Radicals, Metals and Magnetism
The interaction between unpaired electrons governs many physical properties of materials. Although in a fundamental sense the interaction is simple, a full understanding of the interaction in molecular systems is complicated by the presence of other bonding and non-bonding electrons. The resulting many body problem is very challenging. Nevertheless, much qualitative understanding can be obtained from applying simple molecular orbital theory and considering only the partly filled orbitals. The resulting model can be used to describe existing diradical and metal-radical systems and also has predicative value in the search for molecular magnets and design of nanoscale devices

Characteristics of successful interventions to reduce turnover and increase retention of early career nurses: a systematic review
Background
nurse shortages have been identified as central to workforce issues in healthcare systems globally and although interventions to increase the nursing workforce have been implemented, nurses leaving their roles, particularly in the first year after qualification, present a significant barrier to building the nurse workforce.
Objective
to evaluate the characteristics of successful interventions to promote retention and reduce turnover of early career nurses.

Data sources
Online databases including Academic Search Complete, Medline, Health Policy reference Centre, EMBASE, Psychinfo, CINAHL and the Cochran Library were searched to identify relevant publications in English published between 2001 and April 2018. Studies included evaluated an intervention to increase retention or reduce turnover and used turnover or retention figures as a measure.
Review methods
The review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies were quality-assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools for Quasi Experimental and Randomised Controlled Trials. Retention/turnover data were used to guide the comparison between studies and appropriate measures of central tendency and dispersion were calculated and presented, based on the normality of the data.
Results
A total of 11, 656 papers were identified, of which 53 were eligible studies. A wide variety of interventions and components within those interventions were identified to improve nurse retention. Promising interventions appear to be either internship/residency programmes or orientation/transition to practice programmes, lasting between 27-52 weeks, with a teaching and preceptor and mentor component.
Conclusions
Methodological issues impacted on the extent to which conclusions could be drawn, even though a large number of studies were identified. Future research should focus on standardising the reporting of interventions and outcome measures used to evaluate these interventions and carrying out further research with rigorous methodology. Clinical practice areas are recommended to assess their current interventions against the identified criteria to guide development of their effectiveness. Evaluations of cost-effectiveness are considered an important next step to maximise return on investment
A Comparison of Risk Exposure in Aquaculture and Agricultural Businesses
Agriculture and aquaculture have common features associated with their biological nature affecting risk exposure of the businesses. The aim of this paper is to compare risk exposure in salmon farming and agricultural enterprises in Norway by using an implicit error component model to examine the risk structure of yields, prices and economic returns at the farm level. Results indicate a higher farm-level year-to-year variability in yields, prices and economic returns in salmon farming than in agricultural enterprises. The variability in livestock enterprises was generally lower than for crop enterprises. Return on assets was highest in salmon farming with an average annual return of 9.2%. All of the agricultural farm types exhibited a negative average return on assets on average. Stochastic dominance tests of the distribution of economic returns from aquaculture and agricultural farm types showed salmon farming to be the most risk efficient alternative and salmon farming was most attractive from an investor’s perspective.Risk analysis, variability, Norway, Risk and Uncertainty,

Nighttime observations of thunderstorm electrical activity from a high altitude airplane
Nocturnal thunderstorms were observed from above and features of cloud structure and lightning which are not generally visible from the ground are discussed. Most, lightning activity seems to be associated with clouds with strong convective cauliflower tops. In both of the storms lightning channels were visible in the clear air above the cloud. It is shown that substances produced by thunderstorm electrical discharges can be introduced directly into the stratosphere. The cause and nature of the discharges above the cloud are not clear. They may be produced by accumulations of space charge in the clear air above the cloud. The discharges may arise solely because of the intense electric fields produced by charges within the cloud. In the latter case the ions introduced by these discharges will increase the electrical conductivity of the air above the cloud and increase the conduction current that flows from the cloud to the electrosphere. More quantitative data at higher resolution may show significant spectral differences between cloud to ground and intracloud strokes. It is shown that electric field change data taken with an electric field change meter mounted in an airplane provide data on lightning discharges from above that are quite similar to those obtained from the ground in the past. The optical signals from dart leaders, from return strokes, and from continuing currents are recognizable, can be used to provide information on the fine structure of lightning, and can be used to distinguish between cloud to ground and intracloud flashes
Hierarchical formation of bulgeless galaxies II: Redistribution of angular momentum via galactic fountains
Within a fully cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, we form a galaxy which
rotates at 140 km/s, and is characterised by two loose spiral arms and a bar,
indicative of a Hubble Type SBc/d galaxy. We show that our simulated galaxy has
no classical bulge, with a pure disc profile at z=1, well after the major
merging activity has ended. A long-lived bar subsequently forms, resulting in
the formation of a secularly-formed "pseudo" bulge, with the final
bulge-to-total light ratio B/T=0.21. We show that the majority of gas which
loses angular momentum and falls to the central region of the galaxy during the
merging epoch is blown back into the hot halo, with much of it returning later
to form stars in the disc. We propose that this mechanism of redistribution of
angular momentum via a galactic fountain, when coupled with the results from
our previous study which showed why gas outflows are biased to have low angular
momentum, can solve the angular momentum/bulgeless disc problem of the cold

Correlated emission and spin-down variability in radio pulsars
The recent revelation that there are correlated period derivative and pulse
shape changes in pulsars has dramatically changed our understanding of timing
noise as well as the relationship between the radio emission and the properties
of the magnetosphere as a whole. Using Gaussian processes we are able to model
timing and emission variability using a regression technique that imposes no
functional form on the data. We revisit the pulsars first studied by Lyne et
al. (2010). We not only confirm the emission and rotational transitions
revealed therein, but reveal further transitions and periodicities in 8 years
of extended monitoring. We also show that in many of these objects the pulse
profile transitions between two well-defined shapes, coincident with changes to
the period derivative. With a view to the SKA and other telescopes capable of
higher cadence we also study the detection limitations of period derivative
