    Keck Imaging of the Globular Cluster Systems in the Early--type Galaxies NGC 1052 and NGC 7332

    The presence of two globular cluster subpopulations in early-type galaxies is now the norm rather than the exception. Here we present two more examples for which the host galaxy appears to have undergone a recent merger. Using multi-colour Keck imaging of NGC 1052 and NGC 7332 we find evidence for a bimodal globular cluster colour distribution in both galaxies, with roughly equal numbers of blue and red globular clusters. The blue ones have similar colours to those in the Milky Way halo and are thus probably very old and metal-poor. If the red GC subpopulations are at least solar metallicity, then stellar population models indicate young ages. We discuss the origin of globular clusters within the framework of formation models. We conclude that recent merger events in these two galaxies have had little effect on their overall GC systems. We also derive globular cluster density profiles, global specific frequencies and in the case of NGC 1052, radial colour gradients and azimuthal distribution.     Analysis and Synthesis of the Dynamic Response of Retinal Neurons

    theory of linear systems analysis is developed in a form directly applicable to the treatment of the Limulus retina. The dynamics of the retina may conveniently be characterized by means of a spatiotemporal transfer function, which summarizes the response of the system to moving sinusoidal gratings ( analysis ). The response of the retina to an arbitrary stimulus may then be calculated by addition of the response to suitably weighted sinusoidal stimuli ( synthesis ). Responses were obtained from the in-situ retina by means of extracellular recording of impulse activity in single optic nerve fibers. Test ommatidia were chosen in the interior of the retina, to avoid asymmetries introduced by the edge of the retina. Stimuli which varied in both space and time were produced under computer control on the screen of a display oscilloscope, and were conveyed to the Limulus eye by means of a fiber-optic taper. Transfer functions were measured using counterphase modulation of cosine gratings according to a sum-of-sinusoids temporal signal, a procedure equivalent to the use of moving gratings, for ommatidia with symmetrical receptive fields. By means of these transfer functions, the responses of the Limulus eye to visual stimuli moving at various velocities were predicted in a parameter-free Fourier synthesis calculation. There was good agreement between these predictions and the measured responses to these stimuli. A quantitative model for the dynamic, integrative action of the Limulus retina is developed, based on the original formulation for the steady state given by the Hartline- Ratliff equations. The model comprises an excitatory generator potential, and dynamic processes of self and lateral inhibition. An explicit expression for the spatiotemporal transfer function is obtained in terms of transfer functions for the generator potential, self-inhibitory, and lateral-inhibitory transductions, and spatial transforms of the lateral inhibitory kernel and the point-spread characteristic of the experimental and physiological optics. Explicit functional forms for these component transductions are adopted. The parameters which occur in these expressions serve to incorporate information about the subcellular physiology of retinal neurons into the quantitative description of the function of the retina as a whole. Procedures are described for the estimation of these parameters from empirical transfer function data. Transfer functions calculated from the model on the basis of parameters obtained with these procedures show good agreement with the corresponding empirical transfer functions. The parameter values obtained in this way are, in general, quite consistent with the results of many more direct (and frequently more invasive) measurements reported in the literature. In particular, the inhibitory kernel, as determined from our transfer function measurements, shows a small crater in the vicinity of the test-ommatidium. The dynamical model can be used to describe the response of the retina in the vicinity of its boundary, as well as in the interior. An analysis, based on the Wiener-Hopf technique, is given for the response of peripheral retinal neurons. The predictions derived from this theory were compared with experiment through the use of illumination patterns in which one half of the retina was kept in darkness, while the remaining half was presented with a moving stimulus. This procedure permitted the calibration of model transfer functions by means of methods appropriate only for interior ommatidia, while simulating the neural environment at the edge of a homogeneous retina. Significant differences between the responses to stimuli which moved toward and away from the simulated edge were observed experimentally, in good agreement with the predictions of the theory. Similar behavior was also observed at the actual anatomical boundary of the eye

    PET relative metabolism was correlated with quantitative EEG in 9 schizophrenic patients. The PET metabolic regions of interest were the frontal lobes, thalamus and basal ganglia, and right and left temporal lobes. Significant positive correlations were seen for the frontal lobes and delta EEG power, and alpha power with subcortical metabolism. The physiologic plausibility of those correlations is discussed with reference to the possible effect of neuroleptic medication

    Tolerability, safety, and efficacy of adjunctive brivaracetam for focal seizures in older patients: A pooled analysis from three phase III studies

