A spectroscopically confirmed z=1.327 galaxy-scale deflector magnifying a z~8 Lyman-Break galaxy in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies survey
We present a detailed analysis of an individual case of gravitational lensing
of a Lyman-Break galaxy (LBG) in a blank field, identified in Hubble
Space Telescope imaging obtained as part of the Brightest of Reionizing
Galaxies survey. To investigate the close proximity of the bright
() -dropout to a small group of foreground galaxies, we
obtained deep spectroscopy of the dropout and two foreground galaxies using
VLT/X-Shooter. We detect H-, H-, [OIII] and [OII] emission in
the brightest two foreground galaxies (unresolved at the natural seeing of
arcsec), placing the pair at . We can rule out emission lines
contributing all of the observed broadband flux in band at
, allowing us to exclude the candidate as a low redshift
interloper with broadband photometry dominated by strong emission lines. The
foreground galaxy pair lies at the peak of the luminosity, redshift and
separation distributions for deflectors of strongly lensed objects,
and we make a marginal detection of a demagnified secondary image in the
deepest () filter. We show that the configuration can be accurately
modelled by a singular isothermal ellipsoidal deflector and a S\'{e}rsic source
magnified by a factor of . The reconstructed source in the
best-fitting model is consistent with luminosities and morphologies of
LBGs in the literature. The lens model yields a group mass of
and a stellar mass-to-light ratio for the
brightest deflector galaxy of within its effective radius. The foreground galaxies'
redshifts would make this one of the few strong lensing deflectors discovered

Nonequilibrium dynamics of vortex arrest in a finite-temperature Bose-Einstein condensate
We perform finite-temperature dynamical simulations of the arrest of a
rotating Bose-Einstein condensate by a fixed trap anisotropy, using a
Hamiltonian classical-field method. We consider a quasi-two-dimensional
condensate containing a single vortex in equilibrium with a rotating thermal
cloud. Introducing an elliptical deformation of the trapping potential leads to
the loss of angular momentum from the system. We identify the condensate and
the complementary thermal component of the nonequilibrium field, and compare
the evolution of their angular momenta and angular velocities. By varying the
trap anisotropy we alter the relative efficiencies of the vortex-cloud and
cloud-trap coupling. For strong trap anisotropies the angular momentum of the
thermal cloud may be entirely depleted before the vortex begins to decay. For
weak trap anisotropies, the thermal cloud exhibits a long-lived steady state in

Determination of the s-wave Scattering Length of Chromium
We have measured the deca-triplet s-wave scattering length of the bosonic
chromium isotopes Cr and Cr. From the time constants for
cross-dimensional thermalization in atomic samples we have determined the
magnitudes and ,
where . By measuring the rethermalization rate of Cr over a
wide temperature range and comparing the temperature dependence with the
effective-range theory and single-channel calculations, we have obtained strong
evidence that the sign of is positive. Rescaling our Cr
model potential to Cr strongly suggests that is positive,

The Origins of Phase Transitions in Small Systems
The identification and classification of phases in small systems, e.g.
nuclei, social and financial networks, clusters, and biological systems, where
the traditional definitions of phase transitions are not applicable, is
important to obtain a deeper understanding of the phenomena observed in such
systems. Within a simple statistical model we investigate the validity and
applicability of different classification schemes for phase transtions in small
systems. We show that the whole complex temperature plane contains necessary

Deceptive signals of phase transitions in small magnetic clusters
We present an analysis of the thermodynamic properties of small transition
metal clusters and show how the commonly used indicators of phase transitions
like peaks in the specific heat or magnetic susceptibility can lead to
deceptive interpretations of the underlying physics. The analysis of the
distribution of zeros of the canonical partition function in the whole complex
temperature plane reveals the nature of the transition. We show that signals in
the magnetic susceptibility at positive temperatures have their origin at zeros

The bright-end galaxy candidates at z ~ 9 from 79 independent HST fields
We present a full data analysis of the pure-parallel Hubble Space Telescope
(HST) imaging observations in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies Survey
(BoRG[z9]) in Cycle 22. The medium-deep exposures with five HST/WFC3IR+UVIS
filter bands from 79 independent sightlines (~370 arcmin^2) provide the least
biased determination of number density for z>9 bright galaxies against cosmic
variance. After a strict two-step selection for candidate galaxies, including
dropout color and photometric redshift analyses, and revision of previous BoRG
candidates, we identify one source at z~10 and two sources at z~9. The z~10
candidate shows evidence of line-of-sight lens magnification (mu~1.5), yet it
appears surprisingly luminous (MUV ~ -22.6\pm0.3 mag), making it one of the
brightest candidates at z > 8 known (~ 0.3 mag brighter than the z = 8.68
galaxy EGSY8p7, spectroscopically confirmed by Zitrin and collaborators). For z
~ 9 candidates, we include previous data points at fainter magnitudes and find
that the data are well fitted by a Schechter luminosity function with alpha ~
-2.1, MUV ~ -21.5 mag, and log phi ~ -4.5 Mpc^-3mag^-1, for the first time
without fixing any parameters. The inferred cosmic star formation rate density

