Stationary phase slip state in quasi-one-dimensional rings

The nonuniform superconducting state in a ring in which the order parameter vanishing at one point is studied. This state is characterized by a jump of the phase by π\pi at the point where the order parameter becomes zero. In uniform rings such a state is a saddle-point state and consequently unstable. However, for non-uniform rings with e.g. variations of geometrical or physical parameters or with attached wires this state can be stabilized and may be realized experimentally.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, RevTex 4.0 styl

Flux transitions in a superconducting ring

We perform a numeric study of the flux transitions in a superconducting ring at fixed temperature, while the applied field is swept at an ideally slow rate. The current around the ring and its free energy are evaluated. We partially explain some of the known experimental features, and predict a considerably large new feature: in the vicinity of a critical field, giant jumps are expected

Quenched invariance principle for random walks in balanced random environment

We consider random walks in a balanced random environment in Zd\mathbb{Z}^d, d2d\geq 2. We first prove an invariance principle (for d2d\ge2) and the transience of the random walks when d3d\ge 3 (recurrence when d=2d=2) in an ergodic environment which is not uniformly elliptic but satisfies certain moment condition. Then, using percolation arguments, we show that under mere ellipticity, the above results hold for random walks in i.i.d. balanced environments.Comment: Published online in Probab. Theory Relat. Higgs Boson Decay into Hadronic Jets

The remarkable agreement of electroweak data with standard model (SM) predictions motivates the study of extensions of the SM in which the Higgs boson is light and couples in a standard way to the weak gauge bosons. Postulated new light particles should have small couplings to the gauge bosons. Within this context it is natural to assume that the branching fractions of the light SM-like Higgs boson mimic those in the standard model. This assumption may be unwarranted, however, if there are non-standard light particles coupled weakly to the gauge bosons but strongly to the Higgs field. In particular, the Higgs boson may effectively decay into hadronic jets, possibly without important bottom or charm flavor content. As an example, we present a simple extension of the SM, in which the predominant decay of the Higgs boson occurs into a pair of light bottom squarks that, in turn, manifest themselves as hadronic jets. Discovery of the Higgs boson remains possible at an electron-positron linear collider, but prospects at hadron colliders are diminished substantially.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure

Relation between Tunneling and Particle Production in Vacuum Decay

The field-theoretical description of quantum fluctuations on the background of a tunneling field σ\sigma is revisited in the case of a functional Schrodinger approach. We apply this method in the case when quantum fluctuations are coupled to the σ\sigma field through a mass-squared term, which is 'time-dependent' since we include the dynamics of σ\sigma . The resulting mode functions of the fluctuation field, which determine the quantum state after tunneling, display a previously unseen resonance effect when their mode number is comparable to the curvature scale of the bubble. A detailed analysis of the relation between the excitations of the field about the true vacuum (interpreted as particle creation) and the phase shift coming from tunneling is presented.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR

Dietary supplementation with multiple micronutrients: No beneficial effects in pediatric cystic fibrosis patients

AbstractBackgroundCystic fibrosis (CF) patients are subjected to increased oxidative stress due to chronic pulmonary inflammation and recurrent infections. Additionally, these patients have diminished skeletal muscle performance and exercise capacity. We hypothesize that a mixture of multiple micronutrients could have beneficial effects on pulmonary function and muscle performance.MethodsA double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled, cross-over trial with a mixture of multiple micronutrients (ML1) was performed in 22 CF patients (12.9±2.5 yrs) with predominantly mild lung disease. Anthropometric measures, pulmonary function, exercise performance by bicycle ergometry, muscular strength and vitamins A and E were determined.ResultsAnalysis was performed using the paired Student t-test comparing the change in each parameter during ML1 and placebo. Plasma vitamin E and A levels increased during ML1 when compared to placebo. However, no significant difference between the effect of the ML1 or placebo was observed neither for FEV1, FVC, anthropometry, nor for the parameters for muscle performance.ConclusionsThe micronutrient mixture was not superior to placebo with respect to changes in pulmonary function or muscle performance in pediatric CF patients, despite a significant increase in plasma vitamin E concentrations

Approximate particle number projection for finite range density dependent forces

The Lipkin-Nogami method is generalized to deal with finite range density dependent forces. New expressions are derived and realistic calculations with the Gogny force are performed for the nuclei 164^{164}Er and 168^{168}Er. The sharp phase transition predicted by the mean field approximation is washed out by the Lipkin-Nogami approach; a much better agreement with the experimental data is reached with the new approach than with the Hartree-Fock_Bogoliubov one, specially at high spins.Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX 3.0, 3 postscript figures included using uufiles. ηη\eta-\eta^\prime mixing and the next-to-leading-order power correction

The next-to-leading-order O(1/Q4)O(1/Q^4) power correction for ηγ\eta\gamma and ηγ\eta^\prime\gamma form factors are evaluated and employed to explore the ηη\eta-\eta^\prime mixing. The parameters of the two mixing angle scheme are extracted from the data for form factors, two photon decay widths and radiative J/ψJ/\psi decays. The χ2\chi^2 analysis gives the result: fη1=(1.16±0.06)fπ,fη8=(1.33±0.23)fπ,θ1=9±3,θ8=21.3±2.3f_{\eta_1}=(1.16\pm0.06)f_\pi, f_{\eta_8}=(1.33\pm0.23)f_\pi, \theta_1=-9^\circ\pm 3^\circ, \theta_8=-21.3^\circ\pm 2.3^\circ, where fη1(8)f_{\eta_{1(8)}} and θ1(8)\theta_{1(8)} are the decay constants and the mixing angles for the singlet (octet) state. In addition, we arrive at a stringent range for fηc:10f_{\eta^\prime}^c:-10 MeVfηc4\le f_{\eta^\prime}^c\le -4 MeV.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, To be publshied in Phys. Rev.

Running into New Territory in SUSY Parameter Space

The LEP-II bound on the light Higgs mass rules out the vast majority of parameter space left to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with weak-scale soft-masses. This suggests the importance of exploring extensions of the MSSM with non-minimal Higgs physics. In this article, we explore a theory with an additional singlet superfield and an extended gauge sector. The theory has a number of novel features compared to both the MSSM and Next-to-MSSM, including easily realizing a light CP-even Higgs mass consistent with LEP-II limits, tan(beta) < 1, and a lightest Higgs which is charged. These features are achieved while remaining consistent with perturbative unification and without large stop-masses. Discovery modes at the Tevatron and LHC are discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures; Typo in equation (4.5) corrected; submitted to JHE

Small scale energy release driven by supergranular flows on the quiet Sun

Get PDF
In this article we present data and modelling for the quiet Sun that strongly suggest a ubiquitous small-scale atmospheric heating mechanism that is driven solely by converging supergranular flows. A possible energy source for such events is the power transfer to the plasma via the work done on the magnetic field by photospheric convective flows, which exert drag of the footpoints of magnetic structures. In this paper we present evidence of small scale energy release events driven directly by the hydrodynamic forces that act on the magnetic elements in the photosphere, as a result of supergranular scale flows. We show strong spatial and temporal correlation between quiet Sun soft X-ray emission (from <i>Yohkoh</i> and <i>SOHO</i> MDI-derived flux removal events driven by deduced photospheric flows. We also present a simple model of heating generated by flux submergence, based on particle acceleration by converging magnetic mirrors. In the near future, high resolution soft X-ray images from XRT on the <i>Hinode</i> satellite will allow definitive, quantitative verification of our results
