Azimuthal asymmetries in lepton-pair production at a fixed-target experiment using the LHC beams (AFTER)
A multi-purpose fixed-target experiment using the proton and lead-ion beams
of the LHC was recently proposed by Brodsky, Fleuret, Hadjidakis and Lansberg,
and here we concentrate our study on some issues related to the spin physics
part of this project (referred to as AFTER). We study the nucleon spin
structure through and processes with a fixed-target experiment using
the LHC proton beams, for the kinematical region with 7 TeV proton beams at the
energy in center-of-mass frame of two nucleons GeV. We calculate
and estimate the azimuthal asymmetries of unpolarized and
dilepton production processes in the Drell--Yan continuum region and at the
-pole. We also calculate the , and
azimuthal asymmetries of and dilepton production
processes with the target proton and deuteron longitudinally or transversally
polarized in the Drell--Yan continuum region and around resonances region.
We conclude that it is feasible to measure these azimuthal asymmetries,
consequently the three-dimensional or transverse momentum dependent parton
distribution functions (3dPDFs or TMDs), at this new AFTER facility.Comment: 15 pages, 40 figures. Version accepted for publication in EPJ
Finite Size Scaling and Critical Exponents in Critical Relaxation
We simulate the critical relaxation process of the two-dimensional Ising
model with the initial state both completely disordered or completely ordered.
Results of a new method to measure both the dynamic and static critical
exponents are reported, based on the finite size scaling for the dynamics at
the early time. From the time-dependent Binder cumulant, the dynamical exponent
is extracted independently, while the static exponents and
are obtained from the time evolution of the magnetization and its higher

Three-dimensional parton distribution functions and in the polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process
We present predictions of the unweighted and weighted double spin asymmetries
related to the transversal helicity distribution and the longitudinal
transversity distribution , two of eight leading-twist transverse
momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) or three-dimensional parton
distribution functions (3dPDFs), in the polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan
process at typical kinematics on the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research
(FAIR). We conclude that FAIR is ideal to access the new 3dPDFs towards a

The cos 2 phi asymmetry of Drell-Yan and J/psi production in unpolarized ppbar scattering
We investigate the cos 2 phi azimuthal asymmetry in Drell--Yan and J/psi
production from unpolarized ppbar scattering at GSI-HESR energies. The
contribution to this asymmetry arising from the leading-twist Boer-Mulders
function h_1^perp(x, k_T^2), which describes a correlation between the
transverse momentum and the transverse spin of quarks in an unpolarized hadron,
is explicitly evaluated, and predictions for the GSI-HESR kinematic regime are
presented. We show that the cos 2 phi asymmetry is quite sizable both on the
J/psi peak and in the Drell-Yan continuum region. Therefore these processes may
offer an experimentally viable access to the Boer-Mulders function in the early

Refining the transit-timing and photometric analysis of TRAPPIST-1: Masses, Radii, densities, dynamics, and ephemerides
We have collected transit times for the TRAPPIST-1 system with the Spitzer
Space Telescope over four years. We add to these ground-based, HST and K2
transit time measurements, and revisit an N-body dynamical analysis of the
seven-planet system using our complete set of times from which we refine the
mass ratios of the planets to the star. We next carry out a photodynamical
analysis of the Spitzer light curves to derive the density of the host star and
the planet densities. We find that all seven planets' densities may be
described with a single rocky mass-radius relation which is depleted in iron
relative to Earth, with Fe 21 wt% versus 32 wt% for Earth, and otherwise
Earth-like in composition. Alternatively, the planets may have an Earth-like
composition, but enhanced in light elements, such as a surface water layer or a
core-free structure with oxidized iron in the mantle. We measure planet masses
to a precision of 3-5%, equivalent to a radial-velocity (RV) precision of 2.5
cm/sec, or two orders of magnitude more precise than current RV capabilities.
We find the eccentricities of the planets are very small; the orbits are
extremely coplanar; and the system is stable on 10 Myr timescales. We find
evidence of infrequent timing outliers which we cannot explain with an eighth
planet; we instead account for the outliers using a robust likelihood function.
We forecast JWST timing observations, and speculate on possible implications of
the planet densities for the formation, migration and evolution of the planet
system
Two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV
The first measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb
collisions at TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is
presented. We observe a growing trend with energy now not only for the
longitudinal and the outward but also for the sideward pion source radius. The
pion homogeneity volume and the decoupling time are significantly larger than

Suppression of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in central Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb
collisions at = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE
Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral
collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross
section. The measured charged particle spectra in and GeV/ are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same
, scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon
collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification
factor . The result indicates only weak medium effects ( 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions,
reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at -7GeV/ and increases
significantly at larger . The measured suppression of high- particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies,
indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at

Environmental geotechnics: Challenges and opportunities in the post-Covid-19 world
The outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic not only has created a health crisis across the world but is also expected to impact negatively the global economy and societies at a scale that is maybe larger than that of the 2008 financial crisis. Simultaneously, it has inevitably exerted many negative consequences on the geoenvironment on which human beings depend. The current paper articulates the role of environmental geotechnics in elucidating and mitigating the effects of the current pandemic. It is the belief of all authors that the Covid-19 pandemic presents not only significant challenges but also opportunities for the development of the environmental geotechnics field. This discipline should make full use of geoenvironmental researchers' and engineers' professional skills and expertise to look for development opportunities from this crisis, to highlight the irreplaceable position of the discipline in the global fight against pandemics and to contribute to the health and prosperity of communities, to serve humankind better. In order to reach this goal while taking into account the specificity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the uncertainty of its environmental effects, it is believed that more emphasis should be placed on the following research directions: pathogen-soil interactions; isolation and remediation technologies for pathogen-contaminated sites; new materials for pathogen-contaminated soil; recycling and safe disposal of medical wastes; quantification of uncertainty in geoenvironmental and epidemiological problems; emerging technologies and adaptation strategies in civil, geotechnical and geoenvironmental infrastructures; pandemic-induced environmental risk management; and modelling of pathogen transport and fate in geoenvironment, among others. Moreover, Covid-19 has made it clear to the environmental geotechnics community the importance of urgent international co-operation and of multidisciplinary research actions that must extend to a broad range of scientific fields, including medical and public health disciplines, in order to meet the complexities posed by the Covid-19 pandemic
Beauty photoproduction measured using decays into muons in dijet events in ep collisions at =318 GeV
The photoproduction of beauty quarks in events with two jets and a muon has
been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of
110 pb. The fraction of jets containing b quarks was extracted from the
transverse momentum distribution of the muon relative to the closest jet.
Differential cross sections for beauty production as a function of the
transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the muon, of the associated jet and
of , the fraction of the photon's momentum participating in
the hard process, are compared with MC models and QCD predictions made at
