    This paper presents some of the highlights about research and development of sub-aquatic acoustics, as well as it gives recognition to the members of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), who contributed with their work along the Second World War. The results of such work have turned into scientific and engineering achievements, which are published in literature about acoustics.Este artículo presentan algunos de los aspectos más sobresalientes de la investigación y desarrollo de la acústica subacuática, así como reconoce el mérito de miembros de la Sociedad Americana de Acústica (Acoustics Society of America, ASA), quienes contribuyeron con su trabajo durante el período de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.     Abnormal Intracellular Accumulation and Extracellular AÎČ Deposition in Idiopathic and Dup15q11.2-q13 Autism Spectrum Disorders

    <div><h3>Background</h3><p>It has been shown that amyloid ß (AÎČ), a product of proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid ÎČ precursor protein (APP), accumulates in neuronal cytoplasm in non-affected individuals in a cell type–specific amount.</p> <h3>Methodology/Principal Findings</h3><p>In the present study, we found that the percentage of amyloid-positive neurons increases in subjects diagnosed with idiopathic autism and subjects diagnosed with duplication 15q11.2-q13 (dup15) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In spite of interindividual differences within each examined group, levels of intraneuronal AÎČ load were significantly greater in the dup(15) autism group than in either the control or the idiopathic autism group in 11 of 12 examined regions (p<0.0001 for all comparisons; Kruskall-Wallis test). In eight regions, intraneuronal AÎČ load differed significantly between idiopathic autism and control groups (p<0.0001). The intraneuronal AÎČ was mainly N-terminally truncated. Increased intraneuronal accumulation of AÎČ<sub>17–40/42</sub> in children and adults suggests a life-long enhancement of APP processing with α-secretase in autistic subjects. AÎČ accumulation in neuronal endosomes, autophagic vacuoles, Lamp1-positive lysosomes and lipofuscin, as revealed by confocal microscopy, indicates that products of enhanced α-secretase processing accumulate in organelles involved in proteolysis and storage of metabolic remnants. Diffuse plaques containing AÎČ<sub>1–40/42</sub> detected in three subjects with ASD, 39 to 52 years of age, suggest that there is an age-associated risk of alterations of APP processing with an intraneuronal accumulation of a short form of AÎČ and an extracellular deposition of full-length AÎČ in nonfibrillar plaques.</p> <h3>Conclusions/Significance</h3><p>The higher prevalence of excessive AÎČ accumulation in neurons in individuals with early onset of intractable seizures, and with a high risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy in autistic subjects with dup(15) compared to subjects with idiopathic ASD, supports the concept of mechanistic and functional links between autism, epilepsy and alterations of APP processing leading to neuronal and astrocytic AÎČ accumulation and diffuse plaque formation.</p> </div

    A global analysis of Y-chromosomal haplotype diversity for 23 STR loci

    In a worldwide collaborative effort, 19,630 Y-chromosomes were sampled from 129 different populations in 51 countries. These chromosomes were typed for 23 short-tandem repeat (STR) loci (DYS19, DYS389I, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS385ab, DYS437, DYS438, DYS439, DYS448, DYS456, DYS458, DYS635, GATAH4, DYS481, DYS533, DYS549, DYS570, DYS576, and DYS643) and using the PowerPlex Y23 System (PPY23, Promega Corporation, Madison, WI). Locus-specific allelic spectra of these markers were determined and a consistently high level of allelic diversity was observed. A considerable number of null, duplicate and off-ladder alleles were revealed. Standard single-locus and haplotype-based parameters were calculated and compared between subsets of Y-STR markers established for forensic casework. The PPY23 marker set provides substantially stronger discriminatory power than other available kits but at the same time reveals the same general patterns of population structure as other marker sets. A strong correlation was observed between the number of Y-STRs included in a marker set and some of the forensic parameters under study. Interestingly a weak but consistent trend toward smaller genetic distances resulting from larger numbers of markers became apparent.Peer reviewe
