The Contagion: Sin and the Human Person From the Cappadocian Perspective

This thesis examines the nature of sin and its effects on human nature in the thought of Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa. In order to achieve this, it opens with an exploration of the original created state of human nature and the telos or purpose God established for it, then moves to a survey of the origin and ontology of evil, followed by a discussion of humanity in Paradise, and concludes with the state of human nature after the transgression. The human being is found to be a creature of composite nature, uniting soul and matter. It possesses the distinct characteristic of the image of God, and its goal is theosis or deification. Evil is considered to be a deprivation of goodness; therefore, it lacks actual ontology. It was introduced into the universe by Lucifer, and into the human realm through Adam. The first human pair dwelt in a spiritualized Paradise, shrouded by goodness and blessed with immortality. Empowered by the endowed gift of free will, humanity chose to tum against goodness, thus invoking evil into the human realm. As a result of the transgression, human nature was clothed in coats of skin, which encompass death and moral incapacity. The effects of sin hinder divine understanding, as the image of God in humanity has been defaced. Humanity is not without hope, however, and its telos has not been terminated. Through a conjunction of the inherent grace of the divine image and human effort, the image of God can be renewed and preserved

Towards a Franciscan model of clinical pastoral supervision

Towards a Franciscan model of Clinical pastoral supervision is a study of interaction between two movements: Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and Franciscan Spirituality. Francis and Clare were the primary founders of the Franciscan movement and Franciscan spirituality arose from their reflections on their unique response of following Christ. From the early Franciscan sources, essential elements are retrieved. Compassion is illustrated as a key quality of this model through textual analysis of four stories of Francis and his early followers. Clinical Pastoral Education is a result of the contributions of three founders: Keller, Cabot and Boisen. Clinical pastoral supervision (CPS) is a distinguishing concept of CPE. Various models of CPS are categorised according to three paradigms of western society: classical, modern and postmodern. The study concludes by framing a Franciscan model of clinical pastoral supervision. Contemplation and compassion are the two Franciscan characteristics which give this model a unique Franciscan dimension.New TestamentM.Th

No one told me I needed mathematics for physics

The presentation of preliminary results from a series of video resources we developed to supplement a low-stakes online mathematics assessment. Preparatory Physics(PH1001)is the first of three physics subjects for our Sport and Exercise Science students, and a compulsory subject in our pre-degree diploma. A key learning objective for this algebra-based subject addresses how students compose mathematical solutions for various physics problems Our aims were to: 1) Develop and implement an online learning and non-invigilated assessment module to assist students with composing mathematical solutions. 2) Assess whether the online learning and non-invigilated assessment module improves student's confidence in their ability to compose mathematical solutions while reducing their mathematics anxiety. A large number of students within our Preparatory Physics subject exhibit an inability to effectively compose mathematical solutions. To assist students with improving this skill a revised assessment restructure was created to include low stakes non-invigilated quizzes to allow independent, frequent, and timely, examination of a mathematical skill. Previously students have had little specific practice, assessment, or feedback on their ability to compose mathematical solutions – traditionally that's for another subject. We changed that premise by presenting them with mathematically-based online learning and assessment tasks immediately before those skills were necessary in the following lectures. The online aspect consisted of a video detailing how to use a particular mathematical procedure while applying it to a discipline specific problem. The accompanying assessment was a multiple choice quiz focussed on assessing the targeted mathematical skill presented. We used this to identify deficiencies during the course of the semester giving staff and students the opportunity to address areas of concern prior to the semester's conclusion. Pre- and post-surveys were given to harvest information on perceptions of their own ability to use mathematics and on the need for mathematics in physics
