Theoretical analysis of the demand of money
The paper summarizes current mainstream views concerning the theory of money demand. A utility maximizing household chooses to hold money because it facilitates transactions, allowing it to economize on shopping time. Two types of implied money demand functions are derived: a “proper” demand function with arguments exogenous to the household and a conventional “portfolio balance” relationship. The historical evolution of ideas pertaining to money demand is reviewed. A final section considers ongoing controversies concerning the role of uncertainty, the use of overlapping generations and cash-in-advance models, and the interpretation of empirical results suggestive of extremely slow portfolio adjustment.Money ; Interest rates

Large Coercivity in Nanostructured Rare-earth-free MnxGa Films
The magnetic hysteresis of MnxGa films exhibit remarkably large coercive
fields as high as 2.5 T when fabricated with nanoscale particles of a suitable
size and orientation. This coercivity is an order of magnitude larger than in
well-ordered epitaxial film counterparts and bulk materials. The enhanced
coercivity is attributed to the combination of large magnetocrystalline
anisotropy and ~ 50 nm size nanoparticles. The large coercivity is also
replicated in the electrical properties through the anomalous Hall effect. The
magnitude of the coercivity approaches that found in rare-earth magnets, making
them attractive for rare-earth-free magnet applications
Combined inhibitory effect of nisin with EDTA against Listeria monocytogenes in soy-protein edible coating on turkey frankfurters stored at 4°C and 10°C
Several food contamination outbreaks are linked to Listeria monocytogenes. More effective methods are needed to prevent the growth and recontamination of L. monocytogenes on ready-to-eat (RTE) food products. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the inhibitory activities of nisin (10,000 IU/mL), EDTA (sodium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid: 1.6 mg/mL), and the combination of nisin (10,000 IU/mL) with EDTA 1.6 mg/mL either in brain-heart-infusion (BHI) media at 37°C for 72 h or in soy-protein edible coating on the surface of full-fat commercial turkey frankfurters against the cell populations of approximately 106 colony forming units (CFU/mL) of L. monocytogenes. The surface-inoculated frankfurters were dipped into soy-protein film forming solutions with and without the addition of antimicrobial agents [(nisin (10,000 IU) or EDTA (0.16%) or the combination)] and stored at either 4°C or 10°C. The inhibitory effects of edible coatings were evaluated on a weekly basis for 45 d. The greatest inhibitory activities of 6 log cycle reductions of L. monocytogenes were found when nisin was combined with EDTA and eliminated 6 log cycles of L. monocytogenes in both systems. In the combined nisin (10,000 IU) with EDTA (0.16%) treatment, the L. monocytogenes population was reduced to undetectable levels after 15 h or 7 d incubation in BHI at 37°C or on turkey frankfurters stored at 4°C and 10°C, respectively. This research has demonstrated that the use of an edible film coating containing nisin with EDTA is a promising means of controlling the growth and recontamination of L. monocytogenes on RTE meat products
Computer Programs for Calculating and Plotting the Stability Characteristics of a Balloon Tethered in a Wind
Computer programs for calculating the stability characteristics of a balloon tethered in a steady wind are presented. Equilibrium conditions, characteristic roots, and modal ratios are calculated for a range of discrete values of velocity for a fixed tether-line length. Separate programs are used: (1) to calculate longitudinal stability characteristics, (2) to calculate lateral stability characteristics, (3) to plot the characteristic roots versus velocity, (4) to plot the characteristic roots in root-locus form, (5) to plot the longitudinal modes of motion, and (6) to plot the lateral modes for motion. The basic equations, program listings, and the input and output data for sample cases are presented, with a brief discussion of the overall operation and limitations. The programs are based on a linearized, stability-derivative type of analysis, including balloon aerodynamics, apparent mass, buoyancy effects, and static forces which result from the tether line

Local u'g'r'i'z' Standard Stars in the Chandra Deep Field-South
Because several observing programs are underway in various spectral regimes
to explore the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S), the value of local photometric
standards is obvious. As part of an NOAO Surveys Program to establish
u'g'r'i'z' standard stars in the southern hemisphere, we have observed the
central region of the CDF-S to create local standards for use by other
investigators using these filters. As a courtesy, we present the CDF-S
standards to the public now, although the main program will not finish until

Continuous-variable teleportation improvement by photon subtraction via conditional measurement
We show that the recently proposed scheme of teleportation of continuous
variables [S.L. Braunstein and H.J. Kimble, Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 869 (1998)]
can be improved by a conditional measurement in the preparation of the
entangled state shared by the sender and the recipient. The conditional
measurement subtracts photons from the original entangled two-mode squeezed
vacuum, by transmitting each mode through a low-reflectivity beam splitter and
performing a joint photon-number measurement on the reflected beams. In this
way the degree of entanglement of the shared state is increased and so is the
