MOUTHS FILLED WITH SONG: BRITISH REFORM JUDAISM THROUGH THE LENS OF ITS MUSIC

The Movement for Reform Judaism [MRJ] - has been undergoing substantial changes in its style and patterns of worship. The introduction of a new prayer book has been accompanied by a pronounced focus on the music of the various synagogues, as a key element in the re-envisioning of prayer and spirituality in 21st century congregations. These have taken place within the context of the wider context of synagogue renewal, which surfaced first in the USA as Synagogue 2000 (now Synagogue 3000), entailing study, reflection and implementation of a variety of different changes in the hope of attracting and retaining Jews in synagogue services. This thesis focuses on the relationship between forms of liturgical and ritual music and patterns of spirituality and identity within the UK Reform Jewish world during a period of significant social change. ‘Getting the music right’ is, for some, a major aspect in synagogal renewal and commands a central place in the focus on Judaism into the twenty-first century. Focusing on attitudes towards and experiments with music afford a distinctive manner to access the complexities involved in the interplay of diverse community traditions and contemporary pressures for change. The complexities of this examination are mirrored in the interdisciplinary perspective of this thesis, as it encompasses the theoretical resources of theological, historical, and social scientific disciplines. Through the historical expansion of the movement, and the synagogues in which I have engaged in ethnographic research, we will note the shifts in movement and synagogal musical cultures, each affording a unique perspective on music in worship. Each helps to elucidate a little bit what constitutes the perspectives and preoccupations of the Anglo-Reform Jewish world

Diversified versus Specialized Swine and Grain Operations

    Get PDF
Stochastic budget analysis compares diversified hog and grain operations to a specialized cash grain operation based on fixed labor resource. Benefits to diversified farms include decreased fertilizer costs due to manure application, shared machinery costs, and more stable grain price/cost assurances. As modeled manure application covers nearly all fertilizer requirements of the grain operation, greatly reducing fertilizer costs. The diversified operation is able to have dual-purpose tractors, enabling them to spread the tractor costs over more hours. Lastly, combining a grain and hog operation allows both enterprises to improve price assurance by treating the grain operation as a cost center. Grain is priced to the hogs at cost of production, thereby protecting the hog operation from volatility in the corn market. The risk reduction benefit of diversification is overshadowed when the 2002 Farm Bill is included in the analysis

Mobile D-loops are a preferred substrate for the Bloom's syndrome helicase

The Bloom's syndrome helicase, BLM, is a member of the highly conserved RecQ family, and possesses both DNA unwinding and DNA strand annealing activities. BLM also promotes branch migration of Holliday junctions. One role for BLM is to act in conjunction with topoisomerase IIIα to process homologous recombination (HR) intermediates containing a double Holliday junction by a process termed dissolution. However, several lines of evidence suggest that BLM may also act early in one or more of the recombination pathways to eliminate illegitimate or aberrantly paired DNA joint molecules. We have investigated whether BLM can disrupt DNA displacement loops (D-loops), which represent the initial strand invasion step of HR. We show that mobile D-loops created by the RecA recombinase are a highly preferred substrate for BLM with the invading strand being displaced from the duplex. We have identified structural features of the D-loop that determine the efficiency with which BLM promotes D-loop dissociation. We discuss these results in the context of models for the role of BLM as an ‘anti-recombinase’

Virtual nitgrogen dioxide molecule dissociation in external electromagnetic fields

The model is proposed for describing a real nitrogen dioxide molecule by its two-dimensional analog, namely, the virtual molecule (VM). The proposed VM model provides the condition of coincidence between the fundamental eigenfrequencies of the real molecule and its virtual analog. The other VM parameters (bond length and atomic mass) are renormalized so that the molecule should steadily exist for a long time interval. Linear dynamics of VM atoms in the field of a monochromatic electromagnetic wave has been investigated. It is shown that under the action of an external electromagnetic field on the molecule at a resonance frequency, secular modes of vibrations are observed. The last ones are characterized by a time-linear growth of atomic oscillation amplitudes. The influence of the turn on of an external force at the time of stabilization of eigenfrequencies of the VM on the stability of VM atomic oscillations were made. It is shown that in some cases breaking of one of the VM bonds inevitably leads to the VM dissociation as a whole. As a result of numerical simulation, it has been established that the bond breaking has a threshold character, i.e., dissociation is not observed at the external force, which is below a certain value. In the region of forces exceeding the threshold values, the variation in the external electromagnetic field frequency is insensitive to the resonance effects that are due to the presence of dedicated frequencies of the VM. It is demonstrated that in the region, where the N – O bond breaking always takes place, there exist the O – O bond stability islands. Optimum parameters of VM dissociation have been determined.
