Construction of Motorway on Double Porosity Clay Fill

    Get PDF
The paper describes the mechanical behaviour of double porosity clay fills. A trial embankment had been constructed on a 20-30 year-old landfill and monitored for 3 years. The embankment was instrumented by hydrostatic levelling profiles, surveying reference points, pore pressure gauges, inclinometers and depth reference points. Centrifuge modelling of the embankment behaviour on the consolidated landfill was carried out in the geotechnical centrifuge at ETH Zürich in Switzerland. The models were instrumented similarly to the real embankment with pore pressure transducers and a newly developed tool called “system of straws” for measurement of deformation at different depths. Surface deformations were measured by laser scanning. The results of centrifuge modelling are compared with in-situ data. The degradation of the double porosity structure in the vertical profile of the landfill, and its influence on the permeability of the soil is discussed

SHEAR STRENGTH OF SOILS FROM THE DOBKOVICKY LANDSLIDE IN THE CENTRAL BOHEMIAN UPLANDS DETERMINATED BY LABORATORY TESTS

The aim of this paper is to evaluate soil shear strength from the Dobkovicky landslide. The landslide was activated on June 6, 2013 after heavy rains and the D8 motorway, which was under construction at the time, was damaged. The laboratory tests were carried out on two types of soils, clay and tuff, both from the surface of the rupture. Critical and residual friction angles were evaluated on both types of soils

RURAL SETTLEMENTS AS BIOCENTRES FOR CARABID BEETLES (COLEOPTERA, CARABIDAE) IN AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE

    Get PDF
The biodiversity of carabid beetles was studied using pitfall trapping in two small settlements in the agricultural landscape of southern Bohemia (Central Europe) and in the Vltava housing quarter of České Budějovice. The results were compared with surrounding agricultural landscape. The highest number of carabid species in communities was found in the intensively managed agricultural landscape and in Vltava housing quarter. The number of species was lower in villages but the higher activity of stenotopic carabids was typical for these localities. Ordination of species did not found the distinct difference with exception of three species preferring wet biotopes with clay soils. Ordination of samples reflect the clear difference of samples from the surrounding agricultural landscape and samples from the Vltava housing quarter. Rural settlements are suitable for some stenotopic and protected carabids in monotonous agricultural landscape

Changing climate both increases and decreases European river floods

    Get PDF
Climate change has led to concerns about increasing river floods resulting from the greater water-holding capacity of a warmer atmosphere. These concerns are reinforced by evidence of increasing economic losses associated with flooding in many parts of the world, including Europe. Any changes in river floods would have lasting implications for the design of flood protection measures and flood risk zoning. However, existing studies have been unable to identify a consistent continental-scale climatic-change signal in flood discharge observations in Europe, because of the limited spatial coverage and number of hydrometric stations. Here we demonstrate clear regional patterns of both increases and decreases in observed river flood discharges in the past five decades in Europe, which are manifestations of a changing climate. Our results—arising from the most complete database of European flooding so far—suggest that: increasing autumn and winter rainfall has resulted in increasing floods in northwestern Europe; decreasing precipitation and increasing evaporation have led to decreasing floods in medium and large catchments in southern Europe; and decreasing snow cover and snowmelt, resulting from warmer temperatures, have led to decreasing floods in eastern Europe. Regional flood discharge trends in Europe range from an increase of about 11 per cent per decade to a decrease of 23 per cent. Notwithstanding the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the observational record, the flood changes identified here are broadly consistent with climate model projections for the next century, suggesting that climate-driven changes are already happening and supporting calls for the consideration of climate change in flood risk management

The thesis is focused on several specific areas. The first area is the identification of trends in the field of Business Intelligence in recent years. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on implementation these trends into practice. The main purpose is to show the possible use of the Business Intelligence in the nontraditional sectors on the real-world examples . What is also important, is a section dedicated to case studies, because it shows use of Business Intelligence in the real-world companies and institutions. The work is divided into several parts in which are desribed components of Business Intelligence, new trends in the field of BI, future of BI, putting into practice, suggestion for different types of enteprises and case studies from real-world praction. The main purpose of the thesis is to serve as a guide to the world of BI and its uses in the practice
