The accumulation of deficits approach to describe frailty
The advancing age of the participants of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Potsdam study was the incentive to investigate frailty as a major parameter of ageing. The aim of this study was to develop a multidimensional tool to measure frailty in an ageing, free-living study population. The "accumulation of deficits approach" was used to develop a frailty index (FI) to characterize a sub-sample (N = 815) of the EPIC-Potsdam (EPIC-P) study population regarding the aging phenomenon. The EPIC-P frailty index (EPIC-P-FI) included 32 variables from the following domains: health, physical ability, psychosocial and physiological aspects. P-values were calculated for the linear trend between sociodemographic and life style variables and the EPIC-P-FI was calculated using regression analysis adjusted for age. The relationship between the EPIC-P-FI and age was investigated using fractional polynomials. Some characteristics such as age, education, time spent watching TV, cycling and a biomarker of inflammation (C-reactive protein) were associated with frailty in men and women. Interestingly, living alone, having no partner and smoking status were only associated with frailty in men, and alcohol use and physical fitness (VO2max) only in women. The generated, multidimensional FI, adapted to the EPIC-P study, showed that this cohort is a valuable source for further exploration of factors that promote healthy ageing
Effects of new physics in neutrino oscillations in matter
A new flavor changing electron neutrino interaction with matter would always
dominate the nu_e oscillation probability at sufficiently high neutrino
energies. Being suppressed by theta_{13}, the energy scale at which the new
effect starts to be relevant may be within the reach of realistic experiments,
where the peculiar dependence of the signal with energy could give rise to a
clear signature in the nu_e --> nu_tau channel. The latter could be observed by
means of a coarse large magnetized detector by exploiting tau --> mu decays. We
discuss the possibility of identifying or constraining such effects with a high
energy neutrino factory. We also comment on the model independent limits on

Prediction of circulating adipokine levels based on body fat compartments and adipose tissue gene expression
BACKGROUND: Adipokines are hormones secreted from adipose tissue (AT), and a number of them have been established as risk factors for chronic diseases. However, it is not clear whether and to what extent adiposity, gene expression, and other factors determine their circulating levels. OBJECTIVES: To assess to what extent adiposity, as measured by the amount of subcutaneous AT (SAT) and visceral AT (VAT) using magnetic resonance imaging, and gene expression levels in SAT determine plasma concentrations of the adipokines adiponectin, leptin, soluble leptin receptor, resistin, interleukin 6, and fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4). METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 156 participants from the EPIC Potsdam cohort study and analyzed multiple regression models and partial correlation coefficients. RESULTS: For leptin and FABP4 concentrations, 81 and 45% variance were explained by SAT mass, VAT mass, and gene expression in SAT in multivariable regression models. For the remaining adipokines, AT mass and gene expression explained <16% variance of plasma concentrations. Gene expression in SAT was a less important predictor compared to AT mass. SAT mass was a better predictor than VAT mass for leptin (partial correlation r = 0.81, 95% confidence interval 0.75–0.86, vs. r = 0.58, 95% confidence interval 0.46–0.67), while differences between AT compartments were small for the other adipokines. CONLUSIONS: While plasma levels of leptin and FABP4 can be explained in a large and medium part by the amount of AT and SAT gene expression, surprisingly, these predictors explained only little variance for all other investigated adipokines
On the massless "just-so" solution to the solar neutrino problem
We study the effect of the non-resonant, vacuum oscillation-like neutrino
flavor conversion induced by non-standard flavor changing and non-universal
flavor diagonal neutrino interactions with electrons in the sun. We have found
an acceptable fit for the combined analysis for the solar experiments total
rates, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) energy spectrum and zenith angle dependence.
Phenomenological constraints on non-standard flavor changing and non-universal

Reexamining nonstandard interaction effects on supernova neutrino flavor oscillations
Several extensions of the standard electroweak model allow new four-fermion
interactions (nu_a nu_b * ff) with strength eps_ab*G_F, where (a,b) are flavor
indices. We revisit their effects on flavor oscillations of massive
(anti)neutrinos in supernovae, in order to achieve, in the region above the
protoneutron star, an analytical treatment valid for generic values of the
neutrino mixing angles (omega,phi,psi)=(theta_12,theta_13,theta_23). Assuming
that eps_ab<<1, we find that the leading effects on the flavor transitions
occurring at high (H) and low (L) density along the supernova matter profile
can be simply embedded through the replacements phi-->phi+eps_H and
omega-->omega+eps_L, respectively, where eps_H and eps_L are specific linear
combinations of the eps_ab's. Similar replacements hold for eventual
oscillations in the Earth matter. From a phenomenological point of view, the
most relevant consequence is a possible uncontrolled bias (phi-->phi+eps_H) in
the value of the mixing angle phi inferred by inversion of supernova neutrino
data. Such a drawback, however, does not preclude the discrimination of the
neutrino mass spectrum hierarchy (direct or inverse) through supernova neutrino

