The detection and parameter estimation of binary black hole mergers

In this dissertation we study gravitational-wave data analysis techniques for binary neutron star and black hole mergers. During its first observing run, the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (Advanced LIGO) reported the first, direct observations of gravitational waves from two binary black hole mergers. We present the results from the search for binary black hole mergers which unambiguously detected the binary black hole mergers. We determine the effect of calibration errors on the detection statistic of the search. Since the search is not designed to precisely measure the astrophysical parameters of the binary neutron star and black hole mergers, we use Bayesian methods to develop a new parameter estimation analysis. We demonstrate the performance of the analysis on the binary black hole mergers detected during Advanced LIGO’s first observing run. We use the parameter estimation analysis to assess the ability of gravitational-wave observatories to observe a gap in the black hole mass distribution between 52 M and 133 M due to pair-instability supernovae. Finally, we use simulated signals added to the Advanced LIGO detectors to validate the search and parameter estimation analyses used to publish the detection of the astrophysical events

Improved methods for detecting gravitational waves associated with short gamma-ray bursts

In the era of second generation ground-based gravitational wave detectors, short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) will be among the most promising astrophysical events for joint electromagnetic and gravitational wave observation. A targeted search for gravitational wave compact binary merger signals in coincidence with short GRBs was developed and used to analyze data from the first generation LIGO and Virgo instruments. In this paper, we present improvements to this search that enhance our ability to detect gravitational wave counterparts to short GRBs. Specifically, we introduce an improved method for estimating the gravitational wave background to obtain the event significance required to make detections; implement a method of tiling extended sky regions, as required when searching for signals associated to poorly localized GRBs from Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor or the InterPlanetary Network; and incorporate astrophysical knowledge about the beaming of GRB emission to restrict the search parameter space. We describe the implementation of these enhancements and demonstrate how they improve the ability to observe binary merger gravitational wave signals associated with short GRBs.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

An Electromyographic Study of Hip Muscle Activity in Varying Subtalar Joint Positions: Implications for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Risk

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine if subtalar joint position affects the activity of hip musculature in static standing, and by those results imply a correlation between foot position and ACL injury risk. Methods: Thirty participants took part in this randomized study in which EMG data were collected during 3 trials of 3 subtalar joint positions on the right lower extremity. Subtalar joint positions included a flat surface to represent a neutral subtalar position, a 5-degree incline rising from lateral to medial, promoting a supinated attitude of the foot, and the third position was on a 5- degree incline rising from medial to lateral promoting a pronated attitude of the foot. EMG activity was monitored in the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius during static standing. Results: All 30 subjects were tested individually and able to complete all of the trials required for data collection. Repeated analysis of variance (AN OVA) was utilized in each of the six muscle groups tested within the three different subtalar conditions. There was no significant difference found in the EMG activity of gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, biceps femoris, rectus femoris, and gastrocnemius. There was a significant difference found in the EMG activity of the tibialis anterior muscle demonstrating a higher EMG activity in subtalar flat and pronated positions as compared to the subtalar supination position. The EMG results from subject 12 had an unusually high amount of interference in the muscle activity of the rectus femoris and tibialis anterior. For this reason, readings in all three conditions for rectus femoris and tibialis anterior were discarded for subject 12. Conclusion: There was no significant difference found in hip muscle activity with varying subtalar joint positions. Even though our results showed no significant differences, future studies including more functional positions and kinetics throughout the lower extremity might produce results that demonstrate a relationship between the two areas and, therefore, possibly identify this relationship as a determinant for anterior cruciate ligament injury risk
