Computing Individual Risks based on Family History in Genetic Disease in the Presence of Competing Risks
When considering a genetic disease with variable age at onset (ex: diabetes ,
familial amyloid neuropathy, cancers, etc.), computing the individual risk of
the disease based on family history (FH) is of critical interest both for
clinicians and patients. Such a risk is very challenging to compute because: 1)
the genotype X of the individual of interest is in general unknown; 2) the
posterior distribution P(X|FH, T > t) changes with t (T is the age at disease
onset for the targeted individual); 3) the competing risk of death is not
negligible. In this work, we present a modeling of this problem using a
Bayesian network mixed with (right-censored) survival outcomes where hazard
rates only depend on the genotype of each individual. We explain how belief
propagation can be used to obtain posterior distribution of genotypes given the
FH, and how to obtain a time-dependent posterior hazard rate for any individual
in the pedigree. Finally, we use this posterior hazard rate to compute
individual risk, with or without the competing risk of death. Our method is
illustrated using the Claus-Easton model for breast cancer (BC). This model
assumes an autosomal dominant genetic risk factor such as non-carriers
(genotype 00) have a BC hazard rate 0 (t) while carriers (genotypes
01, 10 and 11) have a (much greater) hazard rate 1 (t). Both hazard
rates are assumed to be piecewise constant with known values (cuts at 20, 30,.
.. , 80 years). The competing risk of death is derived from the national French
registry
Modelling the effect of carbon on deformation behaviour of twinning induced plasticity steels
In this article, a physical model describing the deformation behaviour of Twinning Induced Plasticity(TWIP) steels has been extended to include the effect of carbon content. The experimental validation and the analysis show that carbon mainly controls the maximum number of dislocations piled up at the twin boundary, resulting in the increase of back-stresses (i.e. kinematic hardening) and therefore the work hardening rate. This explanation seems to be in agreement with recent TEM observations. © The Author(s) 2011.
We report a case of anaplastic pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma occurred in a male of 13 years, who presented a syndrom of intracranial hypertension for a year and a half. CT-scan and MRI revealed a cystic and solid tumor in the left parietal lobe. The surgical resection was total. Histopathological examination demonstrated a pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma with malignant transformation. Seven months later, the patient has a deterioration of his general condition, the CT revealed a tumor recurrence, which was reoperated. The patient died a few days after surgery. This rare case of anaplastic pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma is presented, discussed and illustrated in this paper.
Onset of puberty in Ouled Djellal rams
peer reviewedThe aim of this study is to evaluate the body and testicular growth
performances in Ouled Djellal rams from weaning until twelve months of age.
It also contributes to the study of the onset of puberty in Ouled Djellal rams
and to follow the subsequent evolution of their semen production. Weekly
measurements of body weight, chest perimeter, scrotal circumference,
testicular length and diameter, as well as the cauda-epididymis diameter of
the gonads were conducted in ten rams, from weaning and until the onset
of puberty. Semen collection was also performed in the same manner with
an electroejaculator in order to define puberty. After the onset of puberty,
observations were made fortnightly on body weight, chest perimeter, testis
morphometry and the evolution of semen characteristics.
Puberty settled at an average age of 228± 7 days with an average weight
of 40.4 ± 1.2 kg. Highly significant correlations were observed between
testicular measurements and those of the body. Similar significant
correlations were also observed between testicular measurements (especially
scrotal circumference) and semen characteristics after puberty
Influence of density on the electrical behaviour of a steel metallic wool
