    Extrapolation Method for the No-Core Shell Model

    Nuclear many-body calculations are computationally demanding. An estimate of their accuracy is often hampered by the limited amount of computational resources even on present-day supercomputers. We provide an extrapolation method based on perturbation theory, so that the binding energy of a large basis-space calculation can be estimated without diagonalizing the Hamiltonian in this space. The extrapolation method is tested for 3H and 6Li nuclei. It will extend our computational abilities significantly and allow for reliable error estimates.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, PRC accepte

    Does the Isotropy of the CMB Imply a Homogeneous Universe? Some Generalised EGS Theorems

    We demonstrate that the high isotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), combined with the Copernican principle, is not sufficient to prove homogeneity of the universe -- in contrast to previous results on this subject. The crucial additional factor not included in earlier work is the acceleration of the fundamental observers. We find the complete class of irrotational perfect fluid spacetimes admitting an exactly isotropic radiation field for every fundamental observer and show that are FLRW if and only if the acceleration is zero. While inhomogeneous in general, these spacetimes all possess three-dimensional symmetry groups, from which it follows that they also admit a thermodynamic interpretation. In addition to perfect fluids models we also consider multi-component fluids containing non-interacting radiation, dust and a quintessential scalar field or cosmological constant in which the radiation is isotropic for the geodesic (dust) observers. It is shown that the non-acceleration of the fundamental observers forces these spacetimes to be FLRW. While it is plausible that fundamental observers (galaxies) in the real universe follow geodesics, it is strictly necessary to determine this from local observations for the cosmological principle to be more than an assumption.     Home accidents amongst elderly people: A locality study in Scotland

    Aim The aim of this locality study was to collect information on reported and unreported accidents amongst elderly people living in one locality in Scotland. Method Postal Survey- A postal questionnaire was sent to 3,757 men and women aged 65+ years living in one locality. The questionnaire asked respondents to indicate how many accidents they had experienced in the past twelve months, plus to indicate type and location. Information was gathered on living arrangements, ethnicity, gender, age and deprivation. Respondents were asked if they would be willing to take part in an interview study. Interview Study - One hundred elders who had had at least one accident in the previous twelve months were interviewed. Results Postal Survey - Over a third of the respondents in the postal survey reported having had an accident in the previous twelve months. Bumps and drops and falls were the most common type of accident. Most accidents happened in the kitchen. Women reported more falls than men and those living alone reported more accidents than those living with others. Age was associated with the prevalence of accidents, but the association was somewhat curvilinear, with accidents decreasing with age and then increasing again. Interview Study – Interviewees found it hard to differentiate one accident from another. Considerable reluctance to visit the GP after an accident was noted, with many not attending even for serious accidents. Almost forty percent were ‘very’ distressed after their accident, and a quarter reported a loss of confidence. However, most did not worry about accidents. Few thought that their age, health or medications were a cause of their accidents

    A New Recursion Relation for the 6j-Symbol

    The 6j-symbol is a fundamental object from the re-coupling theory of SU(2) representations. In the limit of large angular momenta, its asymptotics is known to be described by the geometry of a tetrahedron with quantized lengths. This article presents a new recursion formula for the square of the 6j-symbol. In the asymptotic regime, the new recursion is shown to characterize the closure of the relevant tetrahedron. Since the 6j-symbol is the basic building block of the Ponzano-Regge model for pure three-dimensional quantum gravity, we also discuss how to generalize the method to derive more general recursion relations on the full amplitudes.Comment: 10 pages, v2: title and introduction changed, paper re-structured; Annales Henri Poincare (2011

    Coupling of spacetime atoms and spin foam renormalisation from group field theory

    We study the issue of coupling among 4-simplices in the context of spin foam models obtained from a group field theory formalism. We construct a generalisation of the Barrett-Crane model in which an additional coupling between the normals to tetrahedra, as defined in different 4-simplices that share them, is present. This is realised through an extension of the usual field over the group manifold to a five argument one. We define a specific model in which this coupling is parametrised by an additional real parameter that allows to tune the degree of locality of the resulting model, interpolating between the usual Barrett-Crane model and a flat BF-type one. Moreover, we define a further extension of the group field theory formalism in which the coupling parameter enters as a new variable of the field, and the action presents derivative terms that lead to modified classical equations of motion. Finally, we discuss the issue of renormalisation of spin foam models, and how the new coupled model can be of help regarding this.Comment: RevTeX, 18 pages, no figure
