Geometrical aspects and connections of the energy-temperature fluctuation relation
Recently, we have derived a generalization of the known canonical fluctuation
relation between heat capacity and
energy fluctuations, which can account for the existence of macrostates with
negative heat capacities . In this work, we presented a panoramic overview
of direct implications and connections of this fluctuation theorem with other
developments of statistical mechanics, such as the extension of canonical Monte
Carlo methods, the geometric formulations of fluctuation theory and the
relevance of a geometric extension of the Gibbs canonical ensemble that has

Development of advanced fuel cell system, phase 3
A multiple task research and development program was performed to improve the weight, life, and performance characteristics of hydrogen-oxygen alkaline fuel cells for advanced power systems. Gradual wetting of the anode structure and subsequent long-term performance loss was determined to be caused by deposition of a silicon-containing material on the anode. This deposit was attributed to degradation of the asbestos matrix, and attention was therefore placed on development of a substitute matrix of potassium titanate. An 80 percent gold 20 percent platinum catalyst cathode was developed which has the same performance and stability as the standard 90 percent gold - 10 percent platinum cathode but at half the loading. A hybrid polysulfone/epoxy-glass fiber frame was developed which combines the resistance to the cell environment of pure polysulfone with the fabricating ease of epoxy-glass fiber laminate. These cell components were evaluated in various configurations of full-size cells. The ways in which the baseline engineering model system would be modified to accommodate the requirements of the space tug application are identified
Equilibrium fluctuation theorems compatible with anomalous response
Previously, we have derived a generalization of the canonical fluctuation
relation between heat capacity and energy fluctuations , which is able to describe the existence of macrostates with negative
heat capacities . In this work, we extend our previous results for an
equilibrium situation with several control parameters to account for the
existence of states with anomalous values in other response functions. Our
analysis leads to the derivation of three different equilibrium fluctuation
theorems: the \textit{fundamental and the complementary fluctuation theorems},
which represent the generalization of two fluctuation identities already
obtained in previous works, and the \textit{associated fluctuation theorem}, a
result that has no counterpart in the framework of Boltzmann-Gibbs
distributions. These results are applied to study the anomalous susceptibility
of a ferromagnetic system, in particular, the case of 2D Ising model.Comment: Extended version of the paper published in JSTA
Development of advanced fuel cell system, phase 2
A multiple task research and development program was performed to improve the weight, life, and performance characteristics of hydrogen-oxygen alkaline fuel cells for advanced power systems. Development and characterization of a very stable gold alloy catalyst was continued from Phase I of the program. A polymer material for fabrication of cell structural components was identified and its long term compatibility with the fuel cell environment was demonstrated in cell tests. Full scale partial cell stacks, with advanced design closed cycle evaporative coolers, were tested. The characteristics demonstrated in these tests verified the feasibility of developing the engineering model system concept into an advanced lightweight long life powerplant
Lightweight Vacuum Jacket for Cryogenic Insulation - Appendices to Final Report
The feasibility is demonstrated of producing a lightweight vacuum jacket using state-of-the-art technology and materials. Design and analytical studies were made on an orbital maneuvering system fuel tank. Preliminary design details were completed for the tank assembly which included an optimized vacuum jacket and multilayered insulation system. A half-scale LH2 test model was designed and fabricated and a force/stiffness proof test was conducted on the vacuum jacket. A vacuum leak rate of 0.00001 was measured, approximately 1500 hours of vacuum pressure was sustained, and 29 vacuum pressure cycles were experienced prior to failure. For vol. 1, see N75-26192
