New Record of \u3ci\u3eBrachycercus Maculatus\u3c/i\u3e Berner (Ephemeroptera: Caenidae) From New York and a Key to Larvae of Northeastern Species
Brachycercus maculatus, a member of a rare group of mayflies, is now recorded for the first time from New York State in the upper Hudson River. An illustrated key to the Brachycercus larvae of northeastern North America is provided to spur further study of the genus in the region
Detection of CO and Dust Emission in Near-Infrared Spectra of SN 1998S
Near-infrared spectra (0.95 -- 2.4 micron) of the peculiar Type IIn supernova
1998S in NGC 3877 from 95 to 355 days after maximum light are presented. K-band
data taken at days 95 and 225 show the presence of the first overtone of CO
emission near 2.3 micron, which is gone by day 355. An apparent extended blue
wing on the CO profile in the day 95 spectrum could indicate a large CO
expansion velocity (~2000 -- 3000 km/s). This is the third detection of
infrared CO emission in nearly as many Type II supernovae studied, implying
that molecule formation may be fairly common in Type II events, and that the
early formation of molecules in SN 1987A may be typical rather than
exceptional. Multi-peak hydrogen and helium lines suggest that SN 1998S is
interacting with a circumstellar disk, and the fading of the red side of this
profile with time is suggestive of dust formation in the ejecta, perhaps
induced by CO cooling. Continuum emission that rises towards longer wavelengths
(J -> K) is seen after day 225 with an estimated near-infrared luminosity >~
10^40 erg/s. This may be related to the near-infrared excesses seen in a number
of other supernovae. If this continuum is due to free-free emission, it
requires an exceptionally shallow density profile. On the other hand, the shape
of the continuum is well fit by a 1200 +- 150 K blackbody spectrum possibly due
to thermal emission from dust. Interestingly, we observe a similar 1200 K
blackbody-like, near-infrared continuum in SN 1997ab, another Type IIn
supernova at an even later post-maximum epoch (day 1064+). A number of dust
emission scenarios are discussed, and we conclude that the NIR dust continuum

Extraordinary Late-Time Infrared Emission of Type IIn Supernovae
Near-Infrared (NIR) observations are presented for five Type IIn supernovae
(SN 1995N, SN 1997ab, SN 1998S, SN 1999Z, and SN 1999el) that exhibit strong
infrared excesses at late times (t >= 100 d). H- and K-band emission from these
objects is dominated by a continuum that rises toward longer wavelengths. The
data are interpreted as thermal emission from dust, probably situated in a
pre-existing circumstellar nebula. The IR luminosities implied by single
temperature blackbody fits are quite large,> 10^(41 - 42) erg s^-1, and the
emission evolves slowly, lasting for years after maximum light. For SN 1995N,
the integrated energy release via IR dust emission was 0.5 -- 1 * 10^50 erg. A
number of dust heating scenarios are considered, the most likely being an
infrared echo poweredby X-ray and UV emissions from the shock interaction with

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Cosmology from Galaxy Clusters Detected via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect
We present constraints on cosmological parameters based on a sample of
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich-selected galaxy clusters detected in a millimeter-wave
survey by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. The cluster sample used in this
analysis consists of 9 optically-confirmed high-mass clusters comprising the
high-significance end of the total cluster sample identified in 455 square
degrees of sky surveyed during 2008 at 148 GHz. We focus on the most massive
systems to reduce the degeneracy between unknown cluster astrophysics and
cosmology derived from SZ surveys. We describe the scaling relation between
cluster mass and SZ signal with a 4-parameter fit. Marginalizing over the
values of the parameters in this fit with conservative priors gives sigma_8 =
0.851 +/- 0.115 and w = -1.14 +/- 0.35 for a spatially-flat wCDM cosmological
model with WMAP 7-year priors on cosmological parameters. This gives a modest
improvement in statistical uncertainty over WMAP 7-year constraints alone.
Fixing the scaling relation between cluster mass and SZ signal to a fiducial
relation obtained from numerical simulations and calibrated by X-ray
observations, we find sigma_8 = 0.821 +/- 0.044 and w = -1.05 +/- 0.20. These
results are consistent with constraints from WMAP 7 plus baryon acoustic
oscillations plus type Ia supernoava which give sigma_8 = 0.802 +/- 0.038 and w
= -0.98 +/- 0.053. A stacking analysis of the clusters in this sample compared
to clusters simulated assuming the fiducial model also shows good agreement.
These results suggest that, given the sample of clusters used here, both the
astrophysics of massive clusters and the cosmological parameters derived from

Skyrmion Hall Effect Revealed by Direct Time-Resolved X-Ray Microscopy
Magnetic skyrmions are highly promising candidates for future spintronic
applications such as skyrmion racetrack memories and logic devices. They
exhibit exotic and complex dynamics governed by topology and are less
influenced by defects, such as edge roughness, than conventionally used domain
walls. In particular, their finite topological charge leads to a predicted
"skyrmion Hall effect", in which current-driven skyrmions acquire a transverse
velocity component analogous to charged particles in the conventional Hall
effect. Here, we present nanoscale pump-probe imaging that for the first time
reveals the real-time dynamics of skyrmions driven by current-induced spin
orbit torque (SOT). We find that skyrmions move at a well-defined angle
{\Theta}_{SH} that can exceed 30{\deg} with respect to the current flow, but in
contrast to theoretical expectations, {\Theta}_{SH} increases linearly with
velocity up to at least 100 m/s. We explain our observation based on internal
mode excitations in combination with a field-like SOT, showing that one must go