Hoigné's syndrome, an uncommon mimicker of anaphylaxis: Systematic literature review.
The term Hoigné's syndrome denotes a mimicker of anaphylaxis, which occurs immediately after the parenteral administration of a drug and is likely caused by non-thrombotic pulmonary and systemic drug micro-embolization. It has so far been documented uniquely in case reports and small case series. Because this condition has never been systematically evaluated, we performed a structured literature review (pre-registered as CRD42023392962). The search was carried out in Excerpta Medica, National Library of Medicine, and Google Scholar. Cases with features consistent with anaphylaxis, urticaria, angioedema, asthma, syncope, anxiety, or panic attack triggered by needle phobia, and local anesthetic systemic toxicity were excluded. For the final analysis, we retained reports published between 1951 and 2021, which presented 247 patients with Hoigné's syndrome: 37 children and 211 adults with a male: female ratio of 2.1 : 1.0. The patients presented within 1 min after parenteral administration of a drug (intramuscular penicillin in 90 % of the cases) with chest discomfort, shortness of breath, fear of death, psychomotor agitation, and auditory or visual hallucinations and impairment. Recovery occurred within 30 min. The diagnosis of Hoigné's syndrome was also established in five patients 66-91 years of age with pre-existing cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases, who suddenly died after the administration of penicillin despite not exhibiting the aforementioned symptoms. It was therefore speculated that pulmonary drug micro-embolization induced a lethal cardiovascular compromise in these individuals. Histologic investigations supporting this hypothesis were performed in only one case. The diagnosis of Hoigné's pulmonary drug micro-embolization was established also in five patients with pre-existing cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases, who suddenly died after the administration of penicillin despite not exhibiting the afore mentioned symptoms. Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations and New Physics
We study the robustness of the determination of the neutrino masses and
mixing from the analysis of atmospheric and K2K data under the presence of
different forms of phenomenologically allowed new physics in the nu_mu--nu_tau
sector. We focus on vector and tensor-like new physics interactions which allow
us to treat, in a model independent way, effects due to the violation of the
equivalence principle, violations of the Lorentz invariance both CPT conserving
and CPT violating, non-universal couplings to a torsion field and non-standard
neutrino interactions with matter. We perform a global analysis of the full
atmospheric data from SKI together with long baseline K2K data in the presence
of nu_mu -> nu_tau transitions driven by neutrino masses and mixing together
with sub-dominant effects due to these forms of new physics. We show that
within the present degree of experimental precision, the extracted values of
masses and mixing are robust under those effects and we derive the upper bounds

Autoimmune markers and vascular immune deposits in Finkelstein-Seidlmayer vasculitis: Systematic literature review.
Finkelstein-Seidlmayer vasculitis, also called acute hemorrhagic edema of young children or infantile immunoglobulin A vasculitis, is habitually a benign skin-limited small vessel leukocytoclastic vasculitis that mainly affects infants 24 months or less of age. Since this disease is commonly triggered by an infection, an immune-mediated origin has been postulated. To better appreciate the possible underlying immune mechanism of this vasculitis, we addressed circulating autoimmune markers and vascular immune deposits in patients contained in the Acute Hemorrhagic Edema BIbliographic Database, which incorporates all original reports on Finkelstein-Seidlmayer vasculitis. A test for at least one circulating autoimmune marker or a vascular immune deposit was performed in 243 cases. Subunits of complement system C4 resulted pathologically reduced in 4.7% and C3 in 1.4%, rheumatoid factor was detected in 6.1%, and antinuclear antibodies in 1.9% of cases. Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies were never demonstrated. Immunofluorescence studies were performed on 125 skin biopsy specimens and resulted positive for complement subunits in 46%, fibrinogen in 45%, immunoglobulin A in 25%, immunoglobulin M in 24%, immunoglobulin G in 13%, and immunoglobulin E in 4.2% of cases. Infants testing positive for vascular immunoglobulin A deposits did not present a higher prevalence of systemic involvement or recurrences, nor a longer disease duration. In conclusion, we detected a very low prevalence of circulating autoimmune marker positivity in Finkelstein-Seidlmayer patients. Available immunofluorescence data support the notion that immune factors play a relevant role in this vasculitis. Furthermore, vascular immunoglobulin A deposits seem not to play a crucial role in this disease
Status of a Supersymmetric Flavour Violating Solution to the Solar Neutrino Puzzle with Three Generations
We present a general study of a three neutrino flavour transition model based
on the supersymmetric interactions which violate R-parity. These interactions
induce flavour violating scattering reactions between solar matter and
neutrinos. The model does not contain any vacuum mass or mixing angle for the
first generation neutrino. Instead, the effective mixing in the first
generation is induced via the new interactions. The model provides a natural
interpretation of the atmospheric neutrino anomaly, and is consistent with
reactor experiments. We determine all R-parity violating couplings which can
contribute to the effective neutrino oscillations, and summarize the present
laboratory bounds. Independent of the specific nature of the (supersymmetric)
flavour violating model, the experimental data on the solar neutrino rates and
the recoil electron energy spectrum are inconsistent with the theoretical
predictions. The confidence level of the -analysis ranges between and . The incompatibility, is due to the new SNO
results, and excludes the present model. We conclude that a non-vanishing
vacuum mixing angle for the first generation neutrino is necessary in our
model. We expect this also to apply to the solutions based on other flavour

Can lepton flavor violating interactions explain the LSND results?
If the atmospheric and the solar neutrino problem are both explained by
neutrino oscillations, and if there are only three light neutrinos, then all
mass-squared differences between the neutrinos are known. In such a case,
existing terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments cannot be significantly
affected by neutrino oscillations, but, in principle there could be an anomaly
in the neutrino flux due to new neutrino interactions. We discuss how a
non-standard muon decay would modify the
neutrino production processes of these experiments. Since violation
is small for New Physics above the weak scale one can use related
flavor-violating charged lepton processes to constrain these decays in a model
independent way. We show that the upper bounds on ,
muonium-antimuonium conversion and rule out any observable
effect for the present experiments due to
for , respectively. Applying similar arguments to
flavor-changing semi-leptonic reactions we exclude the possibility that the
"oscillation signals" observed at LSND are due to flavor-changing interactions
