    Examination of the FEAR Effect with Child Social and General Anxiety

    The current study extends the work of Barrett, Rapee, Dadds, and Ryan (1996) by attempting to further parse apart the FEAR effect with a continuous approach that examines degree differences within a response category, as well as examining both social and general anxiety. A community sample was obtained that consisted of 86 youngsters grades four through eight. There were 45 girls and 41 boys and the age range was from nine years old to fourteen years old. Youngsters were administered measures of social anxiety and general anxiety and a vignette measure developed by Barrett, Rapee, Dadds, and Fox (1996) that assesses children's responses to potentially anxiety provoking situations. Children's responses were solicited before and after discussion with one of their parents to examine potential parental influences. A new coding procedure was developed to be more sensitive to changes that may occur following the family discussion. In addition, it was hypothesized that children's social and general anxiety scores would predict response changes for social and general situations, respectively. Although there were no significant findings for these hypotheses, the current study was able to extend the current literature on the FEAR effect by examining social anxiety, using a community sample, and attempting to develop a more sensitive approach to examining the FEAR effect

    D-Brane Chemistry

    We study several different kinds of bound states built from D-branes and orientifolds. These states are to atoms what branonium - the bound state of a brane and its anti-brane - is to positronium, inasmuch as they typically involve a light brane bound to a much heavier object with conserved charges which forbid the system's decay. We find the fully relativistic motion of a probe Dp'-brane in the presence of source Dp-branes is integrable by quadratures. Keplerian conic sections are obtained for special choices for p and p' and the systems are shown to be equivalent to nonrelativistic systems. Their quantum behaviour is also equivalent to the corresponding non-relativistic limit. In particular the p=6, p'=0 case is equivalent to a non-relativistic dyon in a magnetic monopole background, with the trajectories in the surface of a cone. We also show that the motion of the probe branes about D6-branes in IIA theory is equivalent to the motion of the corresponding probes in the uplift to M-theory in 11 dimensions, for which there are no D6-branes but their fields are replaced by a particular Taub-NUT geometry. We further discuss the interactions of D-branes and orientifold planes having the same dimension. this system behaves at large distances as a brane-brane system but at shorter distances it does not have the tachyon instability.Comment: ref. added and typos correcte

    Learners’ errors in secondary algebra: insights from tracking a cohort from Grade 9 to Grade 11 on a diagnostic algebra test

    It is well known that learner performance in mathematics in South Africa is poor. However, less is known about what learners actually do and the extent to which this changes as they move through secondary school mathematics. In this study a cohort of 250 learners was tracked from Grade 9 to Grade 11 to investigate changes in their performance on a diagnostic algebra test drawn from the well-known Concepts in Secondary Maths and Science (CSMS) tests. Although the CSMS tests were initially developed for Year 8 and Year 9 learners in the UK, a Rasch analysis on the Grade 11 results showed that the test performed adequately for older learners in SA. Error analysis revealed that learners make a wide variety of errors even on simple algebra items. Typical errors include conjoining, difficulties with negatives and brackets and a tendency to evaluate expressions rather than leaving them in the required open form. There is substantial evidence of curriculum impact in learners’ responses such as the inappropriate application of the addition law of exponents and the distributive law. Although such errors dissipate in the higher grades, this happens later than expected. While many learner responses do not appear to be sensible initially, interview data reveals that there is frequently an underlying logic related to mathematics that has been previously learned

    What do we know about the health and healthcare of people with intellectual disabilities from minority ethnic groups in the United Kingdom?:A systematic review

    Background. People with from minority ethnic communities face inequalities in health and healthcare. This systematic review considers the question of what we know about the health and healthcare of children and adults with intellectual disabilities from ethnic minority communities in the UK. Method. Studies published from 1990 to 2018 were identified via electronic literature databases, email requests, and cross-citations. Studies were reviewed narratively in relation to identified themes. Results. 23 studies were identified, most commonly focusing on South Asian communities. Very little information was identified on physical health or physical healthcare, with the identified evidence tending to focus on mental health care, access to specialist intellectual disability services, and inpatient services. Conclusion. Little is known about the health status of people with intellectual disabilities from minority ethnic groups in the UK. It is clear that they may experience barriers to accessing specialist intellectual disability services and other forms of healthcare

    "Waste the Waist": The development of an intervention to promote changes in diet and physical activity for people with high cardiovascular risk.

To identify an evidence-based intervention to promote changes in diet and physical activity and adapt it for a UK primary care setting for people with high cardiovascular risk. Design. A three-stage mixed-methods design was used to facilitate a strategic approach to programme selection and adaptation. Method. Stage 1: Criteria for scientific quality and local appropriateness were developed for the selection/adaptation of an intervention to promote lifestyle change in people of high cardiovascular risk through (1) patient interviews, (2) a literature search to extract evidence-based criteria for behavioural interventions, and (3) stakeholder consultation. Stage 2: Potential interventions for adaptation were identified and ranked according to their performance against the criteria developed in Stage 1. Stage 3: Intervention mapping (IM) techniques were used to (1) specify the behavioural objectives that participants would need to reach in order to attain programme outcomes, and (2) adapt the selected intervention to ensure that evidence-based strategies to target all identified behavioural objectives were included. Results. Four of 23 potential interventions identified met the 11 essential criteria agreed by a multi-disciplinary stakeholder committee. Of these, the Greater Green Triangle programme (Laatikainen et al., 2007) was ranked highest and selected for adaptation. The IM process identified 13 additional behaviour change strategies that were used to adapt the intervention for the local context. Conclusions. IM provided a useful set of techniques for the systematic adaptation of an existing lifestyle intervention to a new population and context, and facilitated transparent working processes for a multi-disciplinary team.Department of Healt
