Magnetism and Magnetic Isomers in Free Chromium Clusters
We have used the Stern-Gerlach deflection technique to study magnetism in
chromium clusters of 20-133 atoms. Between 60 K and 100 K, we observe that
these clusters have large magnetic moments and respond superparamagnetically to
applied magnetic fields. Using superparamagnetic theory, we have determined the
moment per atom for each cluster size and find that it often far exceeds the
moment per atom present anywhere in the bulk antiferromagnetic lattice.
Remarkably, our cluster beam contains two magnetically distinguishable forms of
each cluster size with >= 34 atoms. We attribute this observation to structural
isomers
Coal gasifier cogeneration powerplant project
Industrial cogeneration and utility pr systems were analyzed and a conceptual design study was conducted to evaluate the economic feasibility of a coal gasifier power plant for NASA Lewis Research Center. Site location, plant size, and electric power demand were considered in criteria developed for screening and selecting candidates that could use a wide variety of coals, including that from Ohio. A fluidized bed gasifier concept was chosen as the baseline design and key components of the powerplant were technically assessed. No barriers to environmental acceptability are foreseen. If funded, the powerplant will not only meet the needs of the research center, but will reduce the commercial risk for utilities and industries by fully verifying and demonstrating the technology, thus accelerating commercialization

The costs of health care continue to increase rapidly and steeply in the United States. One area of great expense is that of intensive care units (ICUs). The causes of inflation have not been addressed effectively. ICU resources could become stretched such that they may no longer be available. This paper discusses some of the ethics and concerns behind decision making when providing ICU services in the United States. In particular, the use of electronic records with decision making tools, risk-analysis methods, and documentation of patient wishes for extraordinary care may help with better utilization of resources in the future

An approach to Quantitative Interdependency Analysis, in the context of Large Complex Critical Infrastructures, is presented in this paper. A Discrete state–space, Continuous–time, Stochastic Process models the operation of critical infrastructure, taking interdependencies into account. Of primary interest are the implications of both model detail (that is, level of model abstraction) and model parameterisation for the study of dependencies.
