Desensitizing Inflation from the Planck Scale
A new mechanism to control Planck-scale corrections to the inflationary eta
parameter is proposed. A common approach to the eta problem is to impose a
shift symmetry on the inflaton field. However, this symmetry has to remain
unbroken by Planck-scale effects, which is a rather strong requirement on
possible ultraviolet completions of the theory. In this paper, we show that the
breaking of the shift symmetry by Planck-scale corrections can be
systematically suppressed if the inflaton field interacts with a conformal
sector. The inflaton then receives an anomalous dimension in the conformal
field theory, which leads to sequestering of all dangerous high-energy
corrections. We analyze a number of models where the mechanism can be seen in
action. In our most detailed example we compute the exact anomalous dimensions
via a-maximization and show that the eta problem can be solved using only
weakly-coupled physics.Comment: 34 pages, 3 figures
Impact of novel psychoactive substances on clinical and forensic toxicology and global public health
Novel psychoactive substances (NPS) have been a part of the landscape of clinical and forensic toxicology for over a century, beginning with the introduction of a few new drugs like heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and gammahydroxybutyric acid (GHB). However, after the appearance of synthetic cannabinoids in the early 2000’s there was a rapid emergence of hundreds of synthetic cathinones, benzodiazepines and opioids. Toxicology laboratories previously focused on a rather narrow range of compounds including amphetamines, cannabinoids, cocaine, opioids, antidepressants, salicylate and acetaminophen. Now potent fentanyl derivatives are mixed with heroin or substituted entirely, killing unsuspecting drug users at an alarming rate. Toxicology laboratories are challenged with detecting potent drug analogs that are only present in blood for a short period of time, urinary metabolites whose chemical formula and structures are initially unknown, and no available reference standards. Here four international experts discuss what fueled the global NPS market, how toxicology laboratories can best address this challenge, and how public health and law enforcement agencies can help reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with NPS
Field-test of a robust, portable, frequency-stable laser
We operate a frequency-stable laser in a non-laboratory environment where the
test platform is a passenger vehicle. We measure the acceleration experienced
by the laser and actively correct for it to achieve a system acceleration
sensitivity of = /g, /g, and /g for accelerations in three orthogonal
directions at 1 Hz. The acceleration spectrum and laser performance are
evaluated with the vehicle both stationary and moving. The laser linewidth in
the stationary vehicle with engine idling is 1.7(1) Hz
A Family of GFP-like Proteins with Different Spectral Properties in Lancelet Branchiostoma Floridae
Background:
Members of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) family share sequence similarity and the 11-stranded β-barrel fold. Fluorescence or bright coloration, observed in many members of this family, is enabled by the intrinsic properties of the polypeptide chain itself, without the requirement for cofactors. Amino acid sequence of fluorescent proteins can be altered by genetic engineering to produce variants with different spectral properties, suitable for direct visualization of molecular and cellular processes. Naturally occurring GFP-like proteins include fluorescent proteins from cnidarians of the Hydrozoa and Anthozoa classes, and from copepods of the Pontellidae family, as well as non-fluorescent proteins from Anthozoa. Recently, an mRNA encoding a fluorescent GFP-like protein AmphiGFP, related to GFP from Pontellidae, has been isolated from the lancelet Branchiostoma floridae, a cephalochordate (Deheyn et al., Biol Bull, 2007 213:95).
Results:
We report that the nearly-completely sequenced genome of Branchiostoma floridae encodes at least 12 GFP-like proteins. The evidence for expression of six of these genes can be found in the EST databases. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that a gene encoding a GFP-like protein was present in the common ancestor of Cnidaria and Bilateria. We synthesized and expressed two of the lancelet GFP-like proteins in mammalian cells and in bacteria. One protein, which we called LanFP1, exhibits bright green fluorescence in both systems. The other protein, LanFP2, is identical to AmphiGFP in amino acid sequence and is moderately fluorescent. Live imaging of the adult animals revealed bright green fluorescence at the anterior end and in the basal region of the oral cirri, as well as weaker green signals throughout the body of the animal. In addition, red fluorescence was observed in oral cirri, extending to the tips.
Conclusion
GFP-like proteins may have been present in the primitive Metazoa. Their evolutionary history includes losses in several metazoan lineages and expansion in cephalochordates that resulted in the largest repertoire of GFP-like proteins known thus far in a single organism. Lancelet expresses several of its GFP-like proteins, which appear to have distinct spectral properties and perhaps diverse functions.

Intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the six water molecules, generating edge-fused four-, five- or six-membered ring motifs and forming two-dimensional sheets. The sheets are stabilized by the formation of O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds between the water molecules and the bipyrimidine molecules, resulting in a three-dimensional network
Concealed concern: Fathers' experience of having a child with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Despite increased research into families of chronically ill children, more needs to be known about the father’s experience. We address this issue through asking: ‘What is it like to be the father of a child with juvenile idiopathic arthritis?’ (JIA). Four members of eight families with an adolescent diagnosed with JIA, including seven fathers, were interviewed and transcripts analyzed using grounded theory. This study suggests that fathers of children with JIA experience several severe losses which are exacerbated through comparisons they make between their own situation and that of fathers of healthy children. In addition, the fathers faced several constraints which reduced their opportunities to communicate with their ill child through shared activities. Fathers appeared to conceal their distress by adopting strategies of denial and distraction however their adjustment was facilitated, to some extent, by social support. They could also develop greater acceptance of their situation over time as the care of their ill child became assimilated into family life and constraints upon their life gradually reduced through the increased maturity of their son or daughter with JIA. These findings have implications for healthcare professionals and voluntary organizations
Bounds on SCFTs from Conformal Perturbation Theory
The operator product expansion (OPE) in 4d (super)conformal field theory is
of broad interest, for both formal and phenomenological applications. In this
paper, we use conformal perturbation theory to study the OPE of nearly-free
fields coupled to SCFTs. Under fairly general assumptions, we show that the OPE
of a chiral operator of dimension with its complex
conjugate always contains an operator of dimension less than . Our
bounds apply to Banks-Zaks fixed points and their generalizations, as we

Superpotential de-sequestering in string models
Non-perturbative superpotential cross-couplings between visible sector matter
and K\"ahler moduli can lead to significant flavour-changing neutral currents
in compactifications of type IIB string theory. Here, we compute corrections to
Yukawa couplings in orbifold models with chiral matter localised on D3-branes
and non-perturbative effects on distant D7-branes. By evaluating a threshold
correction to the D7-brane gauge coupling, we determine conditions under which
the non-perturbative corrections to the Yukawa couplings appear. The flavour
structure of the induced Yukawa coupling generically fails to be aligned with
the tree-flavour structure. We check our results by also evaluating a
correlation function of two D7-brane gauginos and a D3-brane Yukawa coupling.
Finally, by calculating a string amplitude between n hidden scalars and visible
matter we show how non-vanishing vacuum expectation values of distant D7-brane
scalars, if present, may correct visible Yukawa couplings with a flavour
