Temporal reasoning in a logic programming language with modularity

Actualmente os Sistemas de Informação Organizacionais (SIO) lidam cada vez mais com informação que tem dependências temporais. Neste trabalho concebemos um ambiente de trabalho para construir e manter SIO Temporais. Este ambiente assenta sobre um linguagem lógica denominada Temporal Contextua) Logic Programming que integra modularidade com raciocínio temporal fazendo com que a utilização de um módulo dependa do tempo do contexto. Esta linguagem é a evolução de uma outra, também introduzida nesta tese, que combina Contextua) Logic Programming com Temporal Annotated Constraint Logic Programming, na qual a modularidade e o tempo são características ortogonais. Ambas as linguagens são formalmente discutidas e exemplificadas. As principais contribuições do trabalho descrito nesta tese incluem: • Optimização de Contextua) Logic Programming (CxLP) através de interpretação abstracta. • Sintaxe e semântica operacional para uma linguagem que combina de um modo independente as linguagens Temporal Annotated Constraint Logic Programming (TACLP) e CxLP. É apresentado um compilador para esta linguagem. • Linguagem (sintaxe e semântica) que integra de um modo inovador modularidade (CxLP) com raciocínio temporal (TACLP). Nesta linguagem a utilização de um dado módulo está dependente do tempo do contexto. É descrito um interpretador e um compilador para esta linguagem. • Ambiente de trabalho para construir e fazer a manutenção de SIO Temporais. Assenta sobre uma especificação revista da linguagem ISCO, adicionando classes e manipulação de dados temporais. É fornecido um compilador em que a linguagem resultante é a descrita no item anterior. ABSTRACT- Current Organisational Information Systems (OIS) deal with more and more Infor-mation that, is time dependent. In this work we provide a framework to construct and maintain Temporal OIS. This framework builds upon a logical language called Temporal Contextual. Logic Programming that deeply integrates modularity with tem-poral reasoning making the usage of a module time dependent. This language is an evolution of another one, also introduced in this thesis, that combines Contextual Logic Programming with Temporal Annotated Constraint Logic Programming where modularity and time are orthogonal features. Both languages are formally discussed and illustrated. The main contributions of the work described in this thesis include: • Optimisation of Contextual Logic Programming (CxLP) through abstract interpretation. • Syntax and operational semantics for an independent combination of the temporal framework Temporal Annotated Constraint Logic Programming (TACLP) and CxLP. A compiler for this language is also provided. • Language (syntax and semantics) that integrates in a innovative way modularity (CxLP) with temporal reasoning (TACLP). In this language the usage of a given module depends of the time of the context. An interpreter and a compiler for this language are described. • Framework to construct and maintain Temporal Organisational Information Systems. It builds upon a revised specification of the language ISCO, adding temporal classes and temporal data manipulation. A compiler targeting the language presented in the previous item is also given

Knowledge Representation of Crime-Related Events: a Preliminary Approach

The crime is spread in every daily newspaper, and particularly on criminal investigation reports produced by several Police departments, creating an amount of data to be processed by Humans. Other research studies related to relation extraction (a branch of information retrieval) in Portuguese arisen along the years, but with few extracted relations and several computer methods approaches, that could be improved by recent features, to achieve better performance results. This paper aims to present the ongoing work related to SEM (Simple Event Model) ontology population with instances retrieved from crime-related documents, supported by an SVO (Subject, Verb, Object) algorithm using hand-crafted rules to extract events, achieving a performance measure of 0.86 (F-Measure)

O exercício físico aeróbio no tratamento da doença arterial periférica: revisão narrativa

Projeto de Graduação apresentado à Universidade Fernando Pessoa como parte dos requisitos para obtenção do grau de Licenciada em FisioterapiaA doença arterial periférica (DAP) é caracterizada pela falência parcial ou completa da capacidade do sistema arterial em fornecer sangue oxigenado aos tecidos periféricos. A claudicação intermitente (CI) como sintomatologia mais comum da DAP, resulta da dor muscular sentida nos membros inferiores induzida pela marcha. O exercício físico pode, com poucos custos, melhorar a CI nos pacientes com DAP. Pretende-se evidenciar o efeito dos programas de exercício físico na CI e os protocolos de treino mais eficazes. Vários estudos têm sido desenvolvidos para determinar o efeito dos programas de exercício físico, nomeadamente treino dinâmico de braços, treino de marcha, marcha modificada, treino de resistência dos membros inferiores e de força máxima. Conclusão: Os programas de treino que demonstraram ser mais eficientes para a avaliação e melhoria da claudicação foram aqueles que utilizaram a marcha até a instalação da dor máxima. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is characterized by partial or complete failure of the arterial system capacity to provide oxygenated blood to peripheral tissues. Intermittent claudication (IC) is the most common symptom of PAD and results from muscle pain in the lower limbs induced by walking. Exercise can, with few costs, improve CI in patients with PAD. We aim to demonstrate the effect of exercise programs on CI and the most effective training protocols. Several studies have been conducted to establish the effect of exercise programs, including: dynamic arm workout, gait training, modified gait, lower limbs resistance training and maximum strength. Descrevemos a utilização da web semântica no desenvolvimento desses sistemas. O trabalho desenvolvido define os processos que, pela avaliação dos históricos clínicos de pacientes, identifiquem os termos de importância semântica para a recuperação da informação clínica nestes relatórios

