Identification and Evaluation of Monitoring Techniques for the Performance of a Communication Network
This study investigates the application of statistical process control methods to monitoring the performance of a communication network. The methods applied include four different types of control charts. The literature search uncovered only one previous study that used a control chart to monitor a communication network. Using a case study of a communication network, four important issues for proper control chart usage are emphasized. These issues are: proper data collection rate due to autocorrelation, proper subgrouping of the data, ensuring that count data conforms to the assumptions of the binomial probability model before implementing p or np control charts, and viability of using subgroups of aftribute data as measurement data on an x-bar chart. The results indicate that control charts are indeed a viable method for monitoring a communication network\u27s performance over time, especially when the available data on the network is limited

Theory of mechanical unfolding of homopolymer globule: all-or-none transition in force-clamp mode vs phase coexistence in position-clamp mode
Equilibrium mechanical unfolding of a globule formed by long flexible
homopolymer chain collapsed in a poor solvent and subjected to an extensional
force f (force-clamp mode) or extensional deformation D (position-clamp mode)
is studied theoretically. Our analysis, like all previous analysis of this
problem, shows that the globule behaves essentially differently in two modes of
extension. In the force-clamp mode, mechanical unfolding of the globule with
increasing applied force occurs without intramolecular microphase segregation,
and at certain threshold value of the pulling force the globule unfolds as a
whole ("all-or-none" transition). The value of the threshold force and the
corresponding jump in the distance between the chain ends increase with a
deterioration of the solvent quality and/or with an increase in the degree of
polymerization. In the position-clamp mode, the globule unfolding occurs via
intramolecular microphase coexistence of globular and extended microphases
followed by an abrupt unraveling transition. Reaction force in the microphase
segregation regime demonstrates an "anomalous" decrease with increasing
extension. Comparison of deformation curves in force and position-clamp modes
demonstrates that at weak and strong extensions the curves for two modes
coincide, differences are observed in the intermediate extension range. Another
unfolding scenario is typical for short globules: in both modes of extension
they unfold continuously, without jumps or intramolecular microphase

Creativity and Autonomy in Swarm Intelligence Systems
This work introduces two swarm intelligence algorithms -- one mimicking the behaviour of one species of ants (\emph{Leptothorax acervorum}) foraging (a `Stochastic Diffusion Search', SDS) and the other algorithm mimicking the behaviour of birds flocking (a `Particle Swarm Optimiser', PSO) -- and outlines a novel integration strategy exploiting the local search properties of the PSO with global SDS behaviour. The resulting hybrid algorithm is used to sketch novel drawings of an input image, exploliting an artistic tension between the local behaviour of the `birds flocking' - as they seek to follow the input sketch - and the global behaviour of the `ants foraging' - as they seek to encourage the flock to explore novel regions of the canvas. The paper concludes by exploring the putative `creativity' of this hybrid swarm system in the philosophical light of the `rhizome' and Deleuze's well known `Orchid and Wasp' metaphor
Increased mitophagy in the skeletal muscle of spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy patients
Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is a neuromuscular disorder caused by polyglutamine expansion in the androgen receptor (AR) and characterized by the loss of lower motor neurons. Here we investigated pathological processes occurring in muscle biopsy specimens derived from SBMA patients and, as controls, age-matched healthy subjects and patients suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and neurogenic atrophy. We detected atrophic fibers in the muscle of SBMA, ALS and neurogenic atrophy patients. In addition, SBMA muscle was characterized by the presence of a large number of hypertrophic fibers, with oxidative fibers having a larger size compared with glycolytic fibers. Polyglutamine-expanded AR expression was decreased in whole muscle, yet enriched in the nucleus, and localized to mitochondria. Ultrastructural analysis revealed myofibrillar disorganization and streaming in zones lacking mitochondria and degenerating mitochondria. Using molecular (mtDNA copy number), biochemical (citrate synthase and respiratory chain enzymes) and morphological (dark blue area in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-stained muscle cross-sections) analyses, we found a depletion of the mitochondria associated with enhanced mitophagy. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed an increase of phosphatidylethanolamines and phosphatidylserines in mitochondria isolated from SBMA muscles, as well as a 50% depletion of cardiolipin associated with decreased expression of the cardiolipin synthase gene. These observations suggest a causative link between nuclear polyglutamine-expanded AR accumulation, depletion of mitochondrial mass, increased mitophagy and altered mitochondrial membrane composition in SBMA muscle patients. Given the central role of mitochondria in cell bioenergetics, therapeutic approaches toward improving the mitochondrial network are worth considering to support SBMA patients

Volcanic spreading of Vesuvius, a new paradigm for interpreting its volcanic activity
We integrate geologic, structural, leveling and Differential SAR Interferometry data to show that Vesuvius began to spread onto its sedimentary substratum about 3,600 years ago. Moreover, we model the detected deformation with a solution of the lubrication approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations to show that spreading may continue for about 7,200 years more. Correlation of volcanic spreading with phases of the eruptive activity suggests that Plinian eruptions, which are thought to pose the major hazard, are less likely to occur in the near future.Published1-4partially_ope
