Examines existing and currently anticipated infrastructure, rising gas prices, and recurring supply problems, and looks at options to alleviate the problem. Part of a series of research reports that examines energy issues facing California

Comments on the Relativity of Shape

In this talk I address three topics related to the shape of hadrons: 1. The Lorentz contraction of bound states. Few dedicated studies of this exist - I describe a recent calculation for ordinary atoms (positronium). 2. Does the A-dependence of nuclear structure functions indicate a change of proton shape in the nuclear environment? (My short answer is no.) 3. The size of Fock states contributing to processes involving large momentum transfers. End-point configurations can be transversally extended and yet sufficiently short-lived to contribute coherently to hard scattering.Comment: Talk at the Workshop on the Shape of Hadrons, 27-29 April 2006 in Athens, Greece. 11 pages, 15 figure

Weightier Than a Mountain : Duty, Hierarchy, and the Consumer in Japan

The authors analyze the 1994 Japanese products liability law from a national-culture perspective. After examining the historical backdrop of the consumer\u27s social role in both the United States and Japan, the authors argue that the new law cannot create a strict liability system like that of the United States in Japan, because the unique Japanese cultural context and its manipulation discourage the use of the legal process to advance consumer interests

Simplifying knowledge creation and access for end-users on the SW

In this position paper, we argue that improved mechanisms for knowledge acquisition and access on the semantic web (SW) will be necessary before it will be adopted widely by end-users. In particular, we propose an investigation surrounding improved languages for knowledge exchange, better UI mechanisms for interaction, and potential help from user modeling to enable accurate, efficient, SW knowledge modeling for everyone
