Vibration of Periodic Drill-Strings with Local Sources of Resonance
A new class of drill-strings is proposed for attenuating undesirable vibrations to ensure effective operation. The drill-string is provided with passive periodic inserts, which are integrated with sources of local resonance (LR). The inserts make the drill-string act as a low frequency pass mechanical filter for the transmission of vibration along the drill-string. Proper design of the periodic inserts with sources of LR tend to shift these stop bands towards zones of lower frequencies to enable confining the dominant modes of vibration of the drill-string within these bands. In this manner, propagation of the vibration along the drill-string can be completely blocked. A finite element model (FEM) is developed using ANSYS to investigate the bandgap characteristics of the proposed drill-string with sources of LR. The developed FEM accounts for bending, torsional, and axial vibrations of the drill-string in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the periodic inserts with LR in simultaneous control of these combined modes as compared to conventional solid periodic inserts, which are only limited to controlling bending vibrations. The effect of the design parameters of the periodic inserts with LR on the bandgap characteristics of the drill-string is investigated to establish guidelines of this class of drill-strings
Study of obesity associated proopiomelanocortin gene polymorphism: Relation to metabolic profile and eating habits in a sample of obese Egyptian children and adolescents
AbstractBackgroundMelanocortinergic system represents a known system involved in the central regulation of body weight with the central proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons forming a potent anorexigenic network. Polymorphisms in the POMC gene locus are associated with obesity phenotypes.AimTo assess the contribution of the POMC gene 9-bp insertional polymorphism in the susceptibility to obesity and its relation to body mass index (BMI) and adiposity-related co-morbidities in obese children and adolescents; as well as binge eating behavior.Patients and methodsFifty obese children and adolescents with simple obesity were screened for Binge Eating Disorder (BED) by The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), they were compared to 50 age, sex and pubertal stage-matched non obese controls. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, abdominal ultrasound for fatty liver, measurement of fasting lipid profile, fasting insulin, fasting blood glucose and assessment of POMC gene 9-bp insertional polymorphism were done.ResultsObese patients had significantly higher anthropometric measurements, blood pressure percentiles, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and fasting lipid profiles, and higher frequency of occurrence of non alcoholic fatty liver disease and BED. Allelic frequencies of POMC gene 9bp insertional polymorphism were comparable in patients and controls (p=0.956). Fasting insulin levels were significantly higher in the heterozygous cases having the polymorphism than in wild homozygous cases; whereas no difference was observed among the controls.ConclusionThis polymorphism was associated with higher fasting insulin levels in the obese patients only. These findings support the hypothesis that the melanocortin pathway may modulate glucose metabolism in obese subjects indicating a possible gene-environment interaction. POMC variant may be involved in the natural history of polygenic obesity, contributing to the link between type 2 diabetes and obesity
Dynamic Stability of Cylindrical Shells under Moving Loads by Applying Advanced Controlling Techniques Part IâUsing Periodic Stiffeners
The load acting on a cylindrical shell, with added periodic stiffeners,
under a transient pressure pulse propelling a pullet (gun case) has been experimentally
studied. This study is based on two modes of velocities, the first is subcritical mode and
the second is supercritical mode. The stiffeners are added to the gun tube of an
experimental gun facility, of 14âmm bore diameter. The radial strains are measured by
using high-frequency strain gage system in phase with a laser beam detection system.
Time-resolved strain measurement of the wall response is obtained and both precursor
and transverse hoop strains have been resolved. The time domain analysis has been done
using âwavelet transform packageâ in order to determine the frequency domain
modes of vibrations and detect the critical frequency mode. A complete comparison
of the dynamic behavior of the shell tube before and after adding periodic stiffeners has
been done, which indicated that a significant damping effect reaches values between 61.5
and 38% for subcritical and critical modes. The critical frequency of the stiffened shell
is increased, so the supercritical mode is changed to subcritical mode. The amplification
and dispersion factors are determined and constructed; there is a reduction in the
corresponding speed frequencies by about 10%. Also the radial-bending vibrations and
tube muzzle motions are detected at muzzle velocity ratio of 0.99%, the results indicated
that there is a significant improvement in increasing the number of rounds per second by
about 36% and increasing the pointing precision by about 47%

The Jewish Issue in Islamic Radicalism: historicity, impact and evolutions
This article focuses on the longâterm ideological vision of Jews and Israel in radical Islam. By examining, on the one hand, the animosity towards JudeoâIsraelis in the spawning and bolstering of Islamist, Salafist and Jihadist movements, and on the other hand, the sociological composition of Jihadist elites related to the IsraeliâPalestinian conflict, I show the centrality of the Judeophobic discourse in the world of radical Islam as well as the importance of Israel in its reinforcement. By trying to historicize this discourse, as well as political and strategic movements linked with the State of Israel, I also question the nature of the hostility towards Judaism, and more specifically the role of the Israeli issue in the development and evolution of the most radical and violent forms of Muslim identity over nearly a century
