Suitability of GPUs for real-time control of large astronomical adaptive optics instruments
Adaptive optics (AO) is a technique for correcting aberrations introduced when light propagates through a medium, for example, the light from stars propagating through the turbulent atmosphere. The components of an AO instrument are: (1) a camera to record the aberrations, (2) a corrective mechanism to correct them, (3) a real-time controller (RTC) that processes the camera images and steers the corrective mechanism on milliseconds timescales. We have accelerated the image processing for the AO RTC with the use of graphics processing units (GPUs). It is crucial that the image is processed before the atmospheric turbulence has changed, i.e., in one or two milliseconds. The main task is to transfer the images to the GPU memory with a minimum delay. The key result of this paper is a demonstration that this can be done fast enough using commercial frame grabbers and standard CUDA tools. Our benchmarking image consists of 1.6×1061.6×106 pixels out of which 1.2×1061.2×106 are used in processing. The images are characterized and reduced into a set of 9248 numbers; about one-third of the total processing time is spent on this characterization. This set of numbers is then used to calculate the commands for the corrective system, which takes about two-third of the total time. The processing rate achieved on a single GPU is about 700 frames per second (fps). This increases to 1100 fps (1565 fps) if we use two (four) GPUs. The variation in processing time (jitter) has a root-mean-square value of 20–30 μμ s and about one outlier in a million cycles
Search for the h_c meson in B^+- ->h_c K^+-
We report a search for the meson via the decay chain , \etac \gamma with and
. No significant signals are observed. We obtain upper limits on the
branching fractions for in bins of the
invariant mass. The results are based on an analysis of 253
fb of data collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB
collider.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
The UTfit Collaboration Average of D meson mixing data: Spring 2012
We derive constraints on the parameters , and
that describe meson mixing using all available data, allowing
for CP violation. We also provide posterior distributions and predictions for
observable parameters appearing in physics.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Evidence for CP Violation in B0 -> D+D- Decays
We report measurements of the branching fraction and CP violation parameters
in B0 -> D+D- decays. The results are based on a data sample that contains 535
x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance, with the Belle
detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain [1.97 +- 0.20
(stat) +- 0.20 (syst)] x 10^(-4) for the branching fraction of B0 -> D+D-. The
measured values of the CP violation parameters are: S = -1.13 +- 0.37 +- 0.09,
A = 0.91 +- 0.23 +- 0.06, where the first error is statistical and the second
is systematic. We find evidence of CP violation in B0 -> D+D- at the 4.1 sigma
confidence level. While the value of S is consistent with expectations from
other measurements, the value of the parameter A favors large direct CP
violation at the 3.2 sigma confidence level, in contradiction to Standard Model
expectations.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PR
Study of the Baryon-Antibaryon Low-Mass Enhancements in Charmless Three-body Baryonic B Decays
The angular distributions of the baryon-antibaryon low-mass enhancements seen
in the charmless three-body baryonic B decays B+ -> p pbar K+, B0 -> p pbar Ks,
and B0 -> p Lambdabar pi- are reported. A quark fragmentation interpretation is
supported, while the gluonic resonance picture is disfavored. Searches for the
Theta+ and Theta++ pentaquarks in the relevant decay modes and possible
glueball states G with 2.2 GeV/c2 < M-ppbar < 2.4 GeV/c2 in the ppbar systems
give null results. We set upper limits on the products of branching fractions,
B(B0 -> Theta+ p)\times B(Theta+ -> p Ks) Theta++
pbar) \times B(Theta++ -> p K+) G K+) \times
B(G -> p pbar) < 4.1 \times 10^{-7} at the 90% confidence level. The analysis
is based on a 140 fb^{-1} data sample recorded on the Upsilon(4S) resonance
with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure files, update of hep-ex/0409010 for journal

Evidence of the Purely Leptonic Decay B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar
We present the first evidence of the decay B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar using 414
fb^-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at
the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Events are tagged by fully
reconstructing one of the B mesons in hadronic modes. We detect the signal with
a significance of 3.5 standard deviations including systematics, and measure
the branching fraction to be Br(B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar) = (1.79
+0.56-0.49(stat) +0.46-0.51(syst))*10^-4. This implies that f_B = 0.229
+0.036-0.031(stat) +0.034-0.037(syst) GeV and is the first direct measurement
of this quantity.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letter
Search for B^0-> p p-bar, Lambda Lambda-bar and B^+ -> p Lambda-bar at Belle
We report on a new search for two-body baryonic decays of the B meson.
Improved sensitivity compared to previous Belle results is obtained from 414
fb^-1 of data that corresponds to 449 million B B-bar pairs, which were taken
on the Upsilon(4S) resonance and collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB
e^+e^- collider. No significant signals are observed and we set the 90%
confidence level upper limits: Br(B^0-> p pbar) Lambda
Lambda-bar) p Lambda-bar) < 3.2X10^-7.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PR
Observation of B+->Lambda_c+Lambda_c-K+ and B0->Lambda_c+Lambda_c^-K0 decays
We report first measurements of the doubly charmed baryonic B decays
B->Lambda_c+Lambda_c-K. The B+->Lambda_c+Lambda_c-K+ decay is observed with a
branching fraction of (6.5+1.0-0.9+-1.1+-3.4)x10^{-4} and a statistical
significance of 15.4sigma. The B0->Lambda_c+Lambda_c-K0 decay is observed with
a branching fraction of (7.9+2.9-2.3+-1.2+-4.2)x10^{-4} and a statistical
significance of 6.6sigma. The branching fraction errors are statistical,
systematic, and the error resulting from the uncertainty of Lambda_c+->pK-pi+
decay branching fraction. The analysis is based on 357fb-1 of data accumulated
at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e-
collider.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Measurement of the branching fractions for B- --> D(*)+ pi- l- nu-bar and B0bar --> D(*)0 pi+ l- nu-bar
We report on a measurement of the branching fractions for B- --> D(*)+ pi- l-
nu-bar and B0bar --> D(*)0 pi+ l- nu-bar with 275 million BBbar events
collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB. Events
are tagged by fully reconstructing one of the B mesons in hadronic modes. We
obtain Br(B- --> D+ pi- l- nu-bar) = (0.54 +/- 0.07(stat) +/- 0.07(syst) +/-
0.06(BR)) x 10^-2, Br(B- --> D*+ pi- l- nu-bar) = (0.67 +/- 0.11(stat) +/-
0.09(syst) +/- 0.03(BR)) x 10^-2, Br(B0bar --> D0 pi+ l- nu-bar) = (0.33 +/-
0.06(stat) +/- 0.06(syst) +/- 0.03(BR)) x 10^-2, Br(B0bar --> D*0 pi+ l-
nu-bar) = (0.65 +/- 0.12(stat) +/- 0.08(syst) +/- 0.05(BR)) x 10^-2, where the
third error comes from the error on Bbar --> D(*) l- nu-bar decays.
Contributions from B0bar --> D*+ l- nu-bar decays are excluded in the
measurement of B0bar --> D0 pi+ l- nu-bar.Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Physical Review D (Rapid
