    Saturation from nuclear pion dynamics

    Get PDF
We construct an equation-of-state for nuclear matter based on the chiral Lagrangian. The relevant scales are discussed and an effective chiral power expansion scheme, which is constructed to work around the nuclear saturation density, is presented. A realistic equation-of-state is obtained by adjusting one free parameter, when the leading and subleading terms in the expansion are included. The saturation mechanism is due to correlations induced by the one-pion-exchange interaction. Furthermore, we find a substantial deviation from the Fermi-gas estimate of the quark condensate in nuclear matter already at the saturation density.Comment: revised version, with minor corrections, 13 pages, 3 Postscript figure

Continuum HFB calculations with finite range pairing interactions

A new method of calculating pairing correlations in coordinate space with finite range interactions is presented. In the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approach the mean field part is derived from a Skyrme-type force whereas the pairing field is constructed with a Gogny force. An iterative scheme is used for solving the integro-differential HFB equations via the introduction of a local equivalent potential. The method is illustrated on the case of the nucleus 18^{18}C. It is shown that the results are insensitive to the cut off value in the quasiparticle spectrum if this value is above 100 MeV.Comment: 3 figures, in press, Phys. Lett.

A method of implementing Hartree-Fock calculations with zero- and finite-range interactions

We develop a new method of implementing the Hartree-Fock calculations. A class of Gaussian bases is assumed, which includes the Kamimura-Gauss basis-set as well as the set equivalent to the harmonic-oscillator basis-set. By using the Fourier transformation to calculate the interaction matrix elements, we can treat various interactions in a unified manner, including finite-range ones. The present method is numerically applied to the spherically-symmetric Hartree-Fock calculations for the oxygen isotopes with the Skyrme and the Gogny interactions, by adopting the harmonic-oscillator, the Kamimura-Gauss and a hybrid basis-sets. The characters of the basis-sets are discussed. Adaptable to slowly decreasing density distribution, the Kamimura-Gauss set is suitable to describe unstable nuclei. A hybrid basis-set of the harmonic-oscillator and the Kamimura-Gauss ones is useful to accelerate the convergence, both for stable and unstable nuclei.Comment: LaTex 32 pages with 6 Postscript figure

Nuclear energy density functional from chiral pion-nucleon dynamics: Isovector spin-orbit terms

We extend a recent calculation of the nuclear energy density functional in the systematic framework of chiral perturbation theory by computing the isovector spin-orbit terms: (ρpρn)(JpJn)Gso(kf)+(JpJn)2GJ(kf)(\vec \nabla \rho_p- \vec \nabla \rho_n)\cdot(\vec J_p-\vec J_n) G_{so}(k_f)+ (\vec J_p-\vec J_n)^2 G_J(k_f). The calculation includes the one-pion exchange Fock diagram and the iterated one-pion exchange Hartree and Fock diagrams. From these few leading order contributions in the small momentum expansion one obtains already a good equation of state of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter. We find that the parameterfree results for the (density-dependent) strength functions Gso(kf)G_{so}(k_f) and GJ(kf)G_J(k_f) agree fairly well with that of phenomenological Skyrme forces for densities ρ>ρ0/10\rho > \rho_0/10. At very low densities a strong variation of the strength functions Gso(kf)G_{so}(k_f) and GJ(kf)G_J(k_f) with density sets in. This has to do with chiral singularities mπ1m_\pi^{-1} and the presence of two competing small mass scales kfk_f and mπm_\pi. The novel density dependencies of Gso(kf)G_{so}(k_f) and GJ(kf)G_J(k_f) as predicted by our parameterfree (leading order) calculation should be examined in nuclear structure calculations.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure, published in: Physical Review C68, 014323 (2003

Single particle strength restoration and nuclear transparency in high Q^2 exclusive (e,e'p) reactions

Quenching of the single particle strength which previously precluded unambiguous measurement of nuclear transparency in quasifree (e,e'p) reactions at high momentum transfer is evaluated from the cross sections of measured processes. We have demonstrated evidence of the single particle strength restoration with increase of the momentum transfer in exclusive (e,e'p) reactions and argue that in practically interesting cases of study the nuclear transparency in these processes quenching is weakly depends on the probability of short range nucleon correlations. It is shown that use of Glauber approximation well describes NE18 and E94-139 (e,e'p) data at the momentum transfers 1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 3 GeV^2. This gives a further support to our observation that the quenching of nuclear levels strongly depends on the resolution (Q^2)and practically disappears at Q^2>1GeV^2.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures; references added, discussion extende

Signals for black body limit in coherent ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions

    Get PDF
We argue that study of total cross section of photoabsorption and coherent photoproduction of ρ,ρ\rho,\rho^{\prime}-mesons in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions (UPC) is effective method to probe onset of black body limit(BBL) in the soft and hard QCD interactions. We illustrate the expected features of the onset of BBL using generalized vector dominance model. We show that this model describes very well ρ\rho-meson coherent photoproduction at 6Eγ10GeV6 \leq E_{\gamma} \leq 10 GeV. In the case of ρ\rho-meson production we find a UPC cross section which is a factor 1.5\sim 1.5 larger than the one found by Klein and Nystrand. The advantages of the process of coherent dijet production to probe onset of BBL in hard scattering regime where decomposition over the twists becomes inapplicable are explained and relative importance of the γ+Pomeron\gamma +Pomeron and γ+γ\gamma +\gamma mechanisms is estimated.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure

A unique spinodal region in asymmetric nuclear matter

Asymmetric nuclear matter at sub-saturation densities is shown to present only one type of instabilities. The associated order parameter is dominated by the isoscalar density and so the transition is of liquid-gas type. The instability goes in the direction of a restoration of the isospin symmetry leading to a fractionation phenomenon. These conclusions are model independent since they can be related to the general form of the asymmetry energy. They are illustrated using density functional approaches.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.

Cross sections for the excitation of isovector charge-exchange resonances in 208Tl

The Glauber approximation for the treatment of heavy-ion scattering, has already been shown to give reliable predictions for the reaction cross section in the particular case of intermediate energy charge-exchange processes. In the present work, we couple a Glauber-type model to microscopic Random Phase Approximation calculations of the charge-exchange excitations of 208^{208}Pb. The aim is to solve the longstanding question whether the very elusive charge-exchange isovector monopole has been really identified in the past experiments, or other multipoles were prevalent in the observed spectra.Comment: text + 4 figures; accepted for publication in Phys.
