Structural compliance, misfit strain and stripe nanostructures in cuprate superconductors
Structural compliance is the ability of a crystal structure to accommodate
variations in local atomic bond-lengths without incurring large strain
energies. We show that the structural compliance of cuprates is relatively
small, so that short, highly doped, Cu-O-Cu bonds in stripes are subject to a
tensile misfit strain. We develop a model to describe the effect of misfit
strain on charge ordering in the copper oxygen planes of oxide materials and
illustrate some of the low energy stripe nanostructures that can result.Comment: 4 pages 5 figure
Continuity Culture: A Key Factor for Building Resilience and Sound Recovery Capabilities
This article investigates the extent to which Jordanian service organizations seek to establish continuity culture through testing, training, and updating of their business continuity plans. A survey strategy was adopted in this research. Primary and secondary data were used. Semistructured interviews were conducted with five senior managers from five large Jordanian service organizations registered with the Amman Stock Exchange. The selection of organizations was made on the basis of simple random sampling. Interviews targeted the headquarters only in order to obtain a homogenous sample. Three out of five organizations could be regarded as crisis prepared and have better chances for recovery. The other two organizations exhibited characteristics of standard practice that only emphasizes the recovery aspect of business continuity management (BCM), while paying less attention to establishing resilient cultures and embedding BCM. The findings reveal that the ability to recover following major incidents can be improved by embedding BCM in the culture of the organization and by making BCM an enterprise-wide process. This is one of few meticulous studies that have been undertaken in the Middle East and the first in Jordan to investigate the extent to which service organizations focus on embedding BCM in the organizational culture
Chemical Pleurodesis For Hepatic Hydrothorax.
Ascites can occur after hepatic diseases causing dyspnea, coughing and pain. When associated with pleural effusion it can also increase respiratory distress. In a bibliographic survey hydrothorax has been observed in up to 20% of the patients and the kind of treatment is still being discussed. This case report shows the occurrence of a large volume of ascites and pleural effusion in a cirrhotic patient and his treatment. Report the case of a patient with hepatic cirrhosis due to chronic alcoholism and massive pleural effusion and ascites. He was submitted to several pleural paracenteses without success. Scintigraphy showed the presence of ascites and confirmed a possible pleuroperitoneal communication. The thoracic surgery group was called and after evaluation it was decided to submit the patient to a pulmonary decortication and chemical pleurodesis. These procedures were carried out with success. The pleural effusion was solved and the treatment of ascites was decided upon because the patient did not accept any surgical procedure. This treatment could be applied to patients with hydrothorax who could not be submitted to a liver transplantation.38125-
Role of cellular senescence and NOX4-mediated oxidative stress in systemic sclerosis pathogenesis.
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by progressive fibrosis of skin and numerous internal organs and a severe fibroproliferative vasculopathy resulting frequently in severe disability and high mortality. Although the etiology of SSc is unknown and the detailed mechanisms responsible for the fibrotic process have not been fully elucidated, one important observation from a large US population study was the demonstration of a late onset of SSc with a peak incidence between 45 and 54 years of age in African-American females and between 65 and 74 years of age in white females. Although it is not appropriate to consider SSc as a disease of aging, the possibility that senescence changes in the cellular elements involved in its pathogenesis may play a role has not been thoroughly examined. The process of cellular senescence is extremely complex, and the mechanisms, molecular events, and signaling pathways involved have not been fully elucidated; however, there is strong evidence to support the concept that oxidative stress caused by the excessive generation of reactive oxygen species may be one important mechanism involved. On the other hand, numerous studies have implicated oxidative stress in SSc pathogenesis, thus, suggesting a plausible mechanism in which excessive oxidative stress induces cellular senescence and that the molecular events associated with this complex process play an important role in the fibrotic and fibroproliferative vasculopathy characteristic of SSc. Here, recent studies examining the role of cellular senescence and of oxidative stress in SSc pathogenesis will be reviewed
Super-heavy fermion material as metallic refrigerant for adiabatic demagnetization cooling
Low-temperature refrigeration is of crucial importance in fundamental
research of condensed matter physics, as the investigations of fascinating
quantum phenomena, such as superconductivity, superfluidity and quantum
criticality, often require refrigeration down to very low temperatures.
