    Accommodating Complex Substitution Patterns in a Random Utility Model of Recreational Fishing

    We employed a cross-nested logit (CNL) model that permits a rich pattern of substitution among alternatives within a closed form choice model. The specification we employed is ideal for applications with many choice alternatives, such as the 431 fishing sites in this application. The CNL model provided a significant improvement over multinomial and nested logit model specifications at explaining observed recreational fishing site choices by residents of northern Ontario, Canada. Results from two scenarios illustrated the implications of using the CNL model on spatial substitution patterns and welfare measures associated with attribute change scenarios. The CNL model forecasts demonstrated that the relative change in fishing site use was lower at the most affected sites and higher at sites near the affected sites than was predicted by the multinomial logit model.     A Comparison of Student-Athlete and Non-Athletes Perceptions of Academic Advisement Services

    The purpose of this study was to examine academic advisement expectations of student-athletes. Participants in this study included 189 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in a variety of courses offered through the Health, Physical Education, Recreation, & Sport program at a large Southeastern University. Thirty-eight percent (N=71) of the participants identified themselves as collegiate athletes. The students completed a survey instrument addressing expectations of their academic advisor. Student-athletes surveyed in this study demonstrated advisement expectations similar to those of the general student population. Mean responses to survey items indicated non-athletes placed more importance on individual survey items than did the student-athletes. Advisor's knowledge of course offerings within the department was considered important by 92.5% of all students. These findings assisted in identifying specifc elements useful in improving the academic advisement process and meeting student expectations. Student-athletes surveyed in this study demonstrated advisement expectations similar to those of the general student population. The authors asked, "Given that the levels of importance were similar for both groups, is there a need for separate academic advisement for student-athletes" (p. 89)

    Drinking Behavior Among College Students: Interventions to Increase Mindfulness and Social Capital

    The impacts of drinking behaviors are far-reaching, with college student drinking contributing to over 1,500 deaths and an estimated 696,000 assaults on college campuses each year (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism [NIAAA], 2019). There are a variety of explanations to explain why college students engage in risky drinking behaviors. However, there is evidence to suggest that drinking and other substance use may be a result of complex psychological origins, including adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This paper reviews the literature available on ACEs among college students, how these experiences impact alcohol use among this population, and potential areas for intervention, including those with a focus on mindfulness and social capital

    Social, Economic and Health Costs of Unintended Teen Pregnancy: The Circle of Care Intervention Program in Troup County, Georgia

    Unintended teenage pregnancy in the United States is a public health concern with ramifications that include a variety of social, economic and health costs. It has been estimated that adolescents giving birth before the age of 18 cost the United States at least $9.1 billion dollars annually (NCPTUP, 2008). Latest available national data indicate a slight increase in rates of unintended teen pregnancy after a 15 year period of steady decline. The unintended teen pregnancy rate in Troup County, Georgia in 2006 was 51.9/1,000 which was higher than the national average of 41.9/1,000(Kids Count, 2008). The purpose of this study was to review the Circle of Care intervention program, a collaborative multi-agency teen pregnancy prevention program. The Circle of Care program was developed in 1997 through the efforts of multiple community partner organizations. These organizations included the local school system, the Division of Family and Children Services, Public Health, Troup County Family Connection, the local teen clinic, the local hospital and other organizations. Participants in the Circle of Care program receive multiple services, including case management, a family assessment, parenting classes, home visits from the case manager, family planning assistance, services from the teen health clinic and the Division of Family and Children Services. Preliminary data indicate that Circle of Care participants gained social, economic and health benefits from participation in the program including: higher rates of high school enrollment, no repeat pregnancies, and no reported incidences of child abuse or child neglect. Projected cost savings from these outcomes are also reported. Preliminary examination of the Circle of Care program supports the efficacy of multi-level, collaborative efforts to reduce unintended teen pregnancy and subsequent social, economic and health risks. Future research should examine longer term outcomes of this program

    HIV/AIDS Knowledge Sources of College Student-Athletes in a Southern State

    This study examined the HIV/AIDS-related knowledge of 93 male and female college student-athletes at a DI institution in Louisiana. Knowledge levels are reported according to the ethnicity and gender of the respondents. Significant differences (p<.05) were found between ethnic groups for general knowledge about HIV/ AIDS and between genders for knowledge of disease transmissior methods and risk-reduction techniques. Survey participants indicated mass media, parents, and peers as the most common sources of HIV/AIDS information, and they preferred videos, small group discussions, and classroom lectures as instructional formats. Results may be useful in the development of more effective HIV/AIDS educational initiatives targeting college student-athletes

    Reduction of Hospital Environmental Contamination Using Automatic UV Room Disinfection

    The use of mobile ultraviolet (UV) germicidal irradiation has been documented to reduce contamination levels and HAIs in hospitals. However, there is a general lack of information on the efficacy of wall-mounted, automated UV systems that are designed to irradiate rooms whenever they are left unoccupied. In this study, the Aseptix 1 UVC device (which includes two motion detectors, a magnetic door contact, and a microprocessor programmed to deliver a five-minute dose of UVC when the room is empty and the door closed) was evaluated. The number of contaminated surfaces decreased by approximately 65% overall and this was found to be a statistically significant result at a 95% confidence level. During periods when the UV systems were de-activated, the frequency of contaminated surfaces immediately reverted to the prior rate (within 24 hours). In addition, airborne contamination dropped by approximately 40%. However, there is less statistical confidence in this result due to fewer samples and more variability inherent in the settle plate method used.St. Mary’s General Hospital|| University of Waterlo

    Knowledge Acquisition and Client Organisations: Case Study of a Student as Producer

    As a theoretical and practical framework this study uses the student as producer approach to learning in higher education, as adopted by the Lincoln International Business School, University of Lincoln, UK. Student as producer positions learners as skilled and capable agents, able to participate as partners with tutors in live research projects. To illuminate the nature of this approach to learning and to highlight its critical issues, the authors report on two guided student consultancy projects. These were set up with the assistance of two local organisations in the city of Lincoln UK. Using the student as producer model to deliver the projects enabled learners to acquire and develop a range of key skills and knowledge, not easily accessible in more traditional educational settings. This paper presents a systematic case study analysis of the eight organising principles of the student as producer model, as adopted by university tutors. The experience of tutors implementing student as producer suggests that the model can be widely applied to benefit not only the learning and teaching experiences of higher education students, and staff, but additionally, a university’s research programme and its community partners
