In this paper we combine many of the standard and more recent algebraic techniques for testing isomorphism of finite groups (GpI) with combinatorial techniques that have typically b

Rank reduction of string C-group representations

    No full text
We show that a rank reduction technique for string C-group representations first used in [Adv. Math. 228 (2018), pp. 3207-3222] for the symmetric groups generalizes to arbitrary settings. The technique permits us, among other things, to prove that orthogonal groups defined on d-dimensional modules over fields of even order greater than 2 possess string C-group representations of all ranks 3 ≤ n ≤ d. The broad applicability of the rank reduction technique provides fresh impetus to construct, for suitable families of groups, string C-groups of highest possible rank. It also suggests that the alternating group Alt(11)-the only known group having "rank gaps"-is perhaps more unusual than previously thought.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Orthogonal Groups in Characteristic 2 Acting on Polytopes of High Rank

We show that for all integers m⩾ 2 ,and all integers k⩾ 2 ,the orthogonal groups O±(2m,F2k) act on abstract regular polytopes of rank 2m, and the symplectic groups Sp(2m,F2k) act on abstract regular polytopes of rank 2 m+ 1.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Data access: Toward unrestricted use of public genomic data

    No full text
Despite some notable progress in data sharing policies and practices, restrictions are still often placed on the open and unconditional use of various genomic data after they have received official approval for release to the public domain or to public databases. These restrictions, which often conflict with the terms and conditions of the funding bodies who supported the release of those data for the benefit of the scientific community and society, are perpetuated by the lack of clear guiding rules for data usage. Existing guidelines for data released to the public domain recognize, but fail to resolve tensions between, both the importance of free and unconditional usage of these data, as well as the “right” of the data producers to the first publication. This self-contradiction has resulted in a loophole that allows different interpretation and a continuous debate between data producers and data users on the utilization of public data. We argue that the publicly available data should be treated as open data, a shared resource with unrestricted usage for analysis, interpretation, and publication.Fil: Amann, Rudolf I..
