scalar field. When the semiclassical perturbation are taken into
account, we find extreme black holes will have a charge-to-mass ratio that
exceeds unity, as measured at infinity. The effects of the perturbations on the
black hole temperature (surface gravity) are studied in detail, with particular
emphasis on near extreme ``bare'' states that might become precisely zero
temperature ``dressed'' semiclassical black hole states. We find that for
minimally or conformally coupled scalar fields there are no zero temperature

The development of a program analysis environment for Ada
A unit level, Ada software module testing system, called Query Utility Environment for Software Testing of Ada (QUEST/Ada), is described. The project calls for the design and development of a prototype system. QUEST/Ada design began with a definition of the overall system structure and a description of component dependencies. The project team was divided into three groups to resolve the preliminary designs of the parser/scanner: the test data generator, and the test coverage analyzer. The Phase 1 report is a working document from which the system documentation will evolve. It provides history, a guide to report sections, a literature review, the definition of the system structure and high level interfaces, descriptions of the prototype scope, the three major components, and the plan for the remainder of the project. The appendices include specifications, statistics, two papers derived from the current research, a preliminary users' manual, and the proposal and work plan for Phase 2
Ancilla-based quantum simulation
We consider simulating the BCS Hamiltonian, a model of low temperature
superconductivity, on a quantum computer. In particular we consider conducting
the simulation on the qubus quantum computer, which uses a continuous variable
ancilla to generate interactions between qubits. We demonstrate an O(N^3)
improvement over previous work conducted on an NMR computer [PRL 89 057904
(2002) & PRL 97 050504 (2006)] for the nearest neighbour and completely general
cases. We then go on to show methods to minimise the number of operations
needed per time step using the qubus in three cases; a completely general case,
a case of exponentially decaying interactions and the case of fixed range
interactions. We make these results controlled on an ancilla qubit so that we
can apply the phase estimation algorithm, and hence show that when N \geq 5,
our qubus simulation requires significantly less operations that a similar

Testing asteroseismology with Gaia DR2: Hierarchical models of the Red Clump
Asteroseismology provides fundamental stellar parameters independent of
distance, but subject to systematics under calibration. Gaia DR2 has provided
parallaxes for a billion stars, which are offset by a parallax zero-point. Red
Clump (RC) stars have a narrow spread in luminosity, thus functioning as
standard candles to calibrate these systematics. This work measures how the
magnitude and spread of the RC in the Kepler field are affected by changes to
temperature and scaling relations for seismology, and changes to the parallax
zero-point for Gaia. We use a sample of 5576 RC stars classified through
asteroseismology. We apply hierarchical Bayesian latent variable models,
finding the population level properties of the RC with seismology, and use
those as priors on Gaia parallaxes to find the parallax zero-point offset. We
then find the position of the RC using published values for the zero-point. We
find a seismic temperature insensitive spread of the RC of ~0.03 mag in the
2MASS K band and a larger and slightly temperature-dependent spread of ~0.13
mag in the Gaia G band. This intrinsic dispersion in the K band provides a
distance precision of ~1% for RC stars. Using Gaia data alone, we find a mean
zero-point of -41 10 as. This offset yields RC absolute magnitudes
of -1.634 0.018 in K and 0.546 0.016 in G. Obtaining these same
values through seismology would require a global temperature shift of ~-70 K,
which is compatible with known systematics in spectroscopy.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Compact QED3 with theta term and axionic confining strings
We discuss three dimensional compact QED with a theta term due to an axionic
field. The variational gauge invariant functional is considered and it is shown
that the ground state energy is independent of theta in a leading
approximation. The mass gap of the axionic field is found to be dependent upon
theta, the mass gap of the photon field and the scalar potential. The vacuum
expectation of the Wilson loop is shown to be independent of theta in a leading
approximation, to obey the area law and to lead to confinement. We also briefly

