The Middle Grades Principal: A Research Agenda
Advocates for middle grades education suggest that principals are critical to the implementation of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and organizational structures that meet young adolescent needs. Yet, there is little evidence associating principal practices outlined by middle grades proponents to outcomes or how principals learn the knowledge and practices middle grades advocates propose. This essay explores the limited research connecting middle grades principal leadership with school and student outcomes, how middle school principals learn the practices outlined by proponents of middle grades education, and proposes a research agenda and questions about middle grades principal learning
Crossing Selma\u27s Bridge: Integrating Visual Discovery Strategy and Young Adult Literature to Promote Dialogue and Understanding
Urban communities, separated by race and class, experience a disproportionate number of gun deaths, police shootings, crime, violent and nonviolent protests, as well as disparities in housing, education, and employment. These discussions are visual and textual, appearing in both traditional and social media outlets. How do adolescents read and make sense of these images? We discuss integrating a Social Studies practice, Visual Discovery Strategy, with Young Adult Literature to provide students with the skills to both critique images from the events in their lives and produce responses through both traditional and digital methods
Policies and programming for safer schools: Are ''anti-bullying'' approaches impeding education for peacebuilding?
Las medidas contra la violencia que prevalecen en las escuelas públicas, especialmente en un contexto actual de un énfasis creciente ante el bullying (acoso escolar), se centran más en la vigilancia y en el control que en la construcción de relaciones sanas o en el aprendizaje sobre el conflicto y la paz. Este énfasis en dichas políticas incrementa los riesgos de marginalización y limita las oportunidades disponibles para que la diversidad de estudiantes desarrolle su autonomía y la corresponsabilidad. Este estudio cualitativo examina las interpretaciones contrastantes de los educadores en relación a las iniciativas de seguridad implementadas en las escuelas y a las prácticas de manejo de conflictos, en escuelas con mayor o menor grado de relaciones pacíficas, dentro de poblaciones urbanas con condiciones ambientales generadoras de estrés. El estudio también señala áreas de cambio potenciales para esclarecer y redefinir políticas institucionales con el fin de mejorar un entorno que fomente la construcción de la paz en las escuelas de una manera sustentable.Prevailing anti-violence practices in public schools, especially in the context of recently increased emphasis on bullying, often allocate more resources to surveillance and control than to facilitation of healthy relationships or conflict/ peace learning. This policy emphasis increases the risks of marginalization and reduces opportunities for diverse students to develop autonomy and mutual responsibility. This qualitative study examines educators’ contrasting interpretations of various school safety and conflict management initiatives in practice, in peaceful and less peaceful schools serving stressed urban populations, and points out spaces for potential policy shifts and clarifications that could enhance sustainable peacebuilding in schools.Este estudio fue posible gracias al apoyo económico otorgado por el Consejo Canadiense de Investigación en Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades
Middle Grades Principal Credentialing: A Vanishing Requirement
Limited research explores how school administrators learn the leadership skills, knowledge, and dispositions that will support young adolescents, particularly how administrators are prepared and credentialed to lead middle grades schools. The purpose of this research was to examine which states offered and/or required administrator credentials specific to middle grades and why states do or do not offer or require such credentialing. Analysis of the data indicates that states are moving away from specific credentialing for middle grades school administrators, with only one state still offering such a credential. Although state credentialing officers indicated the value of a specific middle grades principal credential, the need for flexibility for districts and credential candidates was the overarching reason for eliminating or not having a middle grades administrative credential. Moving away from specific middle grades credentialing has a number of implications for students, schools, preparations programs, and advocates of middle grades education
Ternary spreading and the ocp in copperbelt bemba
Bemba tonology has been described with respect to two prominent claims: H tone local spreading is binary, and is blocked by the OCP. These claims are based on Bemba, as spoken in Northern Zambia. This paper examines these two claims with respect to contemporary Bemba as it is spoken today in the Copperbelt province of Zambia. This paper shows that in Copperbelt Bemba (CB), these two aspects of H tone spreading are markedly different. In CB, local spreading is ternary, not binary, and a H will undergo binary spreading even if it causes an OCP violation. Ternary spread will be shown to follow from two rules: High Tone Doubling and Secondary High Doubling motivated by different constraints within CB tonology. In addition to documenting and describing the behavior of high tone in CB, a comparison to other cases of ternary spreading is also made
