Ectopic placement is more unusual and there has been no discussion in the literature of an ectopic mandibular premolar in the coronoid process. In this case report, we present an impacted ectopic mandibular permanent premolar in the sigmoid notch (incisura mandibulae) region. Etiology of the tooth and treatment options are discussed and illustrated by Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images

    Random vibration of a road vehicle

A road vehicle is modeled as quarter car, half car, and bicycle car. Natural frequencies of each model are found in first step. Then, responses to harmonic and random base excitation for each models are determined. The accuracy of the developed programs for different car models in Mathematica is evaluated by comparing the natural frequencies available in the literature. The effects of modeling approach on natural frequencies and response to harmonic and random base excitation are obtained. The results are presented in graphical and functional forms

    Finite element modelling of transportation tunnels

    The aim of this thesis is to determine the ground deformation and stress distribution around highway tunnels at various stages of excavation and for several support conditions using finite element modelling techniques. When ground is excavated and material removed the subsequent redistribution of stress in the remaining surrounding material needs to be treated by one of three methods. These are the gravity difference method, the stress reversal technique and the relaxation approach. The first two methods were chosen for the simulation of excavation in this study. The tunnel data are in the form of the dimensions of the tunnel, heights of the rock layers, details of the shotcrete lining and tunnel support systems. A pre-processing program was written to transform this information into a finite element mesh in a format suitable for use by PAFEC-FE software. This enables different tunnel models and meshes to be produced with minimum error and time. The lack of adequate post-processing facilities available in PAFEC-FE dictated that computer programs needed to be written in order to reformat the textual output files and process the mesh stress and displacement outputs for graphical display using UNIRAS. In this way repeated use could be made of PAFEC-FE without time-consuming and error-prone manual retrieval of data. The tunnels were modelled at various stages of excavation and with such support provided at those stages as to allow the computed displacements to be compared with measurements made on highway tunnels in Turkey. The stresses generated in the tunnel supports and surrounding ground were also calculated to enable the possibility of damage or failure of the support structure or ground to be assessed and the selection of an optimal support system. Insertion of a support system into the model has a marginal effect on the development of rock strength around an excavation boundary

    Inequalities in home learning and schools’ provision of distance teaching during school closure of COVID-19 lockdown in the UK

    Parents and schools were caught unprepared during the COVID-19 school closure. Since schools have a key role in creating equal opportunities, transferring schooling to families is likely to increase learning inequalities. Using the Understandings Society COVID-19 dataset, we find children who received free school meals, children from lower-educated and single- parent families and children with Pakistani or Bangladeshi backgrounds devote significantly less time to schoolwork at home. Schools’ provisions of offline and online distance teaching and homework checking significantly increase the time children spend on home learning and mitigate most of the disadvantages

    Local phase transitions in a model of multiplex networks with heterogeneous degrees and inter-layer coupling

    Multilayer networks represent multiple types of connections between the same set of nodes. Clearly, a multilayer description of a system adds value only if the multiplex does not merely consist of independent layers, i.e. if the inter-layer overlap is nontrivial. On real-world multiplexes, it is expected that the observed overlap may partly result from spurious correlations arising from the heterogeneity of nodes and partly from true interdependencies. However, no rigorous way to disentangle these two effects has been developed. In this paper we introduce an unbiased maximum-entropy model of multiplexes with controllable node degrees and controllable overlap. The model can be mapped to a generalized Ising model where the combination of node heterogeneity and inter-layer coupling leads to the possibility of local phase transitions. In particular, we find that an increased heterogeneity in the network results in different critical points for different pairs of nodes, which in turn leads to local phase transitions that may ultimately increase the overlap. The model allows us to quantify how the overlap can be increased by either increasing the heterogeneity of the network (spurious correlation) or the strength of the inter-layer coupling (true correlation), thereby disentangling the two effects. As an application, we show that the empirical overlap in the International Trade Multiplex is not merely a spurious result of the correlation between node degrees across different layers, but requires a non-zero inter-layer coupling in its modeling