Investigations To Characterize Multi-Junction Solar Cells In The Stratosphere Using Low-Cost Balloon And Communication Technologies
The use of current balloon, control and communication technologies to test multi-junction solar sell in the stratosphere to achieve near AMO conditions have been investigated. The design criteria for the technologies are that they be reliable, low cost and readily available. Progress is reported on a program to design, launch, fly and retrieve payloads dedicated to testing multi-junction solar cells
Size segregation and convection
The size segregation of granular materials in a vibrating container is
investigated using Molecular Dynamics. We find that the rising of larger
particles is accompanied by the existence of convection cells even in the case
of the lowest possible frequencies. The convection can, however, also be
triggered by the larger particle itself. The possibility of rising through this
mechanism strongly depends on the depth of the larger particle.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Tomographic Separation of Composite Spectra. VIII. The Physical Properties of the Massive Compact Binary in the Triple Star System HD 36486 (delta Orionis A)
Double-lined spectroscopic orbital elements have recently been found for the
central binary in the massive triple, delta Orionis A based on radial
velocities from cross-correlation techniques applied to IUE high dispersion
spectra and He I 6678 spectra obtained at Kitt Peak. The primary and secondary
velocity amplitudes were found to be 94.9 +/- 0.6 km/s and 186 +/- 9 km/s
respectively. Tomographic reconstructions of the primary and secondary stars'
spectra confirm the O9.5 II classification of the primary and indicate a B0.5
III type for the secondary. The widths of the UV cross-correlation functions
are used to estimate the projected rotational velocities, Vsin i = 157 +/- 6
km/s and 138 +/- 16 km/s for the primary and secondary, respectively implying
that both stars rotate faster than their orbital motion. We used the
spectroscopic results to make a constrained fit of the Hipparcos light curve of
this eclipsing binary, and the model fits limit the inclination to the range
between 67 and 77 degrees. The i = 67 degrees solution, which corresponds to a
near Roche-filling configuration, results in a primary mass of 11.2 solar
masses and a secondary mass of 5.6 solar masses, both of which are
substantially below the expected masses for stars of their luminosity. This
binary may have experienced a mass ratio reversal caused by Case A Roche lobe
overflow, or the system may have suffered extensive mass loss through a binary
interaction, perhaps during a common envelope phase, in which most of the
primary's mass was lost from the system rather than transferred to the

Epidemiology of antibiotic Use and Drivers of Cross-Border Procurement in a Mexican american Border Community
BACKGROUND: The U.S.-Mexico Border is an area of opportunity for improved health care access; however, gaps remain as to how and where U.S. border residents, particularly those who are underinsured, obtain care. Antibiotics are one of the most common reported drivers of cross-border healthcare access and a medication of particular concern since indiscriminate or inappropriate use is associated with antimicrobial resistance. In addition, many studies assessing preferences for Mexican pharmaceuticals and healthcare in U.S. border residents were done prior to 2010 when many prescription medications, including antibiotics, were available over the counter in Mexico.
METHODS: Data used in this study were collected during the baseline examination of an ongoing longitudinal cohort study in Starr Country, Texas, one of 14 counties on the Texas-Mexico border. Participants self-reported the name, date of use, and the source country of each antibiotic used in the past 12 months. Logistic regression was used to determine social, cultural, and clinical features associated with cross-border procurement of antibiotics.
RESULTS: Over 10% of the study cohort reported using antibiotics in the past 30 days with over 60% of all rounds used in the past 12 months sourced from Mexico. A lack of health insurance and generation score, a measure of acculturation, were the strongest predictors of cross-border procurement of antibiotics.
CONCLUSIONS: Factors previously associated with cross-border acquisition of antibiotics are still present despite changes in 2010 to prescription drug regulations in Mexico. These results may be used to inform future public health initiatives to provide culturally sensitive education about responsible antibiotic stewardship and to address barriers to U.S. healthcare and pharmaceutical access in medically underserved, impoverished U.S.-Mexico border communities
