    Quantum dots in graphene

We suggest a way of confining quasiparticles by an external potential in a small region of a graphene strip. Transversal electron motion plays a crucial role in this confinement. Properties of thus obtained graphene quantum dots are investigated theoretically for different types of the boundary conditions at the edges of the strip. The (quasi)bound states exist in all systems considered. At the same time, the dependence of the conductance on the gate voltage carries an information about the shape of the edges.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Spectral Statistics and Dynamical Localization: sharp transition in a generalized Sinai billiard

We consider a Sinai billiard where the usual hard disk scatterer is replaced by a repulsive potential with V(r)∼λr−αV(r)\sim\lambda r^{-\alpha} close to the origin. Using periodic orbit theory and numerical evidence we show that its spectral statistics tends to Poisson statistics for large energies when α2\alpha2, while for α=2\alpha=2 it is independent of energy, but depends on λ\lambda. We apply the approach of Altshuler and Levitov [Phys. Rep. {\bf 288}, 487 (1997)] to show that the transition in the spectral statistics is accompanied by a dynamical localization-delocalization transition. This behaviour is reminiscent of a metal-insulator transition in disordered electronic systems.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let

Deviations from Berry--Robnik Distribution Caused by Spectral Accumulation

By extending the Berry--Robnik approach for the nearly integrable quantum systems,\cite{[1]} we propose one possible scenario of the energy level spacing distribution that deviates from the Berry--Robnik distribution. The result described in this paper implies that deviations from the Berry--Robnik distribution would arise when energy level components show strong accumulation, and otherwise, the level spacing distribution agrees with the Berry--Robnik distribution.Comment: 4 page

Intensity Fluctuations in Closed and Open Systems

We consider the intensity pattern, generated by a monochromatic source, in a disordered cavity coupled to the environment. For weak coupling, and when the source frequency is tuned to a resonance, the intensity distribution is close to Porter-Thomas distribution. When the coupling increases, gradually crosses over to the Rayleigh distribution. The joint probability distribution for intensities at two different points is also discussed.Comment: 11 pages, LATEX, no figure

Long-range correlations in the wave functions of chaotic systems

We study correlations of the amplitudes of wave functions of a chaotic system at large distances. For this purpose, a joint distribution function of the amplitudes at two distant points in a sample is calculated analytically using the supersymmetry technique. The result shows that, although in the limit of the orthogonal and unitary symmetry classes the correlations vanish, they are finite through the entire crossover regime and may be reduced only by localization effects.Comment: 4 pages RevTex + 2 fig

Phase--coherence Effects in Antidot Lattices: A Semiclassical Approach to Bulk Conductivity

We derive semiclassical expressions for the Kubo conductivity tensor. Within our approach the oscillatory parts of the diagonal and Hall conductivity are given as sums over contributions from classical periodic orbits in close relation to Gutzwiller's trace formula for the density of states. Taking into account the effects of weak disorder and temperature we reproduce recently observed anomalous phase coherence oscillations in the conductivity of large antidot arrays.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures available under request, RevTe

Single-mode approximation and effective Chern-Simons theories for quantum Hall systems

A unified description of elementary and collective excitations in quantum Hall systems is presented within the single-mode approximation (SMA) framework, with emphasis on revealing an intimate link with Chern-Simons theories. It is shown that for a wide class of quantum Hall systems the SMA in general yields, as an effective theory, a variant of the bosonic Chern-Simons theory. For single-layer systems the effective theory agrees with the standard Chern-Simons theory at long wavelengths whereas substantial deviations arise for collective excitations in bilayer systems. It is suggested, in particular, that Hall-drag experiments would be a good place to detect out-of-phase collective excitations inherent to bilayer systems. It is also shown that the intra-Landau-level modes bear a similarity in structure (though not in scale) to the inter-Landau-level modes, and its implications on the composite-fermion and composite-boson theories are discussed.Comment: 9 pages, Revtex