Currently, cryogenic refrigerators with He gas are widely used for cooling
below 1 Kelvin. However, usage of the gas is being increasingly difficult due
to the current world-wide shortage. Therefore, it is important to consider
alternative methods of refrigeration. Here, we show that a new type of
refrigerant, super-heavy electron metal, YbCoZn, can be used for
adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration, which does not require 3He gas. A
number of advantages includes much better metallic thermal conductivity
compared to the conventional insulating refrigerants. We also demonstrate that
the cooling performance is optimized in YbScCoZn by
partial Sc substitution with 0.19. The substitution induces chemical
pressure which drives the materials close to a zero-field quantum critical
point. This leads to an additional enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect in
low fields and low temperatures enabling final temperatures well below 100 mK.
Such performance has up to now been restricted to insulators. Since nearly a
century the same principle of using local magnetic moments has been applied for
adiabatic demagnetization cooling. This study opens new possibilities of using
itinerant magnetic moments for the cryogen-free refrigeration

Métodos indiretos para estimar a composição química da carcaça de novilhos Nelore. 1. Gravidade especifica.
Foram utilizados 31 novilhos Nelore com peso vivo entre 245 e 289 kg e com idade entre 20 e 29,7 meses no abate para estabelecer equações de estimativa da composição química da carcaça através da gravidade especifica. A composição da carcaça foi determinada em amostras tomadas apos moagem completa da meia carcaça esquerda. As equações lineares de estimativa da porcentagem de água e extrato etéreo, utilizando a gravidade especifica da carcaça como variável independente, apresentaram baixa precisão (R2 = 0,54 e 0,64 Syx = 2,565 e 2,969), o mesmo acontecendo quando utilizou-se a gravidade especifica do traseiro (R2 = 0,63 e 0,74 Syx = 2,323 e 2,543), respectivamente para os teores de água e extrato etéreo. A inclusão do peso vazio, peso da carcaça quente, das quantidades de gordura interna, renal e pélvica e de medidas lineares como altura da anca e comprimento e profundidade da carcaça, em regressões múltiplas, melhorou a precisão das equações de estimativa, levando os coeficientes de determinação para 0,96 e 0,99 respectivamente, para as percentagens de água e extrato etéreo
Métodos indiretos para estimar a composição química da carcaça de novilhos Nelore. 2. Cortes da costela.
O objetivo do trabalho foi devenvolver equacoes de estimativa da composicao quimica da carcaca de novilhos Nelore utilizando-se dos seguintes metodos indiretos: 1) composicao fisica do corte da 9-10-11a costelas, 2) composicao fisica do corte da 10a costela, 3) composicao quimica do corte da 10a costela. Foram utilizados 31 carcacas provenientes de novilhos Nelore com peso vivo entre 245 e 489 kg e com idade entre 20 e 29,7 meses no abate. A composicao quimica da carcaca foi determinada em amostras tornadas na meia carcaca esquerda apos a moagem completa dos tecidos. As equacoes lineares de estimativa utilizando a porcentagem de gordura separavel dos cortes 9-10-11a e da 10a costelas e a porcentagem de extrato etereo do corte da 10a costela como variaveisindependentes estimaram com alta precisao as porcentagens da agua (R2 = 0,86, 0,86, 0,76 e 0,81) e extrato etereo (R2 = 0,89, 0,81 e 0,82) da carcaca. Regressoes multiplas incluindo o peso da carcaca quente e as porcentagens e quantidades dos componentes fisicos da 9-10-11a e 10a e quimicos da 10a costela estimaram com alta precisao as porcentagens de agua (R2 = 0,89, 0,81, 0,86 e Syx = 1,410, 1,848, 1.612) e de extrato etereo (R2 = 0,90 0,85, 0,86 e Syx = 1631, 2,038, 2,154) da carcaca