Early Infrared Spectral Development of V1187 Scorpii (Nova Scorpii 2004 No. 2)
We report on an unprecedented infrared time series of spectra of V1187 Sco, a very fast ONeMg nova. The observations covered a 56 day period (2004 August 6-September 30) starting 2 days after the nova's peak brightness. Time evolution of the spectra revealed changing line strengths and profiles on timescales of less than a day to weeks as the nova evolved from early postmaximum to early coronal phases. When our ground-based optical and Spitzer Space Telescope data were combined, the wavelength coverage of 0.38-36 μm allowed an accurate spectral energy distribution to be derived when it was about 6 weeks after outburst. Developing double structure in the He I lines showed them changing from narrow to broad in only a few days. Using the O I lines in combination with the optical spectra, we derived a reddening of E(B - V) = 1.56 ± 0.08 and a distance of 4.9 ± 0.5 kpc. Modeling of the ejected material strongly suggested that it was geometrically thick with ΔR/R = 0.8-0.9 (more of a wind than a shell) and a low filling factor of order a few percent. The line shapes were consistent with a cylindrical jet, bipolar, or spherical Hubble flow expansion with a maximum speed of about -3000 km s-1. The central peak appeared to be more associated with the spherical component, while the two peaks (especially in Hβ) suggested a ring with either a lower velocity component or with its axis inclined to the line of sight
Threshold-based insulin-pump interruption for reduction of hypoglycemia

The threshold-suspend feature of sensor-augmented insulin pumps is designed to
minimize the risk of hypoglycemia by interrupting insulin delivery at a preset sensor glucose value. We evaluated sensor-augmented insulin-pump therapy with and
without the threshold-suspend feature in patients with nocturnal hypoglycemia.
Methods
We randomly assigned patients with type 1 diabetes and documented nocturnal
hypoglycemia to receive sensor-augmented insulin-pump therapy with or without
the threshold-suspend feature for 3 months. The primary safety outcome was the
change in the glycated hemoglobin level. The primary efficacy outcome was the
area under the curve (AUC) for nocturnal hypoglycemic events. Two-hour threshold-suspend events were analyzed with respect to subsequent sensor glucose values.
Results
A total of 247 patients were randomly assigned to receive sensor-augmented insulinpump therapy with the threshold-suspend feature (threshold-suspend group, 121 patients) or standard sensor-augmented insulin-pump therapy (control group, 126 patients). The changes in glycated hemoglobin values were similar in the two groups.
The mean AUC for nocturnal hypoglycemic events was 37.5% lower in the thresholdsuspend group than in the control group (980±1200 mg per deciliter [54.4±66.6 mmol
per liter]×minutes vs. 1568±1995 mg per deciliter [87.0±110.7 mmol per liter]×minutes, P<0.001). Nocturnal hypoglycemic events occurred 31.8% less frequently in the
threshold-suspend group than in the control group (1.5±1.0 vs. 2.2±1.3 per patientweek, P<0.001). The percentages of nocturnal sensor glucose values of less than 50 mg
per deciliter (2.8 mmol per liter), 50 to less than 60 mg per deciliter (3.3 mmol per
liter), and 60 to less than 70 mg per deciliter (3.9 mmol per liter) were significantly
reduced in the threshold-suspend group (P<0.001 for each range). After 1438 instances at night in which the pump was stopped for 2 hours, the mean sensor glucose
value was 92.6±40.7 mg per deciliter (5.1±2.3 mmol per liter). Four patients (all in the
control group) had a severe hypoglycemic event; no patients had diabetic ketoacidosis.
Conclusions
This study showed that over a 3-month period the use of sensor-augmented insulinpump therapy with the threshold-suspend feature reduced nocturnal hypoglycemia,
without increasing glycated hemoglobin values. (Funded by Medtronic MiniMed;

Single-Step Selection of Bivalent Aptamers Validated by Comparison with SELEX Using High-Throughput Sequencing
The identification of nucleic acid aptamers would be advanced if they could be obtained after fewer rounds of selection and
amplification. In this paper the identification of bivalent aptamers for thrombin by SELEX and single-step selection are
compared using next generation sequencing and motif finding informatics. Results show that similar aptamers are
identified by both methods. This is significant because it shows that next generation sequencing and motif finding
informatics have the potential to simplify the selection of aptamers by avoiding multiple rounds of enzymatic transcription and amplification
Thrombin-receptor antagonist vorapaxar in acute coronary syndromes
Background: Vorapaxar is a new oral protease-activated-receptor 1 (PAR-1) antagonist that inhibits thrombin-induced platelet activation. Methods: In this multinational, double-blind, randomized trial, we compared vorapaxar with placebo in 12,944 patients who had acute coronary syndromes without ST-segment elevation. The primary end point was a composite of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, stroke, recurrent ischemia with rehospitalization, or urgent coronary revascularization. RESULTS: Follow-up in the trial was terminated early after a safety review. After a median follow-up of 502 days (interquartile range, 349 to 667), the primary end point occurred in 1031 of 6473 patients receiving vorapaxar versus 1102 of 6471 patients receiving placebo (Kaplan-Meier 2-year rate, 18.5% vs. 19.9%; hazard ratio, 0.92; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.85 to 1.01; P = 0.07). A composite of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, or stroke occurred in 822 patients in the vorapaxar group versus 910 in the placebo group (14.7% and 16.4%, respectively; hazard ratio, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.81 to 0.98; P = 0.02). Rates of moderate and severe bleeding were 7.2% in the vorapaxar group and 5.2% in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.16 to 1.58; P<0.001). Intracranial hemorrhage rates were 1.1% and 0.2%, respectively (hazard ratio, 3.39; 95% CI, 1.78 to 6.45; P<0.001). Rates of nonhemorrhagic adverse events were similar in the two groups. Conclusions: In patients with acute coronary syndromes, the addition of vorapaxar to standard therapy did not significantly reduce the primary composite end point but significantly increased the risk of major bleeding, including intracranial hemorrhage.
