    Z-prime Gauge Bosons at the Tevatron

    We study the discovery potential of the Tevatron for a Z-prime gauge boson. We introduce a parametrization of the Z-prime signal which provides a convenient bridge between collider searches and specific Z-prime models. The cross section for p pbar -> Z-prime X -> l^+ l^- X depends primarily on the Z-prime mass and the Z-prime decay branching fraction into leptons times the average square coupling to up and down quarks. If the quark and lepton masses are generated as in the standard model, then the Z-prime bosons accessible at the Tevatron must couple to fermions proportionally to a linear combination of baryon and lepton numbers in order to avoid the limits on Z--Z-prime mixing. More generally, we present several families of U(1) extensions of the standard model that include as special cases many of the Z-prime models discussed in the literature. Typically, the CDF and D0 experiments are expected to probe Z-prime-fermion couplings down to 0.1 for Z-prime masses in the 500--800 GeV range, which in various models would substantially improve the limits set by the LEP experiments.Comment: 34 pages, 13 figure

    On sets of irreducible polynomials closed by composition

    Let S\mathcal S be a set of monic degree 22 polynomials over a finite field and let CC be the compositional semigroup generated by S\mathcal S. In this paper we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for CC to be consisting entirely of irreducible polynomials. The condition we deduce depends on the finite data encoded in a certain graph uniquely determined by the generating set S\mathcal S. Using this machinery we are able both to show examples of semigroups of irreducible polynomials generated by two degree 22 polynomials and to give some non-existence results for some of these sets in infinitely many prime fields satisfying certain arithmetic conditions

    Characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from acute, sub-acute and sub-clinical staphylococcosis in rabbits

    [EN] Staphylococcus aureus bacteria isolated from different clinical presentations of staphylococcosis in rabbits were examined for the production of various virulence factors using biochemical and immunological tests. In the total of 106 S. aureus isolates; toxic shock syndrome toxin-1, staphylococcal enterotoxin-C, DNase, ¿-haemolysin, ß-haemolysin, ¿-haemolysin, protein A and clumping factor were observed with a frequency of 33.2, 16.98, 83.96, 69.81, 36.79, 100, 78.30 and 54.72 percent, respectively. No SE-A, SE-B and SE-D producing isolates were recovered in this study. All the S. aureus isolates from acute staphylococcosis produced TSST-1, SE-C and protein A. While ¿¿haemolysin and clumping factor were not detected in any acute isolates, these factors were observed at a relatively higher frequency in isolates from sub-acute and sub-clinical staphylococcosis. Coagulase type III was observed more predominantly with a frequency of 45.28%, while coagulase types V and VII were not observed in any isolate. Most of the virulence factors belonged to coagulase type III followed by type VI.     A COMPARISON OF THE DATA AGGREGATION APPROACH WITH THE LOGICAL RELATIONAL DESIGN METHODOLOGY

    A laboratory study comparing relational representations developed using the Data Aggregation approach with the Logical Relational Design Methodology (LRDM) was conducted to investigate whether non-expert users could better comprehend and apply either methodology. While no significant differences between user performance were noted, the study did find that subjects following the LRDM produced quality Entity-Relationship (ER) representations, but there was a marked deterioration of the translation to the relational form. The Data Aggregation solutions were generally poor in quality. The study concludes that while non-expert designers can produce acceptable data abstractions using a conceptual modeling methodology (e.g., ER diagrams), problems may arise during conversion to normalized relations (e.g., relational representations)

    Detection of low energy single ion impacts in micron scale transistors at room temperature

    We report the detection of single ion impacts through monitoring of changes in the source-drain currents of field effect transistors (FET) at room temperature. Implant apertures are formed in the interlayer dielectrics and gate electrodes of planar, micro-scale FETs by electron beam assisted etching. FET currents increase due to the generation of positively charged defects in gate oxides when ions (121Sb12+, 14+, Xe6+; 50 to 70 keV) impinge into channel regions. Implant damage is repaired by rapid thermal annealing, enabling iterative cycles of device doping and electrical characterization for development of single atom devices and studies of dopant fluctuation effects

    We consider the following general scheduling problem: there are m identical machines and n jobs all released at time 0. Each job j has a processing time pj, and an arbitrary non-decreasing function fj that specifies the cost incurred for j, for each possible completion time. The goal is to find a preemptive migratory schedule of minimum cost. This models several natural objectives such as weighted norm of completion time, weighted tardiness and much more. We give the first O(1) approximation algorithm for this problem, improving upon the O(loglognP) bound due to Moseley (2019). To do this, we first view the job-cover inequalities of Moseley geometrically, to reduce the problem to that of covering demands on a line by rectangular and triangular capacity profiles. Due to the non-uniform capacities of triangles, directly using quasi-uniform sampling loses a O(loglogP) factor, so a second idea is to adapt it to our setting to only lose an O(1) factor.     Medical symptoms associated with tobacco smoking with and without marijuana abuse among crack cocaine-dependent patients.