Internationalization of UniPlaces to the Spanish market: Internationalization plan to Madrid, Spain

Field Lab in Entrepreneurial Innovative VenturesThe rise in global students mobility is a long-term trend which is set to continue, and has created excellent investment opportunities in key European cities. Currently, 46% of international students study in Europe, and it’s expected that this number will increase in coming years. After becoming a competitive player as a two-sided platform offering quality and verified accommodation to students, UniPlaces decided that internationalization to Madrid was a viable option to increase its sales, revenues, and to improve its awareness in the European market. Although it was recently launched the company has since gain support from several investors, and practical knowledge in this market. This Work Project will study the implementation process of UniPlaces in Madrid. After doing an internal and external analysis it was defined the marketing mix, the mode of entry (creation of a branch in Madrid) and also people, investment, deadlines, and objectives. Finally, a risk assessment was also made, together with some final recommendations aiming to achieve a successful implementation and adaptation of UniPlaces to the Spanish market.NSBE - UN

The success story of NOBRAND : a case study on strategy

The following thesis, presented in the form of a case study, aims to report the successful story of NOBRAND, a Portuguese company within the footwear industry, whilst serving as pedagogical tool for exploring and reflecting on strategic frameworks. For this purpose, the case-study is written in a way that it may serve as a proper analytical tool for developing the strategic topics of resources and capabilities, the importance of clusters for competitive advantage and modes of internationalization based on strategic alliances. NOBRAND functions as a good example of a company that has worked on its resources and capabilities as a way to establish competitive advantage, whilst also taking advantage of its presence within the Portuguese Footwear cluster. By establishing international collaboration agreements and diversifying on their nature and conditions across different markets, the Portuguese footwear brand managed to expand its brand and products overseas. With a strong international focus, more than 90% of NOBRAND’s production is exported to international markets. Taking into account the resource-based view of the firm, a critical reflection on the most important resources and capabilities of NOBRAND is explored and considerations about the contribution of the synergies of the footwear cluster to NOBRAND’s distinctive resources and capabilities is also taken into account. Finally, there is a reflection on NOBRAND’s international strategic options, which leads to the conclusion that modes of internationalization are very much affected by the resource-commitment that a firm wants to pursue and also on its aversion to risk.A presente tese de dissertação, que toma a forma de um caso de estudo, tem como objectivo dar a conhecer a história de sucesso da NOBRAND, marca portuguesa de calçado, servindo ao mesmo tempo como uma ferramenta pedagógica para explorar e reflectir sobre tópicos de enquadramento estratégico. Com este intuito, o caso de estudo é escrito de forma que possa ser utilizado como uma ferramenta apropriada para desenvolver os temas estratégicos relativos a recursos e capacidades, importância dos ‘clusters’, e, finalmente, formas de internacionalização e alianças estratégicas. A NOBRAND funciona como um exemplo de uma empresa que procurou desenvolver os seus recursos e capacidades por forma a estabelecer vantagem competitiva, e, que, ao mesmo tempo, tirou proveito da sua presença no ‘cluster’ de calçado português para suster esta mesma competitividade. Com um foco internacional muito forte, a marca portuguesa estabeleceu diversas alianças estratégicas para penetração nos mercados externos, explorando diferentes tipos de colaboração, e, consequentemente, mais de 90% da produção da NOBRAND é exportada para mercados internacionais. A presente dissertação apresenta uma reflexão crítica sobre os mais importantes recursos e capacidades da NOBRAND e explora ainda de que forma a contribuição de sinergias criadas pelo ‘cluster’ contribuíram para este desenvolvimento interno da marca. Finalmente, é feita uma análise das decisões estratégicas da NOBRAND no que toca à internacionalização, que leva à conclusão de que os modos de internacionalização escolhidos tem muito que ver com o investimento em recursos que a empresa pretende seguir e também com sua aversão ao risco

Semantic Web Search Through Natural Language Dialogues

The Semantic Web as a knowledge base gives to the Question Answering systems the capabilities needed to go well beyond the usual word matching in the documents and find a more accurate answer, without needing the user intervention to interpret the documents returned. In this chapter, the authors introduce a Dialogue Manager that, throughout the analysis of the question and the type of expected answer, provides accurate answers to the questions posed in Natural Language. The Dialogue Manager not only represents the semantics of the questions but also represents the structure of the discourse, including the user intentions and the questions' context, adding the ability to deal with multiple answers and providing justified answers. The system performance is evaluated by comparing with similar question answering systems. Although the test suite is of small dimension, the results obtained are very promising
