Analysis of a reconfigurable UWB log-periodic antenna using the Method of Moments

    Get PDF
In this article we discuss in detail the numerical implementation and computer simulations based on the Method of Moments (MoM) of the reconfigurable, ultra wideband (UWB) log-periodic antenna. The manufacturing and testing procedures are also addressed. The antenna was built utilizing low cost and/or recyclable materials and covers frequencies from 74 MHz to 2 GHz, through the discrete adjustment of its elements. The gain in a given frequency band of operation can also be changed by the reconfiguration of its elements. This antenna can be widely used in developing countries where scarce resources limit both the use of antennas in educational laboratory experiments and their use in industrial applications

Objective: To investigate the influence of parental depression and substance use in the oral health care of children with disabilities. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 151 children with disabilities and their parents/caregivers. To detect the presence of depression and alcohol or tobacco use, the parents/caregivers answered three questionnaires: two versions of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ), AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), and the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). Then, the children with disabilities underwent oral examination to evaluate biofilm control, gingival condition and the dental carie index (decayed, missing, and filled teeth - dmft ̸ DMFT). Results: There was a statistically significant association between tobacco use and dental caries in deciduous teeth (p=0.046). The children of smokers had six times greater need for dental treatment than that of non-smokers (OR= 6.36; CI= 1.3–30.5). There was no statistically significant association between the oral health of the children with disabilities and parental alcohol consumption and depression (p>0.05). Children with medical condition had a higher need for dental treatment than children with intellectual disability (p=0.003). Conclusion: Parental smoking habits increase dental caries in the deciduous teeth of children with disabilities, but parental depression and alcohol use do not influence the oral health of children with disabilities. Children with medical condition have more treatment needs than children with intellectual disability

A análise comparativa da ação desses dois AH sobre as espécies representantes de plantas monocotiledôneas (milho) e dicotiledôneas (café) apontam para a ativação da H+-ATPase de plasmalema como possível marcador metabólico de bioatividade dos ácidos húmicosThe bioactivity of humic acids (HA) isolated from sludge of the station of sewer treatment (HAL) and from vermicompost (HAV) was evaluated through the action of those substances on primary transport of protons of the plasma membrane of coffee and corn root cells and its relationship with the development of those species. A stimulation in the superficial area of roots was observed for both species cultivated with both humic acids, exhibiting an optimum concentration, about 40 mg L-1 of HA. In this condition the treatment with HAL and HAV stimulated the plasma membrane H+-ATPase of corn and coffee roots. HAL were more effective to promote those effects than HAV. The modification of the chromatographic profile of the HA in solution before and after the cultivation of the seedlings revealed that the interaction plant-HA promoted a rearrangement of the average molecular weight of those substances suggesting a dynamic mobilization of bioactive subunits of the HA by plant exudates. The structural analysis of the HA has detected the presence of auxin groups. A comparative analysis of the action of those HA on the monocotyledonous (corn) and dicotyledonous (coffee) plants indicates to the activation of plasmallema H+-ATPase as a possible metabolic marker for bioactivity of humic acids

Abstract

Background

Despite evidence that health and disease occur in social contexts, the vast majority of studies addressing dental pain exclusively assessed information gathered at individual level.

Objectives

To assess the association between dental pain and contextual and individual characteristics in Brazilian adolescents. In addition, we aimed to test whether contextual Human Development Index is independently associated with dental pain after adjusting for individual level variables of socio-demographics and dental characteristics.

Methods

The study used data from an oral health survey carried out in São Paulo, Brazil, which included dental pain, dental exams, individual socioeconomic and demographic conditions, and Human Development Index at area level of 4,249 12-year-old and 1,566 15-year-old schoolchildren. The Poisson multilevel analysis was performed.

Results

Dental pain was found among 25.6% (95%CI = 24.5-26.7) of the adolescents and was 33% less prevalent among those living in more developed areas of the city than among those living in less developed areas. Girls, blacks, those whose parents earn low income and have low schooling, those studying at public schools, and those with dental treatment needs presented higher dental-pain prevalence than their counterparts. Area HDI remained associated with dental pain after adjusting for individual level variables of socio demographic and dental characteristics.

Conclusions

Girls, students whose parents have low schooling, those with low <it>per capita </it>income, those classified as having black skin color and those with dental treatment needs had higher dental pain prevalence than their counterparts. Students from areas with low Human Development Index had higher prevalence of dental pain than those from the more developed areas regardless of individual characteristics.</p
