    Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays

    The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns

    Extracciones dentarias en pacientes en tratamiento con anticoagulantes: revisión de la literatura

    Objetivo del trabajo. En pacientes en terapia con anticoagulantes orales, una simple extracción puede provocar hemorragias importantes. En la literatura se describen dos enfoques terapéuticos en casos de intervenciones quirúrgicas en esta categoría de pacientes. Uno propone la reducción de la dosis terapéutica del fármaco, mientras que el segundo sugiere la sustitución con heparina. El objetivo de este trabajo es revisar la literatura que trata este tema con el fin de obtener un protocolo ideal. Conclusiones. En caso de extracciones simples es suficiente usar anestesia con vasoconstrictor (en el caso de que no haya otras contraindicaciones), realizar suturas bien tensadas, aplicar coadyuvantes hemostáticos locales y ácido tranexámico tópico. Solo en casos de intervenciones más complejas, o con valores de INR mayores a 3,5, será necesario reducir la dosis del fármaco y consecuente sustitución con heparina de acuerdo a las instrucciones del hematólogo y del cardiólogo. Aim of the work. In patients treated with oral anticoagulants, even simple tooth extractions can produce large hemorrhages. There are two main therapeutic outlines suggested in literature in case of little oral surgery. The first one is based on the reduction of the therapeutic dose of the drug, and the second one on the substitution with heparin. The aim of this paper was to review the.literature on the management of patients treated with anticoagulants in order to obtain univocal guidelines. Conclusion. In case of simple tooth extractions generally a vasoconstrictive anaesthetic (if there are no other contraindications), tight sutures, the application of hemostats and tronexamic acid are enough. Only in case of more complex surgery or of INR values higher than 3,5 it is necessory to reduce the anticoagulant dose or to change the therapy with heparin, if agreed by the hoemotologist and/ or the cardiologist

    Performance and Operation of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter

    The operation and general performance of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter using cosmic-ray muons are described. These muons were recorded after the closure of the CMS detector in late 2008. The calorimeter is made of lead tungstate crystals and the overall status of the 75848 channels corresponding to the barrel and endcap detectors is reported. The stability of crucial operational parameters, such as high voltage, temperature and electronic noise, is summarised and the performance of the light monitoring system is presented

    Influence of masticatory function on food preferences and cognitive performance in centenarians: an observational study

    Introduction: Demographic projections forecast that centenarians’ population growth will continue. “CaT: Centenari a Trieste” is an ongoing study featuring the collection of demographic and anamnestic data, including the analysis of oral variables. Aims: evaluate of the possible influence of past food preferences, taste perception and masticatory function on current cognitive status in a cohort of centenarians. Design: Observational transversal study. Materials and Methods: 31 participants with mean age 102 ± 2 performed an examination of the oral cavity including the measurement of DMFT (Decayed Missing Filled Teeth), FTUs (functional teeth units), FOUs (functional occlusal units) and 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) taste perception assay. Results were correlated with dementia, subjective perception of oral health and food preferences. Results: Masticatory function did not correlate with dementia but had a significant impact on oral health perception. When analyzing variables affecting food preferences, PROP taste perception profile and DMFT resulted significantly correlated. Early edentulism didn’t show to affect past dietary preferences. Conclusions: our data suggest that in centenarians masticatory function doesn’t seem to correlate to cognitive function, but influences the self-perception of oral health. Such results are an interesting addition to knowledge on the topic as they refer to a population which has never been considered before

    Effects of Oral Topical Capsaicin Gel on Taste Perception in Healthy Subjects: A Pilot Study

    Objectives: Topical capsaicin is widely used for managing peripheral neuropathies; however, its impact on gustatory perception following prolonged oral use remains unclear. This pilot study aimed to evaluate changes in gustatory sensitivity and food preferences induced by capsaicin topical gel therapy in healthy individuals. Materials and Methods: Ten healthy female subjects applied capsaicin gel (0.025%) to the gingival mucosa twice daily for 14 days. Evaluations were conducted at baseline (T0), after 2 weeks (T1), after 4 weeks (T2), and after 4 weeks following discontinuation (T3). A matched control group underwent identical assessment without capsaicin application. Gustatory changes were measured using a modified taste strip method and a food preferences questionnaire. Results: While subjective alterations in food perception, liking, and preferences were reported in the capsaicin group, no significant objective changes in gustatory perception (intensity and recognition of salty, sweet, sour, and bitter flavors) were observed. Subjective changes were reversible upon cessation of capsaicin use. Conclusions: Topical capsaicin gel influences subjective food perception and preferences without objectively altering gustatory function. These findings highlight the importance of considering such effects when prescribing capsaicin for oral somatosensory disorders, such as burning mouth syndrome or dysgeusia
