    Development of a laser based inspection system for surface defect detection

    The objective of this project was to design and develop a laser based inspection system for the detection of surface defects and to assess its potentiality for high-speed online applications. The basic components of this inspection system are a laser diode module as illumination source, a random access CMOS camera as detector unit, and an XYZ translation stage. Algorithms were developed to analyze the data obtained from the scanning of different sample surfaces. The inspection system was based on optical triangulation principle. The laser beam was incident obliquely to the sample surface. Differences in surface height were then detected as a horizontal shift of the laser spot on the sample surface. This enabled height measurements to be taken, as per the triangulation method. The developed inspection system was first calibrated in order to obtain a conversion factor that would render a relationship between the measured spot shift on the sensor and the vertical displacement of the surface. Experiments were carried out on different sample material surfaces: brass, aluminum <ind stainless steel. The developed system is able to accurately generate three-dimensional topographic maps of the defects presented to it in this work. A spatial resolution of approximately 70 pm and a depth resolution of 60 pm were achieved.     Consumer Online Brand Trust and Determinants in Qatar

    The paper theorizes and examines consumer online brand trust (COBT) and its salient determinants in Qatar in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. Results from a sample of 178 respondents in Qatar indicate consumer online brand familiarity, consumer satisfaction with the online brand and website, word-of-mouth communications between online consumers and information on the online brand are positively related to COBT, whilst web design of the brand's website and is not. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed

    Refractive femtosecond laser beam shaping for two-photon polymerization

    Three dimensional microstructure fabrication by two-photon polymerization is an established technique that normally uses single beam serial writing. Recently the use of a micro-optical element, to give multipoint beam delivery, was reported to give a degree of parallel processing. The authors describe an alternative approach to parallel processing using an axicon lens. This is a refractive element that, in combination with a high power microscope objective, efficiently transforms the laser beam from a Gaussian spot to an annulus. The authors demonstrate that the beam can polymerize a three dimensional shape, with nanoscale resolution. The use of more sophisticated refractive beam shaping is also discussed.     Automated Level Crossing System: A Computer Vision Based Approach with Raspberry Pi Microcontroller

    In a rapidly flourishing country like Bangladesh, accidents in unmanned level crossings are increasing daily. This study presents a deep learning-based approach for automating level crossing junctions, ensuring maximum safety. Here, we develop a fully automated technique using computer vision on a microcontroller that will reduce and eliminate level-crossing deaths and accidents. A Raspberry Pi microcontroller detects impending trains using computer vision on live video, and the intersection is closed until the incoming train passes unimpeded. Live video activity recognition and object detection algorithms scan the junction 24/7. Self-regulating microcontrollers control the entire process. When persistent unauthorized activity is identified, authorities, such as police and fire brigade, are notified via automated messages and notifications. The microcontroller evaluates live rail-track data, and arrival and departure times to anticipate ETAs, train position, velocity, and track problems to avoid head-on collisions. This proposed scheme reduces level crossing accidents and fatalities at a lower cost than current market solutions.     Managing in an economic crisis: The role of market orientation in an international law firm

    This research paper contributes to the understanding of the relationship between market orientation and performance in the context of a law firm during a time of economic crisis. The contribution is twofold, adding to the fairly limited research on market orientation within law firms, and to the limited research on the role of market orientation in times of economic crisis. The findings, from the questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews within practice groups of a large multinational law firm, conclude that market orientation is important during an economic crisis. Those practice groups with higher market orientation scores withstand the increased turbulence and outperform those practice groups with lower market orientation scores

    Developing a high-resolution gridded rainfall product for Bangladesh during 1901–2018

    A high-resolution (1 km × 1 km) monthly gridded rainfall data product during 1901–2018, named Bangladesh Gridded Rainfall (BDGR), was developed in this study. In-situ rainfall observations retrieved from a number of sources, including national organizations and undigitized data from the colonial era, were used. Leave-one-out cross-validation was used to assess product’s ability to capture spatial and temporal variability. The results revealed spatial variability of the percentage bias (PBIAS) in the range of −2 to 2%, normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) 0.88 at most of the locations. The temporal variability in mean PBIAS for 1901–2018 was in the range of −4.5 to 4.3%, NRMSE between 9 and 19% and R-square in the range of 0.87 to 0.95. The BDGR also showed its capability in replicating temporal patterns and trends of observed rainfall with greater accuracy. The product can provide reliable insights regarding various hydrometeorological issues, including historical floods, droughts, and groundwater recharge for a well-recognized global climate hotspot, Bangladesh

    Exploring interaction differences in Microblogging Word of Mouth between entrepreneurial and conventional service providers

    In this study, we explore the interaction network properties of Microblogging Word of Mouth (MWOM), and how it is utilized by two different types of service providers, namely entrepreneurial and conventional. We use social network analysis, involving network metrics, sentiment, content and semantic analysis of real time data collected via Twitter, to compare two providers in terms of how they leverage MWOM in their social interactions. Results demonstrate that MWOM is utilized in an inherently different manner by an entrepreneurial provider, compared to a conventional one. Based on the findings, the study identifies distinctions between the entrepreneurial and conventional service providers in how they utilize MWOM on social media. Specifically, the entrepreneurial provider capitalizes on the interactive nature and dialogic capabilities of Twitter; whereas the conventional provider mostly relies on focal information sharing, thus neglecting the network members’ content creation and relationship building capability of social media networks. The study has significant implications as it provides key insights and lessons in terms of how companies should respond to emerging digital opportunities in their online social interactions

    Factors enhancing the choice of higher resource commitment entry modes in international new ventures

    The choice of entry mode in foreign markets is an important strategic decision with major consequences for the success of international new ventures (INVs). It is generally accepted that these firms choose relatively low-resource commitment entry modes to operate in foreign markets. Nevertheless, some researchers have suggested that higher resource commitment entry modes in foreign markets also seem to be competitive strategies for INVs. In this study, from a marketing/international entrepreneurship interface perspective and focusing on organizational issues, we center our attention on international market orientation as a neglected yet important factor in INVs’ choice of higher resource commitment entry modes in foreign markets. We suggest that an entrepreneurial orientation and the timing of international entry are important correlates to an international market orientation. We also suggest that the international learning effort of INVs through their international market orientation has a direct, positive impact on the resources these companies commit to their foreign markets through the use of higher resource commitment entry modes. Accordingly, the model proposes a positive effect of entrepreneurial orientation and early international entry on international market orientation which, in turn, is positively related to higher resource commitment entry modes. The hypotheses were tested on country-level data from Spain, using a structural equation model to analyze relationships between the latent variables. This study extends previous international entrepreneurship research, including insights on antecedents of international new ventures’ choice of resource commitment entry modes in foreign markets. The paper also goes further than previous international entrepreneurship research, by addressing the strategic consequences of rapid entry into foreign markets. Additionally, the results of this work encourage international entrepreneurs to look beyond the explicit value of experiential market knowledge to realize the potential value of international market orientation as an antecedent to higher resource commitment entry modes
