"Illustrating Shakespeare" celebrates both the 2003 return visit of the Royal Shakespeare Company to the University of Michigan and the McMillan Shakespeare Collection housed at the Special Collections Library. Founded in the 1880s, the Collection now numbers over 6000 volumes, providing a rich and varied resource for documenting the history of how Shakespeare's works were both presented and received. Genomic sequences capable of committing mouse and rat fibroblasts to adipogenesis
The mouse Swiss 3T3-F442A/3T3-C2 cell system Is well suited for the isolation of genes involved in commitment to adipogenesis. 3T3-F442A cells convert to adlpocytes with high efficiency in response to confluence and insulin. The sister clonal line 3T3-C2 does not respond to these signals, but can convert to adlpocytes when transfected with DNA from 3T3-F442A preadipocytes or from human fat. Human fat-tissue biopsy FO46 DNA transfected into 3T3-C2 gave rise to fat foci after two rounds of transfectlon and selection. A cosmld library of a subclone of secondary transfectant 3T3-C2/FO46-1 was screened for the human repetitive Alu sequence. Five out of eight Alu + recombinant clones committed 3T3-C2 cells to adipogenesis. The adipose commitment (AC) activity of one cosmld, p18A4, was found to reside in two small, non-Identical, subcloned sequences 1.2kb and 2.0kb in length, each separately able to commit 3T3-C2, precrlsis mouse and rat fibroblasts and the murtlpotentlal C3H10T1/2 cell line to adipogenesis. We conclude that commitment to adipogenesis can be effected in vitro with high efficiency by transfectlon of specific sequences Into a variety of host cells
Resonant scattering in a strong magnetic field: exact density of states
We study the structure of 2D electronic states in a strong magnetic field in
the presence of a large number of resonant scatterers. For an electron in the
lowest Landau level, we derive the exact density of states by mapping the
problem onto a zero-dimensional field-theoretical model. We demonstrate that
the interplay between resonant and non-resonant scattering leads to a
non-analytic energy dependence of the electron Green function. In particular,
for strong resonant scattering the density of states develops a gap in a finite
energy interval. The shape of the Landau level is shown to be very sensitive to
the distribution of resonant scatterers.Comment: 12 pages + 3 fig
Localized states in strong magnetic field: resonant scattering and the Dicke effect
We study the energy spectrum of a system of localized states coupled to a 2D
electron gas in strong magnetic field. If the energy levels of localized states
are close to the electron energy in the plane, the system exhibits a kind of
collective behavior analogous to the Dicke effect in optics. The latter
manifests itself in ``trapping'' of electronic states by localized states. At
the same time, the electronic density of states develops a gap near the
resonance. The gap and the trapping of states appear to be complementary and
reflect an intimate relation between the resonant scattering and the Dicke
effect. We reveal this relation by presenting the exact solution of the problem
for the lowest Landau level. In particular, we show that in the absence of
disorder the system undergoes a phase transition at some critical concentration

The presentation, clinical features, complications, and treatment of congenital dacryocystocele
Purpose To determine the incidence and presenting features of congenital dacryocystocele in the United Kingdom. To report on those cases complicated by dacryocystitis, respiratory compromise, and the treatment undertaken. Methods A prospective observational study of cases of congenital dacryocystocele presenting in the United Kingdom between September 2014 and October 2015. Infants <3 months of age presenting with a cystic swelling in the medial canthal area were included. Cases were identified via the British Ophthalmology Surveillance Unit (BOSU) reporting system. Results A total of 49 cases were reported during the study period. This gives an incidence of 1 in 18 597 live births. There was a 71% response rate to the questionnaire. The average age at presentation was 16.94 days. Dacryocystoceles were unilateral in 91% of cases. Dacryocystitis was a complicating factor in 49% of patients and 17% had respiratory distress. Uncomplicated dacryocystocele responded well to conservative measures in 86%. Surgical intervention was required in 23% of patients. Those cases complicated by dacryocystitis (29%) and nasal obstruction (17%) were more likely to require surgical intervention compared to those with dacryocystocele alone (14%). Digital massage appears to reduce the likelihood of requiring surgical intervention. The mean time to resolution was 19 days. Conclusions Congenital dacryocystocele is a rare presentation in the United Kingdom. Dacryocystitis and respiratory compromise commonly complicate a dacryocystocele. The use of digital massage as an early intervention is advocated and conservative measures may be sufficient in cases of uncomplicated dacryocystocele
