A Comparison of the Effectiveness of Scent Lures on Attracting Mesopredators

    Get PDF
A mesopredator is a medium-sized middle trophic level predator such as a raccoon (Procyon lotor), red fox (Vulpes vulpes), striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis), or coyote (Canis latrans; Crooks and Soule 1999). Mesopredators have long been trapped for recreational, economic, or academic reasons. Throughout human history trapping has been used to capture animals for food and skins, as well as to prevent personal harm and property damage from predators. In order to increase the probability of success, scent lures are often used as an attractant (Geary 1984, Mills et al. 2010, Schlexer 2008)

Hematuria Secondary to an Internal Iliac Artery Aneurysm

We report a case of macroscopic hematuria secondary to an aneurysm of the internal iliac artery. An 84-year-old male presented to our department with a 12-hour history of painless gross hematuria. Cystoscopy showed decreased expansion suggesting compression from outside the bladder. At the point of compression, increased vascularization was noted in the bladder mucosa without evidence of active bleeding. No trace of blood was identified coming from the ureteric orifices, the bladder neck, or the prostate. There was no evidence of intra-vesicular masses or other inflammatory changes. The abdominal computed tomography scan revealed left-sided hydronephrosis and an abdominal aortic aneurysm involving the aortic bifurcation and both internal iliac arteries. There was no evidence of rupture. An aneurysm of the internal iliac artery is a rare cause of macroscopic hematuria that can be fatal. Awareness of this as a possible cause of hematuria may assist in immediate diagnosis and appropriate treatment

A LOW COST PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING TRAINING REACTOR. Reactor Design and Feasibility Study

The conceptual design of a low cost training reactor for the instruction of physicists and engineers is covered. It is conceived as an instructional tool for a course such as that given at the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology. The reactor is of a modified pool type, and is designed for a maximum power level of one Mw. This arrangement will accommodate engineering experiments, shielding experiments, and critical experiments as well as being useful as a neutron and gamma source. (auth

Glial cell type-specific changes in spinal dipeptidyl peptidase 4 expression and effects of its inhibitors in inflammatory and neuropatic pain

Altered pain sensations such as hyperalgesia and allodynia are characteristic features of various pain states, and remain difficult to treat. We have shown previously that spinal application of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) inhibitors induces strong antihyperalgesic effect during inflammatory pain. In this study we observed low level of DPP4 mRNA in the rat spinal dorsal horn in physiological conditions, which did not change significantly either in carrageenan-induced inflammatory or partial nerve ligation-generated neuropathic states. In naive animals, microglia and astrocytes expressed DPP4 protein with one and two orders of magnitude higher than neurons, respectively. DPP4 significantly increased in astrocytes during inflammation and in microglia in neuropathy. Intrathecal application of two DPP4 inhibitors tripeptide isoleucin-prolin-isoleucin (IPI) and the antidiabetic drug vildagliptin resulted in robust opioid-dependent antihyperalgesic effect during inflammation, and milder but significant opioid-independent antihyperalgesic action in the neuropathic model. The opioid-mediated antihyperalgesic effect of IPI was exclusively related to mu-opioid receptors, while vildagliptin affected mainly delta-receptor activity, although mu- and kappa-receptors were also involved. None of the inhibitors influenced allodynia. Our results suggest pathology and glia-type specific changes of DPP4 activity in the spinal cord, which contribute to the development and maintenance of hyperalgesia and interact with endogenous opioid systems

The quality of service in hospitals cannot be separated from the problem of nurse performance. This is related to the presence of nurses who are on duty 24 hours a day to serve patients. Therefore, hospitals must have nurses who perform well who will support hospital performance so that customer or patient satisfaction is achieved. Nurse performance makes a major contribution in influencing patient satisfaction, considering that nurses are medical personnel who are in direct contact with patients. The aim of this research is to determine the performance of nurses at Ibnu Sina Hospital, Makassar City based on work stress, work relationships and work discipline. This research is a descriptive study with sampling using the total sampling method on 162 nurses. The results of the study showed that the performance of nurses in carrying out maintenance tasks obtained quite good performance (100%), the work stress of nurses obtained that nurses were quite stressed (48%), the work relationship in obtaining quite good results (100%), work discipline was included in the category of sufficient work discipline ( 100%). The conclusion of this research is that the performance of nurses at Ibnu Sina Hospital, Makassar City was in the quite good category.</p&gt
