Enhancing image contrast using coherent states and photon number resolving detectors
We experimentally map the transverse profile of diffraction-limited beams
using photon-number-resolving detectors. We observe strong compression of
diffracted beam profiles for high detected photon number. This effect leads to
higher contrast than a conventional irradiance profile between two Airy
disk-beams separated by the Rayleigh criterion.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Optics Expres
Non-communicating hydrocephalus from pork tapeworm obstructing the foramina of Monro and its endoscopic management; a case report from Europe
Introduction: Taenia solium is the main causative agent of neurocysticercosis. The tapeworm can manifest inside the ventricles, usually in the form of intracranial hypertension. We present a case of hydrocephalus as a result of a neurocysticercosis lesion obstructing both foramina of Monro. Research question: A comprehensive review of the management is provided, as well as video footage (an invaluable resource to compare, critique and learn with other institutions). Material and methods: A 23-year-old female from Honduras presented with a 7-day complaint of headache. On exam, she was hyperreflexic, but otherwise normal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a non-specific lesion at the level of the foramina of Monro, with associated hydrocephalus. Additional testing was normal. Results: The patient underwent an endoscopic ventriculoscopy with partial excision of the lesion and subsequent implantation of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. On postoperative MRI, hydrocephalus resolved and pathological analysis identified the parasite as Taenia solium. Albendazole was administered for 14 days. Discussion and conclusion: Neurocysticercosis should be considered in patients presenting with hydrocephalus, especially those from endemic areas. The long-term prognosis of ventricular neurocysticercosis might be favourable, provided that adequate care is given timely. Endoscopic surgery seems to be effective for the removal of parasitic lesions. However, studies comparing open versus endoscopic surgery are lacking. The majority of cases in the literature correspond to America and Asia. This case shows that neurocysticercosis is also present in Europe, and that a high index of suspicion is necessar
Two-photon diffraction and quantum lithography
We report a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of quantum
lithography. Utilizing the entangled nature of a two-photon state, the
experimental results have bettered the classical diffraction limit by a factor
of two. This is a quantum mechanical two-photon phenomenon but not a violation
of the uncertainty principle.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures Submitted to Physical Review Letter
A reforma do PER
This paper, under the topic “Reform of the Special Revitalization Process (P.E.R.)”, is a requirement for the fulfillment of the second semester of the Forensic Sciences Master’s Degree at the University Lisbon School of Law.
The paper’s purpose is the understanding of the Portuguese Insolvency Law, more specifically, the study of the recent amendment of the Portuguese Insolvency and Corporate Recovery Code (C.I.R.E.), with special emphasis on the changes introduced to the PER system and the creation of a Special Process for Payment
Arrangements (P.E.A.P.), regulated under the decree law nº 79/ 2017, of the 30th of June.
The paper is divided into four chapters. Chapter One concerns the history of recovery mechanisms, for further understanding on why corporate recovery has been given a higher priority than insolvency. Chapter Two is about development and PER legal proceedings, emphasizing on the scope of subjective and objective
enforcement. Chapter Three is a detailed study of the new PEAP. Lastly, Chapter Four describes how the PER Reform was relevant and contributed to the growth of national economy
Generation of Entangled N-Photon States in a Two-Mode Jaynes-Cummings Model
We describe a mathematical solution for the generation of entangled N-photon
states in two field modes. A simple and compact solution is presented for a
two-mode Jaynes-Cummings model by combining the two field modes in a way that
only one of the two resulting quasi-modes enters in the interaction term. The
formalism developed is then applied to calculate various generation
probabilities analytically. We show that entanglement, starting from an initial
field and an atom in one defined state may be obtained in a single step. We
also show that entanglement may be built up in the case of an empty cavity and
excited atoms whose final states are detected, as well as in the case when the
final states of the initially excited atoms are not detected.Comment: v2: 5 pages, RevTeX4, minor text changes + 1 figure added, revised

Two-Photon Interferometry for High-Resolution Imaging
We discuss advantages of using non-classical states of light for two aspects
of optical imaging: creating of miniature images on photosensitive substrates,
which constitutes the foundation for optical lithography, and imaging of micro
objects. In both cases, the classical resolution limit given by the Rayleigh
criterion is approximately a half of the optical wavelength. It has been shown,
however, that by using multi-photon quantum states of the light field, and
multi-photon sensitive material or detector, this limit can be surpassed. We
give a rigorous quantum mechanical treatment of this problem, address some
particularly widespread misconceptions and discuss the requirements for turning
the research on quantum imaging into a practical technology.Comment: Presented at PQE 2001. To appear in Special Issue of Journal of

Entangled-State Lithography: Tailoring any Pattern with a Single State
We demonstrate a systematic approach to Heisenberg-limited lithographic image
formation using four-mode reciprocal binominal states. By controlling the
exposure pattern with a simple bank of birefringent plates, any pixel pattern
on a grid, occupying a square with the side half a
wavelength long, can be generated from a -photon state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