    Introduction: This analysis was conducted to assess the tolerability, safety, and efficacy of brivaracetam (BRV) for adjunctive treatment of focal (partial-onset) seizures in patients aged ≥65 years. Methods: Safety/tolerability and efficacy data for patients aged ≥65 years were pooled from three randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, fixed-dose Phase III studies (NCT00490035, NCT00464269, and NCT01261325). Data were pooled by treatment group: placebo or the proposed therapeutic dose range of 50–200 mg/day: BRV 50, 100, 200 mg/day. Results: Thirty-two patients aged ≥65 years were randomized to placebo or BRV 50–200 mg/day. Of these, 30 patients (93.8%) completed their respective study. In the safety population (n = 32), 87.5% placebo- vs 73.3% BRV-treated patients reported treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) during the treatment period; most commonly, headache (25.0% vs 12.5%), paresthesia (0% vs 12.5%), and somnolence (50.0% vs 12.5%) for placebo- vs BRV-treated patients, respectively. During the treatment period, drug-related TEAEs were reported by 62.5% of placebo- vs 53.3% of BRV-treated patients, and serious TEAEs (SAEs) were reported by 0% of placebo- and 4.2% of BRV-treated patients; there were no drug-related SAEs and no deaths. Three SAEs (placebo 1/8; BRV 2/24) and two deaths (placebo 1/8; BRV 1/24) occurred in the post-treatment period. In the efficacy population (n = 31), median percent reduction from baseline in focal seizure frequency/28 days was 14.0% for placebo vs 25.5%, 49.6%, and 74.9% for BRV 50, 100, and 200 mg/day, respectively. The ≥50% responder rate was 14.3% for placebo vs 25.0%, 50.0%, and 66.7% for BRV 50, 100, and 200 mg/day, respectively. Conclusions: Safety/tolerability and efficacy findings in this small subgroup of older patients treated with adjunctive BRV are consistent with those observed in the much larger overall pooled population. BRV may be a suitable adjunctive treatment for older patients with uncontrolled focal seizures. Further larger studies in this population are warranted

    Keck Spectroscopy of Two Young Globular Clusters in the Merger Remnant NGC 3921

    Low-resolution UV-to-visual spectra of two candidate globular clusters in the merger remnant NGC 3921 are presented. These two clusters of apparent magnitude V = 22.2 (Mv = -12.5) lie at projected distances of ~5 kpc from the center and move with halo-type radial velocities relative to the local galaxy background. Their spectra show strong Balmer absorption lines indicative of main-sequence turnoffs dominated by A-type stars. Comparisons with model-cluster spectra computed by Bruzual & Charlot and others yield cluster ages in the range of 200-530 Myr, and metallicities about solar to within a factor of three. Given their small half-light radii (Reff < 5 pc) and ages corresponding to ~100 core- crossing times, these clusters are gravitationally bound and, hence, indeed young globulars. Assuming that they had Chabrier-type initial mass functions, their estimated current masses are 2.3(+-0.1)x10^6 Msun and 1.5(+-0.1)x10^6 Msun, respectively, or roughly half the mass of omegaCen. Since NGC 3921 itself shows many signs of being a 0.7(+-0.3) Gyr old protoelliptical, these two young globulars of roughly solar metallicity and their many counterparts observed with the Hubble Space Telescope provide supporting evidence that, in the process of forming elliptical-like remnants, major mergers of gas-rich disks can also increase the number of metal-rich globular clusters.     On ‘Organized Crime’ in the illicit antiquities trade: moving beyond the definitional debate

    The extent to which ‘organized crime’ is involved in illicit antiquities trafficking is unknown and frequently debated. This paper explores the significance and scale of the illicit antiquities trade as a unique transnational criminal phenomenon that is often said to be perpetrated by and exhibit traits of so-called ‘organized crime.’ The definitional debate behind the term ‘organized crime’ is considered as a potential problem impeding our understanding of its existence or extent in illicit antiquities trafficking, and a basic progression-based model is then suggested as a new tool to move beyond the definitional debate for future research that may help to elucidate the actors, processes and criminal dynamics taking place within the illicit antiquities trade from source to market. The paper concludes that researchers should focus not on the question of whether organized criminals- particularly in a traditionally conceived, mafia-type stereotypical sense- are involved in the illicit antiquities trade, but instead on the structure and progression of antiquities trafficking itself that embody both organized and criminal dynamics

    Surprisingly Little Population Genetic Structure In A Fungus-Associated Beetle Despite Its Exploitation Of Multiple Hosts

    In heterogeneous environments, landscape features directly affect the structure of genetic variation among populations by functioning as barriers to gene flow. Resource-associated population genetic structure, in which populations that use different resources (e.g., host plants) are genetically distinct, is a well-studied example of how environmental heterogeneity structures populations. However, the pattern that emerges in a given landscape should depend on its particular combination of resources. If resources constitute barriers to gene flow, population differentiation should be lowest in homogeneous landscapes, and highest where resources exist in equal proportions. In this study, we tested whether host community diversity affects population genetic structure in a beetle (Bolitotherus cornutus) that exploits three sympatric host fungi. We collected B.cornutus from plots containing the three host fungi in different proportions and quantified population genetic structure in each plot using a panel of microsatellite loci. We found no relationship between host community diversity and population differentiation in this species; however, we also found no evidence of resource-associated differentiation, suggesting that host fungi are not substantial barriers to gene flow. Moreover, we detected no genetic differentiation among B.cornutus populations separated by several kilometers, even though a previous study demonstrated moderate genetic structure on the scale of a few hundred meters. Although we found no effect of community diversity on population genetic structure in this study, the role of host communities in the structuring of genetic variation in heterogeneous landscapes should be further explored in a species that exhibits resource-associated population genetic structure
