Metastable states, the adiabatic theorem and parity violating geometric phases II
We discuss and calculate parity conserving (PC) and parity violating (PV)
geometric phases for the metastable 2S states of hydrogen and deuterium. The
atoms are supposed to be subjected to slowly varying electric and magnetic
fields which act as external parameters for the atoms. Geometric flux density
fields are introduced which allow for an easy overview how to choose the paths
in parameter space in order to obtain only PC or only PV geometric phases. The
PV phases are calculated in the Standard Model of particle physics. Even if
numerically they come out small they have interest of principle as a new
manifestation of parity violation in atomic physics.Comment: 63 pages, 8 figures, 10 table
Oscillations of the magnetic polarization in a Kondo impurity at finite magnetic fields
The electronic properties of a Kondo impurity are investigated in a magnetic
field using linear response theory. The distribution of electrical charge and
magnetic polarization are calculated in real space. The (small) magnetic field
does not change the charge distribution. However, it unmasks the Kondo cloud.
The (equal) weight of the d-electron components with their magnetic moment up
and down is shifted and the compensating s-electron clouds don't cancel any
longer (a requirement for an experimental detection of the Kondo cloud). In
addition to the net magnetic polarization of the conduction electrons an
oscillating magnetic polarization with a period of half the Fermi wave length
is observed. However, this oscillating magnetic polarization does not show the
long range behavior of Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida oscillations because the
oscillations don't extend beyond the Kondo radius. They represent an internal
electronic structure of the Kondo impurity in a magnetic field. PACS: 75.20.Hr,

Cosmic String Wakes in Scalar-Tensor Gravities
The formation and evolution of cosmic string wakes in the framework of a
scalar-tensor gravity are investigated in this work. We consider a simple model
in which cold dark matter flows past an ordinary string and we treat this
motion in the Zel'dovich approximation. We make a comaprison between our
results and previous results obtained in the context of General Relativity. We
propose a mechanism in which the contribution of the scalar field to the
evolution of the wakes may lead to a cosmological observation.Comment: Replaced version to be published in the Classical and Quantum Gravit
Lepton number violating interactions and their effects on neutrino oscillation experiments
Mixing between bosons that transform differently under the standard model
gauge group, but identically under its unbroken subgroup, can induce
interactions that violate the total lepton number. We discuss four-fermion
operators that mediate lepton number violating neutrino interactions both in a
model-independent framework and within supersymmetry (SUSY) without R-parity.
The effective couplings of such operators are constrained by: i) the upper
bounds on the relevant elementary couplings between the bosons and the
fermions, ii) by the limit on universality violation in pion decays, iii) by
the data on neutrinoless double beta decay and, iv) by loop-induced neutrino
masses. We find that the present bounds imply that lepton number violating
neutrino interactions are not relevant for the solar and atmospheric neutrino
problems. Within SUSY without R-parity also the LSND anomaly cannot be
explained by such interactions, but one cannot rule out an effect
model-independently. Possible consequences for future terrestrial neutrino
oscillation experiments and for neutrinos from a supernova are discussed.Comment: 28 pages, 2 figures, Late
A Search for "Dwarf" Seyfert Nuclei. III. Spectroscopic Parameters and Properties of the Host Galaxies
We have completed an optical spectroscopic survey of the nuclear regions (r <
200 pc) of a large sample of nearby galaxies. Although the main objectives of
the survey are to search for low-luminosity active galactic nuclei and to
quantify their luminosity function, the database can be used for a variety of
other purposes. This paper presents measurements of the spectroscopic
parameters for the 418 emission-line nuclei, along with a compilation of the
global properties of all 486 galaxies in the survey. Stellar absorption
generally poses a serious obstacle to obtaining accurate measurement of
emission lines in nearby galactic nuclei. We describe a procedure for removing
the starlight from the observed spectra in an efficient and objective manner.
The main parameters of the emission lines (intensity ratios, fluxes, profile
widths, equivalent widths) are measured and tabulated, as are several stellar
absorption-line and continuum indices useful for studying the stellar
population. Using standard nebular diagnostics, we determine the probable
ionization mechanisms of the emission-line objects. The resulting spectral
classifications provide extensive information on the demographics of
emission-line nuclei in the local universe. This new catalog contains over 200
objects showing spectroscopic evidence for recent star formation and an equally
large number of active galactic nuclei, including 46 which show broad H-alpha
emission. These samples will serve as the basis of future studies of nuclear
activity in nearby galaxies.Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal Supplements. LaTex, 31 pages,

X-ray Raman scattering study of aligned polyfluorene
We present a non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study at the carbon
K-edge on aligned poly[9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-fluorene-2,7-diyl] and show that
the x-ray Raman scattering technique can be used as a practical alternative to
x-ray absorption measurements. We demonstrate that this novel method can be
applied to studies on aligned -conjugated polymers complementing
diffraction and optical studies. Combining the experimental data and a very
recently proposed theoretical scheme we demonstrate a unique property of x-ray
Raman scattering by performing the symmetry decomposition on the density of
unoccupied electronic states into - and -type symmetry contributions.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
Role of Brans-Dicke Theory with or without self-interacting potential in cosmic acceleration
In this work we have studied the possibility of obtaining cosmic acceleration
in Brans-Dicke theory with varying or constant (Brans- Dicke
parameter) and with or without self-interacting potential, the background fluid
being barotropic fluid or Generalized Chaplygin Gas. Here we take the power law
form of the scale factor and the scalar field. We show that accelerated
expansion can also be achieved for high values of for closed Universe.Comment: 12 Latex pages, 20 figures, RevTex styl
Randomized Reference Classifier with Gaussian Distribution and Soft Confusion Matrix Applied to the Improving Weak Classifiers
In this paper, an issue of building the RRC model using probability
distributions other than beta distribution is addressed. More precisely, in
this paper, we propose to build the RRR model using the truncated normal
distribution. Heuristic procedures for expected value and the variance of the
truncated-normal distribution are also proposed. The proposed approach is
tested using SCM-based model for testing the consequences of applying the
truncated normal distribution in the RRC model. The experimental evaluation is
performed using four different base classifiers and seven quality measures. The
results showed that the proposed approach is comparable to the RRC model built
using beta distribution. What is more, for some base classifiers, the
truncated-normal-based SCM algorithm turned out to be better at discovering
objects coming from minority classes.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1901.0882