Nuclear re-organisation of the Hoxb complex during mouse embryonic development
The spatial and temporal co-linear expression of Hox genes during development is an exquisite example of programmed gene expression. The precise mechanisms underpinning this are not known. Analysis of Hoxb chromatin structure and nuclear organisation, during the differentiation of murine ES cells, has lent support to the idea that there is a progressive 'opening' of chromatin structure propagated through Hox clusters from 3'to 5', which contributes to the sequential activation of gene expression. Here, we show that similar events occur in vivo in at least two stages of development. The first changes in chromatin structure and nuclear organisation were detected during gastrulation in the Hoxb1-expressing posterior primitive streak region: Hoxb chromatin was decondensed and the Hoxb1 locus looped out from its chromosome territory, in contrast to non-expressing Hoxb9, which remained within the chromosome territory. At E9.5, when differential Hox expression along the anteroposterior axis is being established, we found concomitant changes in the organisation of Hoxb. Hoxb organisation differed between regions of the neural tube that had never expressed Hoxb [rhombomeres (r) 1 and 2], strongly expressed Hoxb1 but not b9 (r4), had downregulated Hoxb1 (r5), expressed Hoxb9 but not Hoxb1 (spinal cord), and expressed both genes (tail bud). We conclude that Hoxb chromatin decondensation and nuclear re-organisation is regulated in different parts of the developing embryo, and at different developmental stages. The differential nuclear organisation of Hoxb along the anteroposterior axis of the developing neural tube is coherent with co-linear Hox gene expression. In early development nuclear re-organisation is coupled to Hoxb expression, but does not anticipate it
Phrasal phonology in Copperbelt Bemba
Copperbelt Bemba exhibits several rightward spreading tonal processes which are sensitive to prosodic phrase structure. The rightmost H tone in a word will undergo unbounded spreading if the word is final in a phonological phrase (phi). In an intonational phrase consisting of several single-word phi's, the rightmost H in the first word will spread through all following toneless phi's. From a rule-based perspective, this can only be accounted for by positing mutually feeding iterative rules, as a single H-tone spreading rule cannot account for the long-distance spreading. Rather, a second rule that spreads a H from the final mora of one word onto the initial mora of the following word is required, as a bridge to further unbounded spreading. Three phrase-sensitive OT constraints are proposed to account for H-tone spreading between words. One is of the domain-juncture variety, requiring the specification of two separate prosodic domains
An End-to-End Conversational Style Matching Agent
We present an end-to-end voice-based conversational agent that is able to
engage in naturalistic multi-turn dialogue and align with the interlocutor's
conversational style. The system uses a series of deep neural network
components for speech recognition, dialogue generation, prosodic analysis and
speech synthesis to generate language and prosodic expression with qualities
that match those of the user. We conducted a user study (N=30) in which
participants talked with the agent for 15 to 20 minutes, resulting in over 8
hours of natural interaction data. Users with high consideration conversational
styles reported the agent to be more trustworthy when it matched their
conversational style. Whereas, users with high involvement conversational
styles were indifferent. Finally, we provide design guidelines for multi-turn
dialogue interactions using conversational style adaptation
Molecular cytotaxonomy of primates by chromosomal in situ suppression hybridization
A new strategy for analyzing chromosomal evolution in primates is presented using chromosomal in situ suppression (CISS) hybridization. Biotin-labeled DNA libraries from flow-sorted human chromosomes are hybridized to chromosome preparations of catarrhines, platyrrhines, and prosimians. By this approach rearrangements of chromosomes that occurred during hominoid evolution are visualized directly at the level of DNA sequences, even in primate species with pronounced chromosomal shuffles
H4K16 acetylation marks active genes and enhancers of embryonic stem cells, but does not alter chromatin compaction
Compared with histone H3, acetylation of H4 tails has not been well studied, especially in mammalian cells. Yet, H4K16 acetylation is of particular interest because of its ability to decompact nucleosomes in vitro and its involvement in dosage compensation in flies. Here we show that, surprisingly, loss of H4K16 acetylation does not alter higher-order chromatin compaction in vivo in mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs). As well as peaks of acetylated H4K16 and KAT8 histone acetyltransferase at the transcription start sites of expressed genes, we report that acetylation of H4K16 is a new marker of active enhancers in ESCs and that some enhancers are marked by H3K4me1, KAT8, and H4K16ac, but not by acetylated H3K27 or EP300, suggesting that they are novel EP300 independent regulatory elements. Our data suggest a broad role for different histone acetylation marks and for different histone acetyltransferases in long-range gene regulation.</jats:p
