Enhanced Hardware Security Using Charge-Based Emerging Device Technology
The emergence of hardware Trojans has largely reshaped the traditional view that the hardware layer can be blindly trusted. Hardware Trojans, which are often in the form of maliciously inserted circuitry, may impact the original design by data leakage or circuit malfunction. Hardware counterfeiting and IP piracy are another two serious issues costing the US economy more than $200 billion annually. A large amount of research and experimentation has been carried out on the design of these primitives based on the currently prevailing CMOS technology. However, the security provided by these primitives comes at the cost of large overheads mostly in terms of area and power consumption. The development of emerging technologies provides hardware security researchers with opportunities to utilize some of the otherwise unusable properties of emerging technologies in security applications. In this dissertation, we will include the security consideration in the overall performance measurements to fully compare the emerging devices with CMOS technology. The first approach is to leverage two emerging devices (Silicon NanoWire and Graphene SymFET) for hardware security applications. Experimental results indicate that emerging device based solutions can provide high level circuit protection with relatively lower performance overhead compared to conventional CMOS counterpart. The second topic is to construct an energy-efficient DPA-resilient block cipher with ultra low-power Tunnel FET. Current-mode logic is adopted as a circuit-level solution to countermeasure differential power analysis attack, which is mostly used in the cryptographic system. The third investigation targets on potential security vulnerability of foundry insider\u27s attack. Split manufacturing is adopted for the protection on radio-frequency (RF) circuit design
Split degenerate states and stable p+ip phases from holography
In this paper, we investigate the p+p superfluid phases in the complex
vector field holographic p-wave model. We find that in the probe limit, the
p+p phase and the p-wave phase are equally stable, hence the p and p
orders can be mixed with an arbitrary ratio to form more general p+p
phases, which are also equally stable with the p-wave and p+p phases. As a
result, the system possesses a degenerate thermal state in the superfluid
region. We further study the case with considering the back reaction on the
metric, and find that the degenerate ground states will be separated into
p-wave and p+p phases, and the p-wave phase is more stable. Finally, due to
the different critical temperature of the zeroth order phase transitions from
p-wave and p+p phases to the normal phase, there is a temperature region
where the p+p phase exists but the p-wave phase doesn't. In this region we

Views of Genetic Counselors on the Use of PGD for Social Sex Selection Purposes
Preimplanatation genetic diagnosis (PGD) allows genetic information to be tested after an egg is fertilized in vitro before implantation into the uterus. The technology was first used to select for embryos at risk for X-linked diseases, however it has been observed that prospective parents are using this technology to select for the sex of their child based on preference. This study aims to examine the views of genetic counselors towards the use of PGD for social sex selection purposes. A survey was conducted using the online website survey monkey’s platform and sent to members of the National Society of Genetic Counselors through their eblast. A majority of the respondents expressed that they were worried about the potential future of sex selection leading more offensive types of trait selection, and they feel that the use of reproductive technology to select trait is likely to become more commonplace over time. They showed discomfort in counseling patients about social sex selection regardless of the patient’s age, ethnicity, or reasons such as family balancing. Genetic counselors did not support termination of pregnancy for sex selection purposes, but felt strongly in the right of the patient to terminate a pregnancy regardless of the reason. Genetic counselors are concerned about their role in the current practice regarding social sex selection. 1.They have conflicting views that on one hand, they do not support pregnancy termination for social sex selection purposes, but on the other hand, they believe the right of the patient in terminating a pregnancy for any reason. The result of this study suggests that perhaps a formal discussion should take place to explore the role of genetic counselors in this emerging area of patient service
Resistance status of the carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus and the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae to selected acaricides on strawberries.
The carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval) and the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, are serious pests of strawberries and many other horticultural crops. Control of these pests has been heavily dependent upon chemical acaricides. Objectives of this study were to determine the resistance status of these two pest species to commonly used acaricides on strawberries in a year-round intensive horticultural production region. LC90 of abamectin for adult carmine spider mites was 4% whereas that for adult twospotted spider mites was 24% of the top label rate. LC90s of spiromesifen, etoxazole, hexythiazox and bifenazate were 0.5%, 0.5%, 1.4% and 83% of their respective highest label rates for carmine spider mite eggs, 0.7%, 2.7%, 12.1% and 347% of their respective highest label rates for the nymphs. LC90s of spiromesifen, etoxazole, hexythiazox and bifenazate were 4.6%, 11.1%, 310% and 62% of their respective highest label rates for twospotted spider mite eggs, 3%, 13%, 432,214% and 15% of their respective highest label rates for the nymphs. Our results suggest that T. cinnabarinus have developed resistance to bifenazate and that the T. urticae have developed resistance to hexythiazox. These results strongly emphasize the need to develop resistance management strategies in the region
