    Twin roll casting and melt conditioned twin-roll casting of magnesium alloys

    Recently, BCAST at Brunel University has developed a MCAST (melt conditioning by advanced shear technology) process for conditioning liquid metal at temperature either above or bellow the alloy liquidus using a high shear twin-screw mechanism. The MCAST process has now been combined with the twin roll casting (TRC) process to form an innovative technology, namely, the melt conditioned twin roll casting (MC-TRC) process for casting Al-alloy and Mg-alloy strips. During the MC-TRC process, liquid alloy with a specified temperature is continuously fed into the MCAST machine. By intensive shearing under the high shear rate and high intensity of turbulence, the liquid is transformed into conditioned melt with uniform temperature and composition throughout the whole volume. The conditioned melt is then fed continuously into the twin-roll caster for strip production. The experimental results show that the AZ91D MC-TRC strips with different thicknesses have fine and uniform microstructure. The strip consists of equiaxed grains with a mean size of 60-70μm. The strip displays extremely uniform grain size and composition throughout the whole cross-section. Investigation also shows that both TRC and MC-TRC processes with reduced deformation are effective to reduce the formation of defects, particularly the formation of the central line segregations

    The σHβ\sigma_{\rm H\beta}-based dimensionless accretion rate and its connection with the corona for AGN

    With respect to the Hβ\rm H\beta full width at half-maximum (FWHMHβ\rm FWHM_{H\beta}), the broad Hβ\rm H\beta line dispersion (σHβ\sigma_{\rm H\beta}) was preferred as a velocity tracer to calculate the single-epoch supermassive black hole mass (MBHM_{\rm BH}) suggested by \cite{Yu2020b}. For a compiled sample of 311 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGN) with measured hard X-ray photon index (z<0.7z<0.7), σHβ\sigma_{\rm H\beta} and the optical Fe II relative strength (RFeR_{\rm Fe}) are measured from their optical spectra, which are used to calculate σHβ\sigma_{\rm H\beta}-based virial MBHM_{\rm BH} and dimensionless accretion rate (M˙\dot{\mathscr{M}}). With respect to FWHMHβ\rm FWHM_{\rm H\beta}, it is found that the mean value of σHβ\sigma_{\rm H\beta}-based MBHM_{\rm BH} is on average larger by 0.26 dex, and the mean value of σHβ\sigma_{\rm H\beta}-based M˙\dot{\mathscr{M}} is on average smaller by 0.51 dex. It is found that there exists a non-linear relationship between the Eddington ratio (LBol/LEddL_{\rm Bol}/L_{\rm Edd}) and M˙\dot{\mathscr{M}}, i.e., LBol/LEddM˙0.56±0.01L_{\rm Bol}/L_{\rm Edd} \propto \dot{\mathscr{M}}^{0.56\pm 0.01}. This non-linear relationship comes from the accretion efficiency η\eta, which is smaller for AGN with higher M˙\dot{\mathscr{M}}. We find a strong bivariate correlation of the fraction of energy released in the corona FXF_{\rm X} with M˙\dot{\mathscr{M}} and \mbh, FXM˙0.57±0.05MBH0.54±0.06F_{\rm X} \propto \dot{\mathscr{M}}^{-0.57\pm 0.05} M_{\rm BH}^{-0.54\pm 0.06}. The flat slope of 0.57±0.05-0.57\pm 0.05 favours the shear stress tensor of the accretion disk being proportional to the geometric mean of gas pressure and total pressure. We find a strong bivariate relation of Γ\Gamma with M˙\dot{\mathscr{M}} and FXF_{\rm X}, ΓM˙0.21±0.02FX0.02±0.04\Gamma \propto \dot{\mathscr{M}}^{-0.21\pm 0.02}F_{\rm X}^{0.02\pm 0.04}.     Termination of Cryogenian ironstone deposition by deep ocean euxinia

    Widespread deposition of iron-rich sedimentary rocks (ironstones) occurred during the Sturtian ice age, the earlier of two Cryogenian ‘Snowball Earth’ glaciations. However, the reasons for the termination of Cryogenian Iron Formation (CIF) deposition remain poorly understood. Here we report a multi-isotope (Fe-C-S) study of the Xinyu CIF in South China that can directly address this question. The isotopic compositions of these multivalent elements exhibit remarkable covariance at the top of the Xinyu CIF that reflects progressive redox stratification during iron oxide deposition. Iron oxide deposition ended abruptly due to the titration of ferrous iron as pyrite following a large influx of riverine sulfate. Although termination of CIF deposition is commonly attributed to oxygenation, our data show that at least in some Cryogenian ocean basins, CIF deposition ended with the spread of euxinic rather than oxygenated waters

    The Host Galaxy and Central Engine of the Dwarf AGN POX 52

    We present new multi-wavelength observations of the dwarf Seyfert 1 galaxy POX 52 in order to investigate the properties of the host galaxy and the active nucleus, and to examine the mass of its black hole, previously estimated to be ~ 10^5 M_sun. Hubble Space Telescope ACS/HRC images show that the host galaxy has a dwarf elliptical morphology (M_I = -18.4 mag, Sersic index n = 4.3) with no detected disk component or spiral structure, confirming previous results from ground-based imaging. X-ray observations from both Chandra and XMM show strong (factor of 2) variability over timescales as short as 500 s, as well as a dramatic decrease in the absorbing column density over a 9 month period. We attribute this change to a partial covering absorber, with a 94% covering fraction and N_H = 58^{+8.4}_{-9.2} * 10^21 cm^-2, that moved out of the line of sight in between the XMM and Chandra observations. Combining these data with observations from the VLA, Spitzer, and archival data from 2MASS and GALEX, we examine the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the active nucleus. Its shape is broadly similar to typical radio-quiet quasar SEDs, despite the very low bolometric luminosity of L_bol = 1.3 * 10^43 ergs/s. Finally, we compare black hole mass estimators including methods based on X-ray variability, and optical scaling relations using the broad H-beta line width and AGN continuum luminosity, finding a range of black hole mass from all methods to be M_bh = (2.2-4.2) * 10^5 M_sun, with an Eddington ratio of L_bol/L_edd = 0.2-0.5.Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    The current UK Government’s focus on the development of services to manage and support offenders with mental health problems has resulted in a number of innovative project developments. This research examines a service development in the North East of England which co-located Mental Health nurses with two Integrated Offender Management teams. While not solving all problems, the benefits of co-location were clear – although such innovations are now at risk from government changes which will make Integrated Offender Management the responsibility of new providers without compelling them to co-operate with health services

    SDSS J143030.22-001115.1: A misclassified narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy with flat X-ray spectrum

    We used multi-component profiles to model Hβ\beta and [O III]λλ\lambda \lambda 4959,5007 lines for SDSS J143030.22-001115.1, a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) in a sample of 150 NLS1s candidates selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Early Data Release (EDR). After subtracting the Hβ\beta contribution from narrow line regions (NLRs), we found that its full width half maximum (FWHM) of broad Hβ\beta line is nearly 2900 \kms, significantly larger than the customarily adopted criterion of 2000 \kms. With its weak Fe II multiples, we think that SDSS J143030.22-001115.1 can't be classified as a genuine NLS1. When we calculate the virial black hole masses of NLS1s, we should use the Hβ\beta linewidth after subtracting the Hβ\beta contribution from NLRs.Comment: 7 pages, 1 table, accepted by ChJA
