Buckling Analysis of Embedded Nanosize FG Beams Based on a Refined Hyperbolic Shear Deformation Theory

In this study, the mechanical buckling response of refined hyperbolic shear deformable (FG) functionally graded nanobeams embedded in an elastic foundation is investigated based on the refined hyperbolic shear deformation theory. Material properties of the FG nanobeam change continuously in the thickness direction based on the power-law model. To capture small size effects, Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory is adopted. Employing Hamilton’s principle, the nonlocal governing equations of FG nanobeams embedded in the elastic foundation are obtained. To predict the buckling behavior of embedded FG nanobeams, the Navier-type analytical solution is applied to solve the governing equations. Numerical results demonstrate the influences of various parameters such as elastic foundation, power-law index, nonlocal parameter, and slenderness ratio on the critical buckling loads of size dependent FG nanobeams

A new inverse trigonometric shear deformation theory for isotropic and functionally graded sandwich plates

A new inverse trigonometric shear deformation theory is proposed for the static, buckling and free vibration analyses of isotropic and functionally graded (FG) sandwich plates. It accounts for a inverse trigonometric distribution of transverse shear stress and satisfies the traction free boundary conditions. Equations of motion obtained here are solved for three types of FG plates: FG plates, sandwich plates with FG core and sandwich plates with FG faces. Closed-form solutions are obtained to predict the deflections, stresses, critical buckling loads and natural frequencies of simply supported plates. A good agreement between the obtained predictions and the available solutions of existing shear deformation theories is found to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed theory

    Soil reinforcement with geosynthetics

    No full text
The proportionality of existence of land with good bearing to erect any building or building is very small, to remedy this deficiency it is necessary to resort to techniques of reinforcement of the soils which can constitute a very important development. Among these methods of remediation, there is reinforcement by the geosynthetics which constitute an effective solution to these constraints. This process tends to stabilize the soil in question with increased load bearing capacity in civil engineering and geotechnical works such as embankments, slopes, embankments and hydraulic structures, with an inestimable gain in time, economy and durability while preserving the natural and environmental aspect

Effect of quick lime on physicochemical properties of clay soil

Clay soils are known for their water sensitivity, which causes irreparable damage to any structure built on this type of soil. In order to avoid such problem, it is necessary to use various improvement and stabilization methods such as treatment with lime. This process has been used successfully in the field for decades. The addition of lime generates various physicochemical reactions within the soil such as cation exchange and pozzolanic reactions which are largely responsible for the improvement of the soil in question. This paper presents a study concerning the variation of physicochemical properties of clayey soil with the addition of quicklime at different percentages. Experiments were performed on two clayey soils (CL type) in order to investigate the influence of quicklime on Atterberg limits and pH. These tests were carried out in an attempt to study and follow the development and progression of various reactions occurred within the soil with various lime percentages. The results show that the addition of quicklime causes a significant improvement in soil properties by reducing plasticity and thereby improves the soil workability. It can also be found that the addition of lime increase pH of soil, which allow activating pozzolanic reactions who tend to stabilize the soil in question by formation of cementitious compounds. Finally, the pH can be considered as a relevant parameter who allows a better understanding of the reactions that occur in the soil matrix
