Crystallographic analysis of rock grain orientation at meso- and microscale levels
This paper studies the results of electron backscatter diffraction analysis of naturally deformedpolycrystalline olivine. It also defines the dependence of lattice-preferred orientations of grains on their microstructural position and size. The authors detect the basic mechanisms, consequence and thermal dynamic modes of deformation. They also show that the development of a polycrystalline structure is determined by the following consecutive activation of sliding systems (010)[100] â {0kl}[100] â (100)[010] â {100}[001] â {110}[001], when dislocation sliding and diffusion creep change under the temperature decrease from 1000°C to 650°C
Neuropsychological Sequelae of Carotid Angioplasty with Stent Placement: Correlation with Ischemic Lesions in Diffusion Weighted Imaging
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Few studies investigated the neuropsychological outcome after carotid angioplasty with stent placement (CAS), yielding partially inconsistent results. The present investigation evaluated the effect of CAS in patients with high-grade stenosis and assessed the predictive value of ischemic lesion number for postinterventional cognitive deterioration. METHODS: 22 patients were tested neuropsychologically before and six weeks after CAS. Cerebral ischemic changes were assessed with diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) prior to and after angioplasty. RESULTS: Pre- to postinterventional cognitive performance improved significantly in terms of verbal memory (t = -2.30; p<0.05), whereas significant deterioration was noted regarding verbal memory span (t = 2.31; p<0.05). 8 (36%) persons conformed to the criteria of cognitive improvement. 6 patients (27%) were postinterventionally classified as having deficits. Analysis yielded no statistically significant correlations between lesion quantity and cognitive change. CONCLUSION: Both improvement and deterioration of cognitive functioning was observed in our collective of patients, leaving the neuropsychological outcome after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty unpredictable in individual cases. The presence of acute ischemic lesions on DWI was found to be not tightly associated with cognitive dysfunction after CAS
Epidemiological Evidence for Work Load as a Risk Factor for Osteoarthritis of the Hip: A Systematic Review
Osteoarthritis of the hip (OA) is a common degenerative disorder of the joint cartilage that presents a major public health problem worldwide. While intrinsic risk factors (e.g, body mass and morphology) have been identified, external risk factors are not well understood. In this systematic review, the evidence for workload as a risk factor for hip OA is summarized and used to derive recommendations for prevention and further research.Epidemiological studies on workload or occupation and osteoarthritis of the hip were identified through database and bibliography searches. Using pre-defined quality criteria, 30 studies were selected for critical evaluation; six of these provided quantitative exposure data.Study results were too heterogeneous to develop pooled risk estimates by specific work activities. The weight of evidence favors a graded association between long-term exposure to heavy lifting and risk of hip OA. Long-term exposure to standing at work might also increase the risk of hip OA.It is not possible to estimate a quantitative dose-response relationship between workload and hip OA using existing data, but there is enough evidence available to identify job-related heavy lifting and standing as hazards, and thus to begin developing recommendations for preventing hip OA by limiting the amount and duration of these activities. Future research to identify specific risk factors for work-related hip OA should focus on implementing rigorous study methods with quantitative exposure measures and objective diagnostic criteria

Inclusion of Brefeldin A during dendritic cell isolation allows in vitro detection of cross-presented self-antigens
The mechanism of cross-presentation enables dendritic cells (DC) to induce immunity against intracellular pathogens and to tolerize autoreactive CD8 T cells. The antigen-presenting cells (APCs) responsible for cross-presentation of self-antigens have been identified as CD8α CD11c DC. Isolation of these cells has been notoriously difficult, and the resulting responses of T cell hybridomas were too low to permit further studies. Here, we demonstrate that inclusion of Brefeldin A (BfA), an agent reported to block MHC class I-peptide complex turnover on the cell surface, during DC isolation from transgenic RIP-mOVA mice facilitated activation and proliferation of naïve OVA-specific CD8 T cells in vitro. CD8α DC were more efficient than CD8α CD11c. BfA also reversibly preserved expression of costimulatory molecules by DC, as evidenced by their expression of costimulatory markers and by an increased stimulatory capacity of DC matured in vivo by LPS. We conclude that the use of BfA notably improves sensitivity of detection of cross-presented self-antigens
Icing Temperature Measurements of Water on Pyroelectric Single Crystals: Impact of Experimental Methods on the Degree of Supercooling
In our experiments, the icing temperature of small water volumes placed on different pyroelectric single crystals (SrxBa1âxNb2O6, LiNbO3, and LiTaO3) was determined using two measurement setups: (1) the sessile droplet and (2) ring system method. In the first method, a free-standing water droplet was exposed to several external factors in the air environment. This was found to lead to higher icing temperatures compared to the second method where the water was more isolated from external factors such as evaporation. In the second method, the material of the ring system was found to be an important factor determining the freezing temperature of the enclosed water. A recommendation for the application of both methods is given, their advantages and disadvantages depending on the purpose of measurement, and their reproducibility for practical applications. In addition to this, the correlation between pyroelectricity and icing temperature, with regard to several types of internal and external factors affecting water freezing, is also discussed in the paper
Cutting edge: TLR ligands are not sufficient to break cross-tolerance to self-antigens
Cross-presentation of peripheral self-Ags by dendritic cells (DC) can induce deletion of autoreactive CTL by a mechanism termed cross-tolerance. Activation of DC by microbial TLR ligands is thought to result in adaptive immunity. However, activation of tolerogenic DC may cause autoimmunity by stimulating instead of deleting autoreactive CTL. To investigate this scenario, we have monitored the response of autoreactive CTL in specific for the transgenic self Ag, OVA, expressed in pancreatic islets of RIP-mOVA mice injected with ligands of TLR2, 3, 4, and 9. This somewhat enhanced proliferation and cytokine production, and moderately reduced the CTL number able to induce autoimmunity. Nevertheless, physiological CTL numbers were deleted before disease ensued, unless specific CD4 T cell help was provided. In conclusion, DC activation by TLR ligands was insufficient to break peripheral cross-tolerance in the absence of specific CD4 T cell help, and triggered autoimmunity by stimulating the early effector phase of autoreactive CTL only when their precursor frequency was extremely high
