Canadian Incidence Study (CIS) of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect â 2003
The first cycle of the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (CIS-1998) was the first Canada-wide study to examine the incidence of reported child maltreatment and the characteristics of children and families investigated by Canadian child welfare services. Comparisons between the CIS-1998 and CIS-2003 will provide the opportunity for the first time in Canada to examine trends in child maltreatment such as the rates of child welfare services, maltreatment types, substantiation outcomes, and severity of maltreatment.
Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (CIS-2003) is designed to:
âą Produce national estimates of the incidence of investigated maltreatment in Canada in 2003;
âą Document changes from 1998 to 2003 and explore the reasons for change;
âą Examine variations in types and severity of maltreatment; and,
âą Explore the role of selected child and family characteristics on the incidence of maltreatment and on key service outcomes.

Post-Exercise Sweat Loss Estimation Accuracy of Athletes and Physically Active Adults: A Review
The main purposes of this review were to provide a qualitative description of nine investigations in which sweat losses were estimated by participants following exercise and to perform a quantitative analysis of the collective data. Unique estimations (n = 297) were made by 127 men and 116 women after a variety of exercise modalities in moderate to hot environmental conditions. Actual sweat loss exceeded estimated sweat loss (p \u3c 0.001) for women (1.072 ± 0.473 vs. 0.481 ± 0.372 L), men (1.778 ± 0.907 vs. 0.908 ± 0.666 L) and when all data were combined (1.428 ± 0.806 vs. 0.697 ± 0.581 L), respectively. However, estimation accuracy did not differ between women (55.2 ± 51.5%) and men (62.4 ± 54.5%). Underestimation of 50% or more of sweat losses were exhibited in 168 (54%) of estimation scenarios with heavier sweaters displaying a higher prevalence and trend of greater underestimations in general. Most modern guidelines for fluid intake during and between training bouts are based on approximate sweat loss estimation knowledge. These guidelines will likely have minimal efficacy if greater awareness of how to determine sweat losses and accurate recognition of sweat losses is not increased by coaches and athletes
Latent stem and progenitor cells in the hippocampus are activated by neural excitation
The regulated production of neurons in the hippocampus throughout life underpins important brain functions such as learning and memory. Surprisingly, however, studies have so far failed to identify a resident hippocampal stem cell capable of providing the renewable source of these neurons. Here, we report that depolarizing levels of KCl produce a threefold increase in the number of neurospheres generated from the adult mouse hippocampus. Most interestingly, however, depolarizing levels of KCl led to the emergence of a small subpopulation of precursors (approximately eight per hippocampus) with the capacity to generate very large neurospheres (>250 ”m in diameter). Many of these contained cells that displayed the cardinal properties of stem cells: multipotentiality and self-renewal. In contrast, the same conditions led to the opposite effect in the other main neurogenic region of the brain, the subventricular zone, in which neurosphere numbers decreased by ~40% in response to depolarizing levels of KCl. Most importantly, we also show that the latent hippocampal progenitor population can be activated in vivo in response to prolonged neural activity found in status epilepticus. This work provides the first direct evidence of a latent precursor and stem cell population in the adult hippocampus, which is able to be activated by neural activity. Because the latent population is also demonstrated to reside in the aged animal, defining the precise mechanisms that underlie its activation may provide a means to combat the cognitive deficits associated with a decline in neurogenesis

IgG antibody production and persistence to 6 months following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination: a Northern Ireland observational study
BACKGROUND: This study evaluates spike protein IgG antibody response following Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination using the AbC-19âą lateral flow device. METHODS: Plasma samples were collected from n=111 individuals from Northern Ireland. The majority were >50 years old and/or clinically vulnerable. Samples were taken at five timepoints from pre-vaccination until 6-months post-first dose. RESULTS: 20.3% of participants had detectable IgG responses pre-vaccination, indicating prior COVID-19. Antibodies were detected in 86.9% of participants three weeks after the first vaccine dose, falling to 74.7% immediately prior to the second dose, and rising to 99% three weeks post-second vaccine. At 6-months post-first dose, this decreased to 90.5%. At all timepoints, previously infected participants had significantly higher antibody levels than those not previously infected. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that strong anti-spike protein antibody responses are evoked in almost all individuals that receive two doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, and largely persist beyond six months after first vaccination
Stepping into the Same River Twice: Field Evidence for the Repeatability of a CO2 Injection Test
A single well characterisation test was conducted at the CO2CRC Otway storage site in Victoria, Australia, in 2011 and repeated in 2014. The near-well permeability was found to have declined nearly 60% since the 2011 test, while the residual saturation inferred from a variety of techniques was lower in 2014. There was a significant change in water chemistry, suggesting an alteration of near-well reservoir properties. Possible reasons for these changes are explored, and the implications for other field tests are discussed
Effects of antiplatelet therapy on stroke risk by brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases: subgroup analyses of the RESTART randomised, open-label trial
Background
Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage. We did subgroup analyses of the RESTART trial to explore whether these brain imaging features modify the effects of antiplatelet therapy

Arizonaâs vulnerable populations are struggling on a daily basis but usually do so in silence, undetected by traditional radar and rankings, often unaware themselves of their high risk for being pushed or pulled into a full crisis. Ineligible for financial assistance under strict eligibility guidelines, they donât qualify as poor because vulnerable populations are not yet in full crisis. To be clear, this report is not about the âpoor,â at least not in the limited sense of the word. It is about our underemployed wage earners, our single-parent households, our deployed or returning military members, our under-educated and unskilled workforce, our debt-ridden neighbors, our uninsured friends, our family members with no savings for an emergency, much less retirement