WNT activation by lithium abrogates TP53 mutation associated radiation resistance in medulloblastoma
TP53 mutations confer subgroup specific poor survival for children with medulloblastoma. We hypothesized that WNT activation which is associated with improved survival for such children abrogates TP53 related radioresistance and can be used to sensitize TP53 mutant tumors for radiation. We examined the subgroup-specific role of TP53 mutations in a cohort of 314 patients treated with radiation. TP53 wild-type or mutant human medulloblastoma cell-lines and normal neural stem cells were used to test radioresistance of TP53 mutations and the radiosensitizing effect of WNT activation on tumors and the developing brain. Children with WNT/TP53 mutant medulloblastoma had higher 5-year survival than those with SHH/TP53 mutant tumours (100% and 36.6% +/- 8.7%, respectively (p < 0.001)). Introduction of TP53 mutation into medulloblastoma cells induced radioresistance (survival fractions at 2Gy (SF2) of 89% +/- 2% vs. 57.4% +/- 1.8% (p < 0.01)). In contrast, beta-catenin mutation sensitized TP53 mutant cells to radiation (p < 0.05). Lithium, an activator of the WNT pathway, sensitized TP53 mutant medulloblastoma to radiation (SF2 of 43.5% +/- 1.5% in lithium treated cells vs. 56.6 +/- 3% (p < 0.01)) accompanied by increased number of.H2AX foci. Normal neural stem cells were protected from lithium induced radiation damage (SF2 of 33% +/- 8% for lithium treated cells vs. 27% +/- 3% for untreated controls (p = 0.05). Poor survival of patients with TP53 mutant medulloblastoma may be related to radiation resistance. Brain Deletion of Insulin Receptor Substrate 2 Disrupts Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity and Metaplasticity
Diabetes mellitus is associated with cognitive deficits and an increased risk of dementia, particularly in the elderly. These deficits and the corresponding neurophysiological structural and functional alterations are linked to both metabolic and vascular changes, related to chronic hyperglycaemia, but probably also defects in insulin action in the brain. To elucidate the specific role of brain insulin signalling in neuronal functions that are relevant for cognitive processes we have investigated the behaviour of neurons and synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus of mice lacking the insulin receptor substrate protein 2 (IRS-2)
Adaptation of the Socioecological Model to Address Disparities in Engagement of Black Men in Prostate Cancer Genetic Testing
BACKGROUND: Black men consistently have higher rates of prostate cancer (PCA)- related mortality. Advances in PCA treatment, screening, and hereditary cancer assessment center around germline testing (GT). Of concern is the significant under-engagement of Black males in PCA GT, limiting the benefit of precision therapy and tailored cancer screening despite longstanding awareness of these disparities. To address these critical disparities, the Socioecological Model (SEM) was employed to develop comprehensive recommendations to overcome barriers and implement equitable strategies to engage Black males in PCA GT.
METHODS: Clinical/research experts, national organization leaders, and community stakeholders spanning multiple regions in US and Africa participated in developing a framework for equity in PCA GT grounded in the SEM. A novel mixed-methods approach was employed to generate key areas to be addressed and informed statements for consensus consideration utilizing the modified Delphi model. Statements achieving strong consensus (\u3e =75% agreement) were included in final equity frameworks addressing clinical/community engagement and research engagement.
RESULTS: All societal levels of the SEM (interpersonal, institutional, community, and policy/advocacy) must deliver information about PCA GT to Black males that address benefits/limitations, clinical impact, hereditary cancer implications, with acknowledgment of mistrust (mean scores [MS] 4.57-5.00). Interpersonal strategies for information delivery included engagement of family/friends/peers/Black role models to improve education/awareness and overcome mistrust (MS 4.65-5.00). Institutional strategies included diversifying clinical, research, and educational programs and integrating community liaisons into healthcare institutions (MS 4.57-5.00). Community strategies included partnerships with healthcare institutions and visibility of healthcare providers/researchers at community events (MS 4.65-4.91). Policy/advocacy included improving partnerships between advocacy and healthcare/community organizations while protecting patient benefits (MS 4.57-5.00). Media strategies were endorsed for the first time at every level (MS 4.56-5.00).
CONCLUSION: The SEM-based equity frameworks proposed provide the first multidisciplinary strategies dedicated to increase engagement of Black males in PCA GT, which are critical to reduce disparities in PCA-mortality through informing tailored screening, targeted therapy, and cascade testing in families
