Coccidioides fungi are widely distributed in the American continents, with an expanding western range documented by a recently discovered cryptic population of Coccidioides immitis in Washington State. Linking early geospatial documents, one place at a time: annotation of geographic documents with Recogito
Recogito is an open source tool for the semi-automatic annotation of place references in maps and texts. It was developed as part of the Pelagios 3 research project, which aims to build up a comprehensive directory of places referred to in early maps and geographic writing predating the year 1492. Pelagios 3 focuses specifically on sources from the Classical Latin, Greek and Byzantine periods; on Mappae Mundi and narrative texts from the European Medieval period; on Late Medieval Portolans; and on maps and texts from the early Islamic and early Chinese traditions. Since the start of the project in September 2013, the team has harvested more than 120,000 toponyms, manually verifying almost 60,000 of them. Furthermore, the team held two public annotation workshops supported through the Open Humanities Awards 2014. In these workshops, a mixed audience of students and academics of different backgrounds used Recogito to add several thousand contributions on each workshop day.
A number of benefits arise out of this work: on the one hand, the digital identification of places – and the names used for them – makes the documents' contents amenable to information retrieval technology, i.e. documents become more easily search- and discoverable to users than through conventional metadata-based search alone. On the other hand, the documents are opened up to new forms of re-use. For example, it becomes possible to “map” and compare the narrative of texts, and the contents of maps with modern day tools like Web maps and GIS; or to analyze and contrast documents’ geographic properties, toponymy and spatial relationships. Seen in a wider context, we argue that initiatives such as ours contribute to the growing ecosystem of the “Graph of Humanities Data” that is gathering pace in the Digital Humanities (linking data about people, places, events, canonical references, etc.), which has the potential to open up new avenues for computational and quantitative research in a variety of fields including History, Geography, Archaeology, Classics, Genealogy and Modern Languages
A Combined Preconditioning Strategy for Nonsymmetric Systems
We present and analyze a class of nonsymmetric preconditioners within a
normal (weighted least-squares) matrix form for use in GMRES to solve
nonsymmetric matrix problems that typically arise in finite element
discretizations. An example of the additive Schwarz method applied to
nonsymmetric but definite matrices is presented for which the abstract
assumptions are verified. A variable preconditioner, combining the original
nonsymmetric one and a weighted least-squares version of it, is shown to be
convergent and provides a viable strategy for using nonsymmetric
preconditioners in practice. Numerical results are included to assess the
theory and the performance of the proposed preconditioners.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figure

Loss of survivin in intestinal epithelial progenitor cells leads to mitotic catastrophe and breakdown of gut immune homeostasis
A tightly regulated balance of proliferation and cell death of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) is essential for maintenance of gut homeostasis. Survivin is highly expressed during embryogenesis and in several cancer types, but little is known about its role in adult gut tissue. Here, we show that Survivin is specifically expressed in transit-amplifying cells and Lgr5(+) stem cells. Genetic loss of Survivin in IECs resulted in destruction of intestinal integrity, mucosal inflammation, and death of the animals. Survivin deletion was associated with decreased epithelial proliferation due to defective chromosomal segregation. Moreover, Survivin-deficient animals showed induced phosphorylation of p53 and H2AX and increased levels of cell-intrinsic apoptosis in IECs. Consequently, induced deletion of Survivin in Lgr5(+) stem cells led to cell death. In summary, Survivin is a key regulator of gut tissue integrity by regulating epithelial homeostasis in the stem cell niche

What do dynamical cluster masses really tell us about dynamics?
The diagnostic age versus mass-to-light ratio diagram is often used in
attempts to constrain the shape of the stellar initial mass function, and the
stability and the potential longevity of extragalactic young to
intermediate-age massive star clusters. Here, we explore the pitfalls
associated with this approach and its potential for use with Galactic open
clusters. We conclude that for an open cluster to survive for any significant
fraction of a Hubble time (in the absence of substantial external
perturbations), it is a necessary but not a sufficient condition to be located
close to the predicted photometric evolutionary sequences for "normal" simple

Timing and nature of AMOC recovery across Termination 2 and magnitude of deglacial CO2 change
Large amplitude variations in atmospheric CO 2 were associated with glacial terminations of the Late Pleistocene. Here we provide multiple lines of evidence suggesting that the B 20 p.p.m.v. overshoot in CO 2 at the end of Termination 2 (T2) B 129 ka was associated with an abrupt ( r 400 year) deepening of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). In contrast to Termination 1 (T1), which was interrupted by the Bølling-Allerød (B-A), AMOC recovery did not occur until the very end of T2, and was characterized by pronounced formation of deep waters in the NW Atlantic. Considering the variable influences of ocean circulation change on atmospheric CO 2 , we suggest that the net change in CO 2 across the last 2 terminations was approximately equal if the transient effects of deglacial oscillations in ocean circulation are taken into account
Exact two-particle eigenstates in partially reduced QED
We consider a reformulation of QED in which covariant Green functions are
used to solve for the electromagnetic field in terms of the fermion fields. It
is shown that exact few-fermion eigenstates of the resulting Hamiltonian can be
obtained in the canonical equal-time formalism for the case where there are no
free photons. These eigenstates lead to two- and three-body Dirac-like
equations with electromagnetic interactions. Perturbative and some numerical
solutions of the two-body equations are presented for positronium and
