Loading and testing a light scattering cell with a binary fluid mixture near its critical composition
Critical phenomena has been the subject of physics research for many years. However, only in recent years has the research effort become intense. The current intensity has caused the study of critical phenomena to be grouped into a previous older era and a present contemporary era. Turbidity cell filling with methanol cyclohexane is one of the first steps toward a further understanding of critical phenomena. Work performed during the research period is outlined. During this period, research was spent developing apparatus and techniques that will make it possible to study critical phenomena through turbidity measurements on methanol cyclohexane. Topics covered range from the orientation of turbidity cell parts for assembly to the filling apparatus and procedure used when th cell is built. The last section will briefly cover some of the observations made when viewing the cell in a controlled water bath. However, before mention is made of the specifics of the summer research, a short introduction to critical phenomena and turbidity and how they relate to this experiment is provided
A Strong X-Ray Burst from the Low Mass X-Ray Binary EXO0748-676
We have observed an unusually strong X-ray burst as a part of our regular
eclipse timing observations of the low mass binary system EXO0748-676. The
burst peak flux was 5.2x10^-8 ergs cm^-2 s^-1, approximately five times the
normal peak X-ray burst flux observed from this source by RXTE. Spectral fits
to the data strongly suggest that photospheric radius expansion occurred during
the burst. In this Letter we examine the properties of this X-ray burst, which
is the first example of a radius expansion burst from EXO0748-676 observed by
RXTE. We find no evidence for coherent burst oscillations. Assuming that the
peak burst luminosity is the Eddington luminosity for a 1.4 solar mass neutron
star we derive a distance to EXO0748-676 of 7.7 kpc for a helium-dominated
burst photosphere and 5.9 kpc for a hydrogen-dominated burst photosphere.Comment: 15 pages including 2 figures and 1 table. Accepted for publication in

Quantum Gravity Corrections for Schwarzschild Black Holes
We consider the Matrix theory proposal describing eleven-dimensional
Schwarzschild black holes. We argue that the Newtonian potential between two
black holes receives a genuine long range quantum gravity correction, which is
finite and can be computed from the supergravity point of view. The result
agrees with Matrix theory up to a numerical factor which we have not computed.Comment: 14 pages, Tex, no figure
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of a dilute two-dimensional electron system exhibiting Rashba spin splitting
Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) at 5 K in B-fields up to 7 T, we
investigate the local density of states of a two-dimensional electron system
(2DES) created by Cs adsorption on p-type InSb(110). The 2DES, which in
contrast to previous STS studies exhibits a 2D Fermi level, shows standing
waves at B = 0 T with corrugations decreasing with energy and with wave numbers
in accordance with theory. In magnetic field percolating drift states are
observed within the disorder broadened Landau levels. Due to the large electric
field perpendicular to the surface, a beating pattern of the Landau levels is
found and explained quantitatively by Rashba spin splitting within the lowest
2DES subband. The Rashba splitting does not contribute significantly to the
standing wave patterns in accordance with theory.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Economics of Marital Instability
This paper focuses on the causes of divorce. Section I developsa theoretical analysis of marital dissolution incorporating uncertaintyabout the outcomes of marital decisions into a framework of utilitymaximization and the marriage market. Section II explores the implica-tions of the theoretical analysis with cross-sectional data, primarilythe 1967 Survey of Economic Opportunity and the Terman sample. Therelevance of both the theoretical and empirical analyses in explainingthe recent acceleration in the U.S. divorce rate is discussed.
Structure in Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory
We show that requiring sixteen supersymmetries in quantum mechanical gauge
theory implies the existence of a web of constrained interactions. Contrary to
conventional wisdom, these constraints extend to arbitrary orders in the
momentum expansion.Comment: 22 pages, LaTe
On the Bekenstein-Hawking Entropy, Non-Commutative Branes and Logarithmic Corrections
We extend earlier work on the origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy to
higher-dimensional spacetimes. The mechanism of counting states is shown to
work for all spacetimes associated with a Euclidean doublet
of electric-magnetic dual brane pairs of type II
string-theory or M-theory wrapping the spacetime's event horizon plus the
complete internal compactification space. Non-Commutativity on the brane
worldvolume enters the derivation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in a
natural way. Moreover, a logarithmic entropy correction with prefactor 1/2 is
derived.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures; refs. adde
Probing electron-electron interaction in quantum Hall systems with scanning tunneling spectroscopy
Using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy applied to the
Cs-induced two-dimensional electron system (2DES) on p-type InSb(110), we probe
electron-electron interaction effects in the quantum Hall regime. The 2DES is
decoupled from p-doped bulk states and exhibits spreading resistance within the
insulating quantum Hall phases. In quantitative agreement with calculations we
find an exchange enhancement of the spin splitting. Moreover, we observe that
both the spatially averaged as well as the local density of states feature a
characteristic Coulomb gap at the Fermi level. These results show that
electron-electron interaction effects can be probed down to a resolution below
all relevant length scales.Comment: supplementary movie in ancillary file
Compactifications of Heterotic Theory on Non-Kahler Complex Manifolds: I
We study new compactifications of the SO(32) heterotic string theory on
compact complex non-Kahler manifolds. These manifolds have many interesting
features like fewer moduli, torsional constraints, vanishing Euler character
and vanishing first Chern class, which make the four-dimensional theory
phenomenologically attractive. We take a particular compact example studied
earlier and determine various geometrical properties of it. In particular we
calculate the warp factor and study the sigma model description of strings
propagating on these backgrounds. The anomaly cancellation condition and
enhanced gauge symmetry are shown to arise naturally in this framework, if one
considers the effect of singularities carefully.
We then give a detailed mathematical analysis of these manifolds and
construct a large class of them. The existence of a holomorphic (3,0) form is
important for the construction. We clarify some of the topological properties
of these manifolds and evaluate the Betti numbers. We also determine the
superpotential and argue that the radial modulus of these manifolds can
actually be stabilized.Comment: 75 pages, Harvmac, no figures; v2: Some new results added, typos
