Nonlinear modeling proposal for the germination performance of Paspalum regnellii seeds: a species with forage potential in Brazil.
Finding qualified standard plants is an essential requirement in the search for high-quality pasture, fact that involves knowledge about the performance of the assessed seeds. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of seed weight on the germination behavior of Paspalum regnellii seeds through the logistic growth model. The adopted values were taken from an experiment conducted in 2016 under laboratory conditions. A pneumatic separator was used to select four seed classes, depending on the weight of one thousand seeds namely: Extra light, light, middle and weighted. The logistic model was adjusted to data about the germination rate of each class, and the parameters were compared through the F test. Germination rates between classes were compared based on recorded parameters and on model critical points. The logistic model adjusted well to the values and made it possible to use the parameters and critical points of the curve to describe the germination process. In addition to have low germination rate, seeds in the light-weight batch demanded longer to complete this process. Based on estimates about the parameters and the critical points of the model, the weighted-weight seeds were superior in terms of quality than seeds in the other batches, since they recorded higher germination rate in a shorter period-of-time
Advancing the scientific study of prehospital mass casualty response through a Translational Science process: the T1 scoping literature review stage
PurposeThe European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation funding program awarded the NIGHTINGALE grant to develop a toolkit to support first responders engaged in prehospital (PH) mass casualty incident (MCI) response. To reach the projects' objectives, the NIGHTINGALE consortium used a Translational Science (TS) process. The present work is the first TS stage (T1) aimed to extract data relevant for the subsequent modified Delphi study (T2) statements.MethodsThe authors were divided into three work groups (WGs) MCI Triage, PH Life Support and Damage Control (PHLSDC), and PH Processes (PHP). Each WG conducted simultaneous literature searches following the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. Relevant data were extracted from the included articles and indexed using pre-identified PH MCI response themes and subthemes.ResultsThe initial search yielded 925 total references to be considered for title and abstract review (MCI Triage 311, PHLSDC 329, PHP 285), then 483 articles for full reference review (MCI Triage 111, PHLSDC 216, PHP 156), and finally 152 articles for the database extraction process (MCI Triage 27, PHLSDC 37, PHP 88). Most frequent subthemes and novel concepts have been identified as a basis for the elaboration of draft statements for the T2 modified Delphi study.ConclusionThe three simultaneous scoping reviews allowed the extraction of relevant PH MCI subthemes and novel concepts that will enable the NIGHTINGALE consortium to create scientifically anchored statements in the T2 modified Delphi study
The ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector: readiness for the first proton beam
The Silicon Pixel Detector (SPD) is the innermost element of the ALICE Inner Tracking
System (ITS). The SPD consists of two barrel layers of hybrid silicon pixels surrounding the
beam pipe with a total of 48 10^7 pixel cells. The SPD features a very low material budget, a 99.9%
efficient bidimensional digital response, a 12 micron spatial precision in the bending plane (rf ) and a
prompt signal as input to the L0 trigger. The SPD commissioning in the ALICE experimental area
is well advanced and it includes calibration runs with internal pulse and cosmic ray runs. In this
contribution the commissioning of the SPD is reviewed and the first results from runs with cosmic
rays and circulating proton beams are presented
Incised valley paleoenvironments interpreted by seismic stratigraphic approach in Patos Lagoon, Southern Brazil
<div><p>ABSTRACT: The Rio Grande do Sul (RS) coastal plain area (33,000 km 2 ) had its physiography modified several times through the Quaternary, responding to allogenic and autogenic forcings. The Patos Lagoon covers a significant area of RS coastal plain (10,000 km 2 ), where incised valleys were identified in previous works. About 1,000 km of high resolution (3.5 kHz) seismic profiles, radiocarbon datings, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and gravity cores were analyzed to interpret the paleoenvironmental evolution as preserved in incised valley infills. Seismic facies were recognized by seismic parameters. The sediment cores were used to ground-truth the seismic interpretations and help in the paleoenvironmental identification. Key surfaces were established to detail the stratigraphical framework, and seismic facies were grouped into four seismic units, which one classified in respective system tracts within three depositional sequences. The oldest preserved deposits are predominantly fluvial and estuarine facies, representing the falling stage and lowstand system tracts. The Holocene transgressive records are dominated by muddy material, mainly represented by estuarine facies with local variations. The transgression culminated in Late Holocene deposits of Patos Lagoon, representing the highstand system tract. The depositional pattern of the vertical succession was controlled by eustatic variations, while the autogenic forcing (paleogeography and sediment supply) modulated the local facies variation.</p></div
