    Do We See Eye to Eye? Moderators of Correspondence Between Student and Faculty Evaluations of Day-to-Day Teaching

    Students and instructors show moderate levels of agreement about the quality of day-to-day teaching. In the present study, we replicated and extended this finding by asking how correspondence between student and instructor ratings is moderated by time of semester and student demographic variables. Participants included 137 students and 5 instructors. On 10 separate days, students and instructors rated teaching effectiveness and challenge level of the material. Multilevel modeling indicated that student and instructor ratings of teaching effectiveness converged overall, but more advanced students and Caucasian students converged more closely with instructors. Student and instructor ratings of challenge converged early but diverged later in the semester. These results extend our knowledge about the connection between student and faculty judgments of teaching

    Nonstranger Victimization and Inmate Maladjustment: Is the Relationship Gendered?

    Scholars have hypothesized that victimization elicits distinctive effects on women’s pathways to prison and subsequent prison maladjustment, but few researchers have investigated gender differences in this relationship. Using nationally representative samples of men and women housed in state prisons, we examine gender differences in the effects of experiencing different types of nonstranger victimization prior to prison on inmate maladjustment. Results indicate that pre-prison nonstranger victimization affects men’s and women’s maladjustment similarly, with some gender differences—specifically, the effect of being physically assaulted by a nonstranger as an adult on violent misconduct was stronger among men, as was the effect of child abuse on men’s depressive symptoms. Our findings suggest the effects of experiencing nonstranger victimization prior to incarceration on prison maladjustment may be gender-neutral more so than gender-specific. Based on our findings, nonstranger victimization should be deemed important in theories of men’s maladjustment as well as in theories of women’s maladjustment

This new book, edited by Ruth Catlow and Penny Rafferty, who have been at the forefront of investigations into the relationship between DAOs and the arts, constitutes over 5 years of research with essays, interviews, exercises and prototypes from leading thinkers, artists and technologists across this emerging field. In recent years DAOs have been heralded as a powerful stimulus for experimentation to reshape new cultural value systems for interdependence, cooperation, and care. At a time when the mainstream artworld is focused on NFTs, this book refocuses attention toward DAOs as potentially the most radical blockchain technology for the arts, in the long term. Contributors engage with both past and emergent methodologies for building resilient and mutable systems for scale-free mutual aid.     Long Term Sequela of Pediatric Bladder Reconstruction

    Children with refractory neurogenic bladder (NGB) who have failed maximal medical management are presented with options for bladder reconstruction. It is critical to understand the long-term sequela of bladder augmentation and bladder neck reconstruction to properly counsel families regarding these procedures. Benefits may include preservation of renal function, continence, reduced risk of renal-related mortality, and potential improvements in quality of life (QOL). However, these advantages must be balanced with the risks of bladder calculi, perforation, need for additional surgery, acid/base disturbances, vitamin B12 deficiency, and malignancy. Therefore, careful patient selection and preoperative counseling are paramount for those undergoing bladder reconstruction which includes intestinal bladder augmentation, as these patients require lifelong vigilant follow-up

    Weak lensing flexion as a probe of galaxy cluster substructure

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Physics, 2011.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 129-133).Measuring galaxy cluster total masses and the amount of dark matter substructure within galaxy cluster haloes is a fundamental probe of the ACDM model of structure formation, as well as the interactions between baryonic and non-baryonic matter. In this thesis I approach the topic of cluster mass structure in two ways. With a combination of optical imaging, spectroscopy, and X-ray observations I determine that the cluster RCS043938-2904.7, while apparently anomalous initially due to its high optical richness and low X-ray surface brightness, is in fact an association of structures along the line of sight. Accounting for this structure brings the observed cluster properties into agreement with known scaling relations. I also present a novel method for measuring weak gravitational lensing flexion to inform mass measurements on small scales. While previously published methods for measuring flexion focus on measuring derived properties of the lensed images, such as shapelet coefficients or surface brightness moments, my method fits a fully mass-sheet-invariant parametrized Analytic Image Model (AIM) to the each galaxy image. This simple parametric model traces the distortion of lensed image isophotes. I tested the AIM method using simulated data images with realistic noise and a variety of input image properties, and I show that it successfully reproduces the input lensing fields. I also apply the AIM method for flexion measurement to Hubble Space Telescope observations of Abell 1689, and detect mass structure in that cluster using only flexion measured with the AIM method.by Benjamin Martin Cain.Ph.D

    Cost-effectiveness analysis of the management of distal ureteral stones in children

    Objective To determine the most cost-effective approach to the management of distal ureteral stones in children given the potential for recurrent renal colic during a trial of passage versus potential stent discomfort and complications of ureteroscopy. Methods We developed a decision tree to project costs and clinical outcomes associated with observation, medical explusive therapy (MET), and ureteroscopy for the management of an index patient with a 4mm distal ureteral stone. We determined which strategy would be least costly and offer the most pain-free days within 30 days of diagnosis. We performed a one-way sensitivity analysis on the probability of successful stone passage with MET. We obtained probabilities from the literature and costs from the 2016 Pediatric Health Information System Database. Results Ureteroscopywas the costliest strategy but maximized the number of pain-free days within 30 days of diagnosis (5,282/29pain−freedays).METwaslesscostlythanureteroscopybutalsolesseffective(5,282/29 pain-free days). MET was less costly than ureteroscopybut also less effective (615/21.8 pain-free days). Observation cost more than MET and was also less effective ($2,139/15.5 pain-free days). The one-way sensitivity analysis on the probability of successful stone passage with MET demonstrated that ureteroscopyalways has the highest net monetary benefits value and is therefore the recommended strategy given a fixed WTP. Discussion Using a rigorous decision-science approach, we found that ureteroscopy is the recommended strategy in children with small distal ureteral stones. Although it cost more than MET, it resulted in more pain-free days in the first 30 days following diagnosis given the faster resolution of the stone episode