Strategic sustainable development in the UK construction industry, through the Framework of Strategic Sustainable Development, using Building Information Modelling
The UK Government has set out ambitious plans for all new domestic and commercial buildings to be zero carbon rated by 2016 and 2020 respectively. These are some of the most progressive environmental targets for the built environment in the western world. There are also sustainability principles (SP) that need to be addressed by the UK construction industry, particularly negative impacts such as waste and pollution. Currently, 100 million tonnes of construction waste, including 13 million tonnes of unused materials, is generated each year, with only 20% currently capable of being recycled. The majority of this waste ends up in landfill, contributing to further pollution of the biosphere. The literature suggests that these negative impacts result from a variety of causes, including ineffective leadership, ingrained cultures, outdated technologies and poor logistics.
There are a number of innovative projects within the UK, particularly at a local level, that pose the question as to whether bottom up approaches may be more successful than top down policies, as set by national and local government. This paper presents a case study demonstrating the former approach within the construction industry. Research and consultancy has been undertaken collaboratively between industry, academia and professional practice in the production of 15 individually designed sustainable dwellings in the North East of England. This project has employed Building Information Modelling (BIM) as a new collaborative working platform, aligned to the Modern Method of Construction (MMC). By situating this inquiry within an authentic case study it has highlighted currently ineffective strategies, policies and leadership which have prevented full exploitation of the potential of BIM and MMC towards sustainable production. This inquiry supports the integration of the Framework of Sustainable Strategic Development (FSSD) into construction procurement, as a method for implementing bottom up leadership in a value driven project
Alternative mechanism for bacteriophage adsorption to the motile bacterium Caulobacter crescentus
2D and 3D cryo-electron microscopy, together with adsorption kinetics assays of Ï•Cb13 and Ï•CbK phage-infected Caulobacter crescentus, provides insight into the mechanisms of infection. Ï•Cb13 and Ï•CbK actively interact with the flagellum and subsequently attach to receptors on the cell pole. We present evidence that the first interaction of the phage with the bacterial flagellum takes place through a filament on the phage head. This contact with the flagellum facilitates concentration of phage particles around the receptor (i.e., the pilus portals) on the bacterial cell surface, thereby increasing the likelihood of infection. Phage head filaments have not been well characterized and their function is described here. Phage head filaments may systematically underlie the initial interactions of phages with their hosts in other systems and possibly represent a widespread mechanism of efficient phage propagation
Bright galaxies at Hubble's redshift detection frontier: Preliminary results and design from the redshift z~9-10 BoRG pure-parallel HST survey
We present the first results and design from the redshift z~9-10 Brightest of
the Reionizing Galaxies {\it Hubble Space Telescope} survey BoRG[z9-10], aimed
at searching for intrinsically luminous unlensed galaxies during the first 700
Myr after the Big Bang. BoRG[z9-10] is the continuation of a multi-year
pure-parallel near-IR and optical imaging campaign with the Wide Field Camera
3. The ongoing survey uses five filters, optimized for detecting the most
distant objects and offering continuous wavelength coverage from
{\lambda}=0.35{\mu}m to {\lambda}=1.7{\mu}m. We analyze the initial ~130
arcmin of area over 28 independent lines of sight (~25% of the total
planned) to search for z>7 galaxies using a combination of Lyman break and
photometric redshift selections. From an effective comoving volume of (5-25)
Mpc for magnitudes brighter than in the
-band respectively, we find five galaxy candidates at z~8.3-10
detected at high confidence (S/N>8), including a source at z~8.4 with mAB=24.5
(S/N~22), which, if confirmed, would be the brightest galaxy identified at such
early times (z>8). In addition, BoRG[z9-10] data yield four galaxies with . These new Lyman break galaxies with m are
ideal targets for follow-up observations from ground and space based
observatories to help investigate the complex interplay between dark matter