    Despite the widespread use of tobacco and marijuana by cocaine abusers, it remains unclear whether combined tobacco and marijuana smoking is more harmful than tobacco smoking alone in cocaine abusers. We investigated the differences in medical symptoms reported among 34 crack cocaine abusers who did not smoke tobacco or marijuana (C), 86 crack cocaine abusers who also smoked tobacco (C + T), and 48 crack abusers who smoked both tobacco and marijuana (C + T + M). Medical symptoms were recorded using a 134-item self-report instrument (MILCOM), and drug use was assessed using the Addiction Severity Index (ASI). After controlling for clinical and demographic differences, the C + T + M group reported significantly more total symptoms on the MILCOM as well as on the respiratory, digestive, general, and nose/throat subscales than the C + T or C groups. The C + T group reported higher total and respiratory and nose/throat symptoms than the C group. HOwever, the C group had the highest number of mood symptoms among the three groups. The C + T and C + T + M groups were comparable in number of cigarettes smoked and ASI scores. Although tobacco smoking is associated with higher reports of medical problems in crack abusers, smoking both marijuana and tobacco seems to be associated with greater medical problems than smoking tobacco alone. Tobacco smoking was not related to changes in cocaine use. Also, marijuana smoking does not appear to be associated with a reduction in tobacco or cocaine use

    Preventing human immunodeficiency virus infection among sexual assault survivors in Cape Town, South Africa: an observational study.

    We describe 131 South African sexual assault survivors offered HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). While the median days completed was 27 (IQR 27, 28), 34% stopped PEP or missed doses. Controlling for baseline symptoms, PEP was not associated with symptoms (OR = 1.30, 95% CI = 0.66, 2.64). Factors associated with unprotected sex included prior unprotected sex (OR = 6.46, 95% CI = 3.04, 13.74), time since the assault (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.12, 1.57) and age (OR = 1.30, 95% CI = 1.08, 1.57). Trauma counseling was protective (OR = 0.18, 95% CI = 0.05, 0.58). Four instances of seroconversion were observed by 6 months (risk = 3.7%, 95% CI = 1.0, 9.1). Proactive follow-up is necessary to increase the likelihood of PEP completion and address the mental health and HIV risk needs of survivors. Adherence interventions and targeted risk reduction counseling should be provided to minimize HIV acquisition

    Correlation for the Convective and Diffusive Evaporation of a Sessile Drop

    A simple correlation is developed to compute the evaporation rates of sessile drops and small puddles which are evaporating under the influences of both diffusion and natural convection of the vapor-air mixture surrounding the drop. The correlation is based on experiments conducted with eight hydrocarbons, which provide a factor of 16.6 variation in volatility as indicated by the equilibrium vapor pressures, a factor of 3.6 variation in molecular mass, and a factor of 2.2 variation in mass diffusivity, and thus the correlation is applicable for liquids having a broad range of properties. The correlation predicts the evaporation rates to within a root-mean-square (RMS) error of 6.5% over the broad range of conditions. Limitations of the correlation are investigated, and when one of the species is excluded, the RMS error is reduced to 4.9%. There are two main differences between this new correlation and the correlations that have been published previously. The first difference is the new correlation reduces to an expression for diffusion-limited evaporation as the density difference between the vapor-air mixture at the surface of the drop and the ambient air becomes negligible, or when the drop size becomes very small. The second difference is the form of the dependency on the density difference ratio, which in previous correlations is obtained solely through the Rayleigh number (Ra). This new correlation contains a term which represents the influence of natural convection on the evaporation rate and this term provides insight into the nature of the coupling of the diffusive and convective transport of the vapor

    An experiment was planned for the International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-1) to be launched around Feb. 1991. Crystals of triglycine sulfate (TGS) will be grown by low temperature solution crystal growth technique using a multiuser facility called Fluid Experiment System (FES). A special cooled sting technique of solution crystal growth will be used where heat is extracted from the seed crystal through a semi-insulating sting, thereby creating the desired supersaturation near the growing crystal. Also, a holocamera will be used to provide tomography of the three dimensional flow field and particle image displacement velocimetry to monitor the convective flows
